  • Types of FundingGrant, Scholarship, FellowshipAwarded based upon criteria, which usually reflect the values and purposes of the donor or founder of the fund. Money does not have to be repaid.Funders: Government; local authorities; philanthropic and gaming trusts; service and social enterprise organisations.

  • Who can apply?Anyone can apply for funding.Apply to different funds according to criteria that is relevant to you.Most opportunities are for New Zealanders wanting study in New Zealand.Does include some opportunities for New Zealanders wanting to travel and/or study overseas.

  • ExamplesMaxine Scholarship: offers financial assistance to talented young Aucklanders between aged 15-20 for a course of study and/or materials in the areas of education, the arts, dance and drama, music, fashion and sport. AMP Regional Scholarship: rewards those with the courage, passion, determination and commitment to achieve their chosen goal no matter what obstacles lie in their path.

    Check BreakOut regularly (as least every two weeks) as information is added and updated daily. On average 10 new funds are added each week.

    BreakOut does not hold resourcing information for groups. Try FundView to find funding for community activities.

Scholarship: an award of financial aid for a student to further their education. Fellowship: A merit-based scholarship, or form of academic financial aid.

    Other fund types you might see include Fund, Award, Bursary, Residency, Programme, Prize.

    Awarded based on criteria which usually reflect the values and purposes of the donor or founder of the fund.

    Search 1. Criteria SearchChoose one of the following categories:Secondary school study (supporting secondary school study)Tertiary study (support study activity polytechnic, university or private training establishment, including both taught study and research). Professional/personal development (for travel, sport, arts, professional development and dire financial need).

    Identify the purpose of funding.Tick any relevant criteria to narrow down the search:ethnic group/nationality disability male/female pupil or ex-pupil of a certain school area or region.

    Tick to include national funders in your search to get a broader list.     Funds identified as new are those added to BreakOut within the last 3 months. The fund itself may not be new.

    Note: the Calendar Search does not list the schemes that are always open for applications.

    Search 3. Keyword SearchSearch for funds you know the name of. It searches the fund title only (not the content).

    Search 4. Alphabetical ListingLists all resourcing opportunities according to the name of the fund, not the name of the funder.
