ABOUT THE INSTITUTION

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

Coimbatore Institute of Technology (CIT), started

in 1956 by Sri. V. Rangasamy Naidu is reckoned for its

academic and research excellence in engineering and

technology. CIT is a Government Aided Autonomous

Institution affiliated to Anna University, Chennai. The

institute has a reputation with service of competent

well qualified faculty members and dynamic

management to set highest standards in engineering

research and development. CIT offers undergraduate,

post graduate and PhD programmes with curriculum of

global standards, promoting the students to compete

internationally. All the courses are accredited by NBA.

The institute has celebrated its Golden Jubilee in the

year 2006 and has collaborations with leading frontier

universities and industries in India and abroad for

promotion of innovative engineering ideas. CIT has a

laurel foliage on the head as an emblem of victory.

Recently, CIT was awarded with the “Bizz-2012” the

world business leader award and “ABB News National

B-School awards” 2013 for Outstanding Engineering

Institution in South India.

One of the founding departments of Coimbatore

Institute of Technology (CIT), the Mechanical

Engineering Department has played a leading role in

evolving an 'Engineering Science' based curriculum.

Today, the department of mechanical engineering of

CIT attracts and features an extraordinary rich

diversity and quantity of talented individuals, with

nearly 500 undergraduates which includes full time

and part time, 60 graduate students and over 40 faculty

members. The department served as a role model for

many academic institutes in and around Coimbatore,

Tamil Nadu. Apart from teaching undergraduate and

post graduate students, the faculty of Mechanical

Engineering actively pursue research through

graduate students and research scholars. Over the

years, interaction with industry and the emphasis on

applied engineering has increased. Continued

research and development have led to better

machines and processes helping the mankind.

The Mechanical Engineering Department of CIT

has been a pioneer in establishing Welding Research

Cell for dedicated research in the field of Welding. To

its credit it has produced about 28 PhDs over the

period and still a lot of researchers are carrying out

their PhD work here. It also serves as the IWS

Coimbatore Centre Office right from its inception.

Indian Welding Society is a premier professional

body, devoted to the cause of welding in the country.

The society is committed for promoting advancement

in welding, cutting and surfacing related technologies

and in providing a forum for professional exchange of

information, experience and developments in the field.

With its headquarters at New Delhi, the capital city of

India, the society has a federal structure consisting of

15 centres in the North, East, West, South and Central

Zones of India. Since its inception, IWS is pursuing the

knowledge dissemination goal on a continual basis. It

is organising national / international workshops,

seminars, training programmes, lectures, technical

talks, etc. through its centres, zones and headquarters

throughout the year.

Welding is one of the oldest materials processing

technologies, but still an ever green technology, which

has evolved day by day. The modern industrial

scenario has proven that welding is inevitable to

produce any product. Starting from space crafts,

automobiles, mobile phones and even a small pen

drive uses any one of the welding or its allied

processes. The main objective of the course is to

provide basic knowledge about various fusion and
