This pie chart just represents that I have gave my questionnaire out to an equal amount of males and females, I have asked 5 males and 5 females. I have done this so that I can get an idea what the differences in that specific genders needs, requirements and expectations are so that I can apply them to my music video. Therefore after looking at all my results I should hopefully know exactly who my target market is and what I need to include in order to appeal to both genders. Throughout my research you will see in my results that I have used bar charts in order to show the results from both males and females and therefore I can see the similarities between both clearly.

Why I chose to ask equal amount of males as females…

Both males and females watch music videos as a form of entertainment therefore my music video should be controversial as this is how Mac DeMarcos videos are a form of entertainment and he is my stylistic influence. In addition when looking back at my post about how music videos become popular the content in my video should also be spontaneous and crazy and have an unconventional narrative as this is what makes a video entertaining and thus popular. Therefore I should have a non linear narrative to give a disjointed effect and the narrative could be proven unreliable as bits of the video are repeated and layered. Therefore in my planning stages I need to plan to have a non linear structured video and go against Todorov’s theory as this will definitely make my video unconventional as this is entertaining and also I need to plan for my video to include elements from Mac DeMarco’s videos.

These results tell me that both 4 males and 4 females enjoy unconventional music videos therefore this is what my video should be it should go against all indie rock conventions and instead follow Mac DeMarcos conventions as he goes against the indie conventions. For example indie rock music videos are usually quite casual and laid back and include shots of artists using instruments and playing at one of their gigs to show the audience what genre of music they're singing however my video should be abstract and not laid back and thus not having scenes like these in order to attract an audience as my target market enjoy unconventional music videos.

I have asked this question due to me wanting to find out about my target market. This tells me that my target market enjoy the bands The 1975 predominantly as both male and females said this is their favourite band from this genre. These results also tell me that the genre indie rock is a very popular genre as both males and females enjoy various different bands from this genre therefore my target market are both males and females who listen to indie rock bands. The fact that my target market enjoy Mac DeMarco and Kodaline means that I already have a ready made target market as they’re already familiar with their conventions and thus will enjoy my music video as I am using Mac DeMarcos conventions, meaning I am confident to make a video following the style of Mac DeMarco as I already know it will appeal to a market. This is the ‘pros’ of making a music video which has a post modernist approach.

These results tell me that both male and females enjoy these certain indie rocks bands from the previous slide due to these reasons therefore this is what my music video should be. Therefore during the planning stage I need to plan to make sure that my video is dysfunctional and unique. I can do this by having a storyline which encodes meaning in a way that isn't confusing to watch. These results also tell me that my target market are people who are more mature music fans and they enjoy making their own interpretations on videos I know this because one of the answers by both male and females is that they enjoy the creativity in the music video with telling a story therefore I should do this in my own music video but as I am being creative I should encode meaning and make my video have multiple interpretations and it will be creative therefore appealing to my target market.

These results are what fans from indie rock music videos (my target market) expect to see from a video of this genre. However as my target market enjoy unconventional music videos as I have previously found out I am going to go against these expectations. I feel that by going against these conventions this is what will make my music video stand out and be unique and although these results tell me that the audience expect the videos to be unique and original I am going to do so anyway due to following DeMarcos style.

These are all conventions from different genres the fact that my target market have an understanding that these are what not to expect from an indie rock video tells me that they’re experienced enough with music videos therefore they will be able to understand my music video and why I have included what I have and hopefully they will understand the meaning due to being mature music fans.

I have asked this question to get an idea into my target markets interests and hobbies so I know exactly who I am targeting. Obviously I cant include all of these aspects into my music video otherwise the main message I want to portray would be hard to understand. One of the interests of both male and female is partying therefore in my music video in order to attract both genders I should have a scene where the audience understand that the artist is at a party in order to grab the audiences attention. In addition a interest and hobby by both males and females is art therefore I should make my music video in a way that comes across as creative and unique so that it will be viewed as not just a regular video but an art form therefore I should have many different camera techniques so that the video is creative.

I have asked this question due to many indie rock music artists having a particular style that they get style inspiration from so I wanted to know if my artist in my music video should wear any particular clothes in order to attract my target market but as it appears both males and females said no I am going to just put my artist in clothes which fit with the narrative like Mac DeMarco does. For example crazy outfits and casual clothes.

These results tell me that what people expect indie rock music artists to wear actually fits Mac DeMarcos style as he wears casual clothes and trainers in his music videos he is known for having that look so therefore this is how the artist in my video shall dress predominantly and also dress to fit the narrative. For example my video is going to have a psychedelic feel to it therefore the clothes my artist should wear should fit this thus my artist in the video having their own individual style.

This is question I really needed answers to due to Mac DeMarcos videos being very controversial so I had to makes sure that my target market enjoy controversial music videos therefore my music video shall definitely include a controversial subject due to 4 males and 5 females enjoying music videos that include a controversial subject.

These results tell me why both males and females enjoy music videos that include a controversial subject the one which both males and females said was that it makes the video more memorable thus making it popular. Therefore the controversial content of my music video should be portrayed in a dysfunctional creative way to make the music video memorable. I know that by doing so it will make my video memorable as this is how Mac DeMarco makes his music videos memorable.

This result gives me the main content to go with my music video. The most popular controversial subject that both males and females enjoy to see the most is drugs. Therefore this will be what my music video focuses on. As the song I am using is called Lose Your Mind and it is about being submerged in something else, I feel that this will fit with the subject of drugs as I can encode information to show that the artist in the video is losing his mind due to drug use. In addition drugs have connotations of being in a psychedelic state which is associated with the 60’s era therefore my music video can have a retro feel to it.

As I have just said previously my video will focus on drug use in order to attract my target market it will also have a vintage feel to it as the 60’s era is associated to drug use. Due to both males and females saying that it depends on the song I feel that they will understand why my music video has a retro feel to it due to the content of the song and video therefore my indie rock music video will have a retro vibe.

As I have mentioned previously my results have aided me to come to the conclusion that my music video shall have a retro vibe. In order to do so these are the things that my music video should have as these are the things about the retro style that they like. Both males and females like the patterns, tie-dye, old retro style video and bright colours so I need to plan my video in a way that incorporates all of these things.

As expected the most popular way in which both males and females view music videos is via YouTube. This is an easy, quick and free way to view music videos so this tells me that my target market are young people who don’t really have an income coming in to pay to watch music videos therefore YouTube is the way in which my target market shall be viewing my music video in order to be most popular.

Firstly both males and females say that they find out about music videos via magazines this is convenient due to one of my ancillary tasks to make a magazine advert for the video. Secondly Both males and females find out about new music videos by suggestions from other people and YouTube therefore I should do everything I can to attract my audience (everything I have found out in my results) and also incorporating Mac DeMarcos style therefore my video will become popular and if the video is popular on YouTube it shall be put in peoples suggestions thus the video being even more popular and successful.

Overall all of this information has helped me come to

different conclusions about my target market and my music video. I now know how to attract my audience which is important as a music video or any product is never going to be successful unless it attracts an audience, everything I do is done to attract an audience. Therefore when it comes to planning my music video I can make a check list of everything on this PowerPoint that I have said I am going to include therefore I know I am definitely going to attract my audience.

I should now do a post outlining fully who my target market is and then I can get a head start on planning my video as I know now who I am targeting.
