Resources
Ch. 25
E/E Mr. Batts
Renewable Resources
Can be used indefinitely without being used up.
Examples: Trees (lumber), wind energy, fresh water, solar energy, crops, chickens
Sustainable yield
Not using resources more than they can be replaced.
Ex. Not overfishing, planting trees once they are logged
Nonrenewable Resources
Resource that exists in a fixed amount They can’t be replaced naturally for
millions of years (unless recycled)
Examples: diamonds, fossil fuels (oil, coal), silver, metals
*A countries’ wealth depends on the location and extraction of resources
coal
US imports 12 million barrels of oil per day
Top Oil Producers Top Oil Consumers
Saudi Arabia US Russia China US Japan Iran India
The US has 6% of the people in the world, but we use 30% of the Earth’s resources.
We waste too much.
Companies that don’t import middle eastern oil
Hess Citgo BP Conoco
Companies that import oil from the Middle East
Shell Texaco Exxon/Mobil Amoco
Minerals and uses
Clay-bricks, china, tiles, pottery Gypsum-plaster Talc-cosmetics Lead-batteries and shields for xrays Limestone-cement Silver-photography, jewelry, electronics Titanium-jet engines, whitener in foods Zinc-pennies, steel
Air Resources
Sources of Air pollution: Power plants Automobiles (90% of CO)
Causes asthma, lung cancers
Pollutants from coal burning plants in the midwest can travel in air to Adirondack mtns in NY. (carried downwind)
Indoor Air Pollution
Asbestos-from insulation, lung cancer Formaldehyde-from furniture; irritates
eyes and lungs, dizziness Radon222- from soil and water; lung
cancer Carbon Monoxide-from faulty furnaces,
wood stoves; headaches, irreg heartbeat
Water
~71% of E’s surface is ocean Oceans have 97% of all the water on E Of 3% left (freshwater), 2/3 of that is
frozen in glaciers
Most animals and plants are 50-70% water
Questions
1. Know renewable vs. nonrenewable.
2. What are the main sources for air pollution?
