An Industrial Revolution Is Born

Paragraph 1After the Civil War, the United States quickly

expanded. Advances in transportation, like the transcontinental railroad, linked natural resources, products, and markets. The United States changed from a largely agricultural (farming) society into a powerful industrial (manufacturing) nation. The rise of big business and the growth of industry began to impact where Americans lived and how they made their livings. Towns and big cities built up across the nation, giving the new factory workers places to live and work.

_______________, _______________, and _______________.

• The U.S. changed from a _____________ society to an ______________ nation.

Paragraph 2Railroads moved natural resources,

including copper and lead, to factories in the East. Iron ore deposits were moved to sites of steel mills in cities such as Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Eastern factories processed the natural resources into finished products. The finished products were then transported to national markets to be sold across the country.

Paragraph 3Before railroads began to crisscross the country,

small businessmen could only afford to transport and sell their products to local markets. The growth of railroads, however, made it possible for businesses to sell and ship their products to markets all across the nation. National markets quickly turned small businesses into big businesses. Some of the first big businesses in America were in the fields of oil production, steel manufacturing, and railroad building.

near centers of population. Advancements in technology caused the number of factories to increase. New communities sprang up around the new factories. More and more Americans left the rural farmlands to look for work in urban areas (cities). Immigrants also poured into manufacturing areas from other countries, hoping to find a better life. Cities grew from these communities, providing the factory workers with places to live.

Paragraph 5Factories made finished products such as textiles,

automobiles, and steel to meet the growing demands of people across America. The textile industry was located in New England. Detroit, Michigan, was home to the auto industry. Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, was the center of the steel industry. Chicago, Illinois, grew because of the meatpacking industry.

Paragraph 6

As the national markets grew, powerful men called captains of industry began to appear and impact the rise of big business. These men built and became the leaders of successful business empires. Some of these captains of industry included John D. Rockefeller, who controlled much of the nation’s oil industry; Andrew Carnegie, who built the largest steel business in the United States; Henry Ford, who headed the auto industry; and Cornelius Vanderbilt , a leader in the railroad industry.
