Thank you goes to The Jane Goodall Institute-Ape Fund for supporting Corsair's greening initiatives and visual arts program. Thank you also goes to all students, staff and parents who voted. We will be receiving a grant of $500 to paint one picnic table. This will give the students and teachers a place to sit and learn at while learning outside. The art on the table will be a mix of native plants from our garden and the hopes and wishes for the environment by the students. The table will be placed under the large tree near The Roots Garden.

If you can help in anyway to prep and/or assemble the table please contact Ms. Rodrigues. Thank you.

MEMORY PORTRAITS “What is a portrait?” is a question the grade 4 and 5 students reflected on as they learned about the artist Jean-Michel Basquiat, and created their portrait. Each student chose a memory and reflected on it, including the colours, shapes, and textures in it. They then considered what materials would best represent their memory, including if it would be best represented as 2D or 3D, and they gave their piece a title. As they went through the creative process, they developed important problem solving skills and reflected on a moment in their life. They also used many recyclable materials including cardboard, wine corks, wallpaper books, wool, cd's, etc...Very few new materials were purchased for this project. Please take the time to speak with your child about this project. A lot of emotions were brought up and in doing so this project was very therapeutic for some students. Have your child look around your home and see what they can use to build and create with, instead of purchasing new materials.

THANK YOU! Mme. Weir's and Mme Wessinger's classes thank The Apple Market for donating fresh fruit and fresh vegetables for two weeks in March. Please consider

adding one fresh fruit and one fresh vegetable to your child's lunch daily and talk with them about the importance of eating this food group daily.

REDUCING WASTE AT CORSAIR

In January Boomerang Lunches were introduced. You might have seen wrappers, left over food and other garbage type items in your child's lunch bag as they brought them home to be recycled and composted.

Over March and April all students have been taking part in a Wasteless Lunch Campaign. The objective of this campaign is/was to encourage students to use reusable containers instead of packaged items including juice containers and individual wrapped items. The Green Team is encouraging all students and staff to think and act upon the waste in their lunch bag - what can be composted and what reusable containers can be used. Anything that can be composted is to be taken home.

The Green Team Teachers would like to thank all students, staff and parents for taking part in this initiative and encourage all to reduce our waste at Corsair and at home.

ART IN THE COMMUNITY Ms. Misener's class and Ms. Grieco's homeroom class took part in a workshop at the Art Gallery of Mississauga in March. All funding was provided by the art gallery and Corsair students greatly appreciate all the funding that we receive from the gallery.

Ontario Focused Intervention Partnership (OFIP) Tutoring—French and Math!

Students are excited about learning Math through games and fun activities! The Math OFIP program will end on May 3rd.

GRADE 4 SCIENTIST IN THE CLASSROOM We learnt about pulleys and gears and the difference between compound and removal and fixed pulleys! Students also built their own pulley that was a water well with rope and paper clips and string.

Corsair Vikings Basketball

The Corsair co-ed team competed in two tournaments. In one tournament they came just short of making the semi-finals and finished 5th out of 12 teams.

The girls and boys teams competed in a very tough tournament and learned a lot from the grade 4-6 students they played against. The girls came in 3rd place and the boys came in 4th. Mme Raso and Mme Coelho-Freeman really enjoyed coaching the students and are very proud of how well they played and represented Corsair.

Caribou Math contest

(grades 3, 4 and 5)

The next contest will be taking place Wednesday April 4th & Thursday April 5th, 2018. The next interactive question will be Floodfill which your students can practice now on our games page.

On the practice page you can select the number of colors, whereas in the contest it is part of the problem to find out the number of colors that are needed. This is not a problem because in each step one should try to reuse colors that are already used. If at the end too many colors are used the program will tell and one can change colors or try again from scratch.

There will be no history question in this contest.

WORLD WATER DAY

March 22nd was World Water Day.

All students and staff took part in the Great Gulp on March 22nd. Students were encouraged to bring in a refillable water bottle filled with water on the 22nd. At the end of morning announcements, the entire school took a big gulp of water together. The objective was to get everyone thinking about their consumption of daily water, protecting the quality of our water, drinking more tap water rather than store bottled water and reducing our waste which leaches into our water supply. Please think about supplying your child with a refillable bottle filled with tap water everyday.

Great job Corsair! And thank you Ms. Caldwell and Boomerang Lunch students for creating such beautiful posters and inspiring announcements.

CARNAVAL DE CORSAIR 2018

On Tuesday March 27, students participated in our “Carnaval”. Even though the weather did not cooperate with us to have outdoor activities, students thoroughly enjoyed fun activities throughout the school! Some of the stations included “Curling”,

“Limbo”, “Pin the Smile on the Snowman”, “Scooter Relay” and “Spoons” (playing music with spoons). And of course, students LOVED drinking hot chocolate!

Thank you to the organizing committee—Mme Raso, Mme Lemieux, M. Doucet, Mme Claire, Mlle Grieco, Mme Horne, Mlle Weir and Mlle Puzzuoli!

Celebrate Administrative Professionals’ Day Wednesday, April 25, 2018 Peel schools will pay tribute to administrative professionals on Administrative Professionals’ Day on April 25, 2018. The day will be celebrated with special activities and events that provide teachers, students and parents an opportunity to thank the administrative staff who help support student success each and every day. The Peel board appreciates the important job administrative staff do each school day and April 25 provides an opportunity to give these individuals the recognition they deserve. Let’s celebrate the contributions of Mrs. Hastie, Mrs. Haskell and Mrs. Henderson—how about a note, a card or some kind words?

CORSAIR PS GOES PINK ON APRIL 11

On Wednesday April 11, 2018, Peel District School Board schools will recognize Day of Pink. Unlike Pink Shirt Day, which is meant to combat all forms of bullying, we celebrate Day of Pink in Peel to specifically combat homophobia and transphobia. “Equity and inclusion is something that all Peel schools teach throughout the year and discuss with students daily—it is embedded in everything we do,” says Peter Joshua, director of education. “Day of Pink is just one more way for us to ensure students and staff learn, work and develop in environments that are safe, equitable, inclusive, respectful and nurturing for all.” Day of Pink began when a high school student in Cambridge, Nova Scotia, was bullied with homophobic language because he wore a pink shirt to school. The next day, hundreds of students at his school stood up to bullying and wore pink to school to show their support for equity and inclusion.

Important changes coming to SafeArrival system in May 2018 The Peel District School Board is currently using the SafeArrival system by Synervoice Technologies. As Synervoice has been sold to West Communications, there will be slight changes to our SafeArrival system and how you will report your child’s absence from school. The phone number to report your child’s absence will stay the same, but there are a few other changes. Beginning May 14, 2018, all elementary school parents/guardians need to report their child’s full-day absences, late arrivals and/or early departures from school via our new School Messenger SafeArrival system.

The phone number will stay the same: 1-855-209-6155

Website has changed to: go.schoolmessenger.ca

Download a new app: School Messenger App (from Google or Apple) (please be sure to delete the old Safe Arrival app after May 11)

Please continue to use our current Synervoice system until Friday, May 11, 2018. The new School Messenger SafeArrival will be live on Monday, May 14, 2018. Important to note: The transition to a new company and system will require parents to set up a new account with School Messenger SafeArrival as data will not be transferred from the old system to the new. More information on how and when to set-up your new account will be coming in the next month.

ParentConnect

Online parent portal to access important student information
