My Response (respectively to the points in last section):

1. It is totally an individual view whether I am fit or unfit to be a teacher. People far more qualified than you or I

thought I am fit for teaching. So let’s not discuss that. EGOISTIC: Well, a bit of healthy ego is required to retain

one’s identity. HUMAN/ROBOT LIKE: Engineering discipline is essential pre requisite for chemical engineers.

Probably you mistook my discipline as robot like behavior.

2. LITTLE KNOWLEDGE: Please look in feedback 4. Your own batch mate testifies (under faculty’s effective practices

section) me to have ‘excellent command in subject’. Probably there is difference in grasping power which make

you feel that I have very little knowledge of subject. SHOW OFF: Dear student, I know what I know and what I do

not know. I do not try to show off. That is my policy in all aspects of my life. I think you miss understood my

passion with which I teach, as something show off like attitude. CORRECTING MISTAKES: I was handling a very

core subject for the first time. Corrections and clarifications are bound to happen. It is not related with noise

making by class. Though noise making by class also sometimes disturbs the flow of teacher. STRICT TEACHER:

May be you were telling that I tries to be strict so that students don’t ask doubts, but feedback takes only some

limited number of words. Mother also don’t give milk until child cries. Same thing applies here. Until you come

up with a doubt how can one know you have a doubt. As far as I remember, I never scolded any one for asking

doubts. I always encouraged doubts and if no one asked doubts, I myself raised some doubts in the class. If I

know answer I would tell, if I don’t know answer I would find out one. So no point in not allowing students to ask

doubts.

Advice to you is to focus more on studies rather than imagining things and making a story out of it. If you don’t

like someone all works of that one seem negative and vice versa. Don’t mix work with personal relations.

My response:

First of all, you addressing your teacher with his name itself shows how sincere and virtuous a student you are and what

is the place of a teacher near you. No one can teach anything to anyone unless one has compassion towards those

whom one is teaching. And this is the respect/gratitude you show to your teacher.

UNPROFESSIONAL:

On an institution such as ours, of course, one expects professionalism from all the stake holders of institution. But when

the whole environment around is full of unprofessionalism one cannot expect any particular individual to retain his/her

Page 4: Response to Feedback

professionalism for long. Just try to think, do the following things which happen in our institution stand up to the stature

of our institution or do they represent professionalism.

Students do talking, laughing, watching videos, chatting on apps. , mimicking teacher, making vulgar gestures

behind the teacher etc. in the class. Even 8 pointers are not excluded from this.

Students make mockery of system by writing negative comments in that section of feedback where they are

asked to mention strengths of the course. For example, a person writes in CRE Lab feedback in ‘strengths of this

course section’ that this course has helped them to become experts at manipulation of data. Such behavior from

students is unwarranted.

On the roads inside the campus, students talk filthy language, verbally openly abuse their faculty, get into

immoral, indecent and even intimate things in front of faculty, kids, general public etc.

The student president of NIT W is alleged to have siphoned off lakhs of funds during technozion, spring spree

etc. being a student in NIT W..!! ?

Coming to our staff, lab assistants come drunk to the lab and interfere with smooth functioning of experiments.

Staff of rank store assistants, shout and verbally abuse faculty (both adhoc & regular).

Neither the hod nor the registrar come to rescue of such victim faculty instead ask them to adjust.

People get salaries on 12th, 13th or so of the month.

These are just the tip of the iceberg. I am sure the student who has this complaint that I am not dealing with

students professionally, if in my place, would not have lived up to what he/she is demanding from me. Besides,

the matter of being professional is very subjective. What is professional in one’s view might not be the same in

other’s view.

STUDENTS BEING INFERIOR:

Dear student, I presented the fact that the position of a teacher is superior to that of a student, and not that as an

individual I am superior to all of the students. I am surprised you took it that way. Probably you look at faculty from a

view point of western culture. But here in our country we consider teaching as a sacred profession and have lot of

empathetic attachment towards students which is not found in some cultures. Being attached, sometimes a teacher may

become over possessive towards students. You generally don’t scold some x, y, z person. You do so to those whom you

consider your own. Professionalism is not being unattached. Things don’t work that way. Now you are in final year, hope

you will know this soon as you enter in to practical life.

NOT STUDENT FRIENDLY:

I really want to differ from this comment that I am not student friendly. Several among you found themselves

comfortable coming to my place, discussing doubts, getting advice on careers, and other general matters. Some did

hangout with me for hours. If it was that I am not student friendly, how could this have been possible? It might be that

your expectation of a friend is different than what is to most people. But for that you cannot blame the other person.

QUARRELSOME:

I guess you have misunderstood my pro activeness and my intention to be ‘as clear as possible’ as quarrelsome

behavior.

You need to make this point clear that there cannot be a quarrel as such between student and a teacher. It means you

are bringing your teacher at equal level as you. Again we need to go to previous point that I think position of a teacher is

superior to that of a student. If you don’t think so then it means you have never accepted the laws of nature. One day I

hope you will at least accept it within yourself, if not express it.

RIGID BELIEVER IN RULES:

I also believe in a rule that “there is no hard and fast rule anywhere in the world”. All rules are provisional. Had you

taken a closer account of my approach, you would not have had this complaint against me.

FAILS TO ADEQUATELY ACCOMODATE STUDENT INTERESTS:

Once you show interest we are here to help. If students themselves are interested in just the attendance and one day

before exam reading, no one on earth can induce interest in them but themselves.

That said, sometimes I myself did not find comfortable with subject as I was handling it for the first time. In those few

classes I agree I might have failed to keep students involved. Still, I got feedback that from students that they were able

to follow well and I was doing a good job in teaching.

Only last sentence of your comment has constructive feedback that being student friendly can prove to be more

productive. I am definitely trying to improve my already student friendly approach. Thank you.

My response:

First section point 2: If you draw using software directly, you will not notice and learn the intricacies.

Third section point 2:

SHAMELESSLY CAME TO TEACH:

If a student calls a teacher shameless and that too because he came to teach, to obey his employer/Boss/Superior, to

perform his duty…, then will that student remain qualified to be called as a student in first place. He/she is expected to

accept what HOD has finally decided after listening to both the parties (students and teacher). This comment shows that

this student has complete disregard towards teachers, seniors, HOD, educational system itself. It is like the student

wants everything to be going on in his/her own way as he/she likes. This is a very harmful attitude. More harmful to

yourself than to others. Comment of such a person is not valid at all. Also this is not a constructive feedback, which is

what is asked here.

SAYING THAT I KNOW WHO ALL HAVE GIVEN BAD COMMENTS….:

There was one negative comment against my name in CRE Lab feedback that I discriminate people based on from which

place they belong to. There was only one such incident which could have misunderstood. I tried to remove the

misunderstanding by narrating the incident and anonymously referring to the student involved. I said even though I am

aware of that student, I will not take name of that student in class (which is what is called integrity). But negatively

tuned minds can think of negatives only and try to find negatives in each and every thing. Ask anyone in the class, they

will tell you how impartial I am in all matters, particularly when it comes to evaluation.

Page 7: Response to Feedback

READING NEWSPAPER IN LAB:

I did not read newspaper in lab INSTEAD of helping students with work. In 18 lab classes which have been taken for both

the sections, only in 3 or 4 classes I remember about reading newspaper to keep my mind engaged when no one was

asking any doubt. Making false allegations against someone has serious repercussions in life. That is law of nature.

Please refrain yourself from such things. My best wishes are still with you. As a Teacher I will always care for my

students no matter what I get in return.

My response:

Response to second comment in second section: Last three exercises were about drawing a detail drawing of a flange, a

PFD & P&ID, and drawing dimensioned drawing of a distillation column. One previous exercise was about drawing a tori

spherical head. The dimensions in tori spherical head drawing were taken from a problem itself. You don’t get a tori

spherical shape with just any dimensions. As a chemical engineer the course has been dealt quite comprehensively in

the available time as far as drawing is concerned. In fact some students felt that they were being taught more than

sufficient things.
