The Excretory System
Responsible for waste removal and excre%on
Liver & Kidneys: The Kidneys
• The main excretory system organ (Filtra%on)
The Liver:
• Converts toxic ammonia to less harmful urea, which is released into our bloodstream for filtra:on by our kidneys
2 NH3 (aq) + 1 CO2 (g) 1 (NH2)2CO (aq) + 1 H2O (l) (2 molecules of ammonia + 1 molecule of carbon dioxide produces 1 molecule of urea and 1 molecule of water)
The Kidney:
• Every drop of your blood is filtered 300 :mes per day
• You produce about 1.5 L of urine per day
The Kidney:
Renal Arteries • Carry unfiltered, oxygenated blood to the kidneys
• Branch into smaller and smaller blood vessels down to capillaries that supply blood to the nephrons
Renal Veins • Carry filtered, deoxygenated blood away from the kidneys
The Kidney:
Nephrons • Remove waste from the blood • Produce urine • Microscopic • Found in the Medulla • We have millions of them
Other Parts: Ureters • Long tubes from kidneys to bladder • Carry urine out of kidneys Bladder • Sac covered in muscle :ssue • Holds urine
Urethra • Tube that carries urine out of our body
Our Skin:
Sweat Glands • We have thousands of them • Help cool our body when we exercise • Help remove excess salt (uric acid) from our body
Dialysis: • The filtra:on of blood through a
semipermeable membrane
• Removes waste components from the blood using diffusion
• Necessary if someone has kidney damage or malfunc:on
• Life saving technology
