Retrofit for the Future Lead: Wattbox Ltd
2 year monitoring project
Compare & Contrast energy saving building improvements
26 Highly Instrumented Homes across the UK
Data to be imported into central database EMBED.
Average of 30 different data points per property
Data captured every minute
26x30x(60x24) = 1,123,200 data points per day or nearly 820 million data records in two years
ChallengesData needed to be supplied to two locations: EMBED (AMEE) – for the EST Oswald Consultancy – for in depth analysis
A large amount of data (5 million data points per day), we were also going to be managing the entire fleet of Wattbox devices (over 100).Widely spaced locations (UK wide)Unreliable connectivity (mostly 3G)
1. Data is compressed on the Wattbox and transmitted across the internet in an encrypted format to the Tortrix cloud service.
2. The Tortrix Service receives the data, decrypts the transmission and uncompressed the data.
3. The Tortrix Cloud service processes the data and transforms it into the correct formats for both the EMBED Database and Oswald Consultancy’s analysis System, removing unnecessary data points.
4. The newly formatted data is transmitted to the EMBED database by the Tortrix Service.
5. The correctly formatted data is transmitted to the Oswald Consultancy analysis system by the Tortrix Service.
Solution
Use of Cloud Large Volume of data 5 million data points per day 3.6 billion data points in 2 years
High Availability
Elastic computing power High usage 1am – 4am Low usage 5am – 12pm
Windows Azure hosted Web service for Data Import from Wattbox.SQL Azure database for received data.Windows Azure based service for processing the data and sending to embed & Oswald Consultancy.Widows Azure hosted Web Site for configuration and management of Wattboxes.
Results The monitoring period has come to an end.
Currently only 37 properties in the database.
All 26 Wattbox based properties included (100%).
>70% of the data stored in embed came via our solution.
