recommended for installation of all TOLI products.

LIMITATIONSLightweight concrete, less than 115 lb/ft3

(1849 kg/m3), may have such low strength thatit is unsuitable for covering with resilient floor-ing unless 1" (25.4 mm) of standard weightconcrete, generally 140 lb/ft3 (2251 kg/m3), isused as a topping. In addition, floors contain-ing lightweight aggregate or excess water, and those that are allowed to dry from onlyone side, such as concrete on metal deckconstruction, may need a much longer dryingtime. See ASTM F710 for more information.

Exceptionally porous, soft or dusty concretesurfaces may have such a low strength thatthey are unsuitable for installation of resilientfloor coverings. It may be necessary tomechanically remove the top layer of concretein such cases, and these surfaces may need tobe primed and/or covered with a latex patch-ing or underlayment compound. In such cases, consult with a manufacturer of patching orunderlayment compounds or someone with anexpertise in solving concrete problems.

This underlayment compound must be mois-ture, mildew and alkali resistant, and it mustprovide a minimum compressive strength of3500 psi (24,115 kPa).

Expansion joints, isolation joints or other mov-ing joints in concrete must not be filled withpatching compound or covered with resilientflooring. An expansion joint covering systemmust be used.

5. Installation

PREPARATORY WORKDeliver all materials to the jobsite in manufac-turer’s original, unopened, undamaged con-

tainers with identification labels intact at least48 hours before installation so that materialscan acclimate to jobsite temperature, whichmust be 65 - 80 degrees F (18 - 27 degrees C),and humidity.

Store cartons of tile or plank products flatand squarely on top of one another. Do notlay cartons on their edge. Protect flooringproducts, adhesives and maintenance prod-ucts from temperature extremes.

Do not begin flooring installation until allother finishing operations, especially over-head trades, have been completed. Duringspackling and/or painting, the substrateshould be covered to prevent contaminationor staining, which can cause adhesion failureor product discoloration.

For a 48 hour period before, during andafter installation, the space to receive flooringand the subfloor must be maintained at 65 -80 degrees F (18 - 27 degrees C). Thereafter,

the minimum temperature must be 55degrees F (13 degrees C).

All substrates must be dry, clean, smooth, and structurally sound. The substrate must befree of dust, solvent, paint, wax, oil, grease, residual adhesive or adhesive removers, curing, sealing, hardening, or parting compounds, alka-line salts, excessive carbonation or laitance, mold, mildew and other foreign materials thatmight prevent adhesive bond, per ASTM F710.

Concrete TestingNew concrete slabs must be cured and driedbefore installation of resilient flooring. Dryingtimes will vary depending on atmosphericconditions and mix design.

Moisture and pH testing must be per-formed on all concrete slabs regardless ofage or grade level. Conduct test accordingto ASTM F1869 (Calcium Chloride Test).Moisture emission must not exceed 5 lb/1000ft2/24 hours before, and pH must not exceed 9before, during or after installation of a TOLIfloor. The pH must be less than 9.

Wood SubstratesWood floors must be double layer construction, minimum 1" (25.4 mm) total thickness with atleast 18" (457 mm) of well-ventilated airspacebeneath. Crawl spaces must be insulated andprotected by a vapor barrier.

Do not install over “sleeper” floors or ply-wood floors that have been installed directlyover a concrete slab.

The top layer must be free of any knots orother voids in the surface. Unacceptable sur-faces include, but are not limited to, luan, ply-wood with knots, underlayment made of pineor other soft woods, particleboard, Masoniteªor other hardboard underlayment, hardwoodflooring, textured or cushioned flooring orother uneven or unstable substrates.

Unacceptable surfaces must be coveredusing a 1/4" (6.4 mm) or thicker panel under-layment that is designed for the use intended.Obtain manufacturer’s warranty and writteninstructions for spacing, nailing and seamtreatment for underlayment panels.

METHODSConsult TOLI’s current Installation Guide forcomplete installation information.

TOLI tile and plank imitate natural materialsand contain shading variations that are notconsidered manufacturing defects.

When using more than one carton, ensurethat the cartons are all the same dye lot. Ifmore than one dye lot will be used in the

same room, compare the tiles to see if acolor, texture or gloss variation is present.

When installing multiple dye lots, “shuffle” thetiles to mix the dye lots, creating a randomlook, or use the different lots in other areas.

Many TOLI tile products are directional andcan be laid out either in the same direction, orquarter turned. To assist the installer, most TOLItiles have arrows on the back. The specifiershould make the final decision about tiledirection. It is recommended that one “drylay” a section of flooring to ensure that thedesired look has been achieved.

TOLI tiles are often specified in patterns withTOLI Divider Strips and custom patterns andlogos. TOLI tile can be either precut by waterjetor ultrasonic knife and delivered to the installerready to install, or they can be cut on the job-site by the contractor. To have a custom designprecut, contact a local TOLI distributor.

Select the correct adhesive. For floors subjectto heavy loads, use TOLI #900 epoxy. For mostother installations, use TOLI #5050 adhesive.

TOLI sheet vinyl should be installed using theTOLI Trowel, a fine-notch 1/16" × 1/32" × 1/32"(1.6 × 0.8 × 0.8 mm) professional trowel.

PRECAUTIONSEnsure that the building’s heating and air condi-tioning system is operating for at least 1 weekprior to floor installation. Use of portable heatersis prohibited. Kerosene heaters must never beused where flooring products will be installed.

The new generation of convex, urethanecasters used on most hospital beds exert atremendous amount of pressure on resilientfloors, causing indentation and/or bucklingproblems. TOLI #900 Epoxy adhesive is recom-mended in the bed area to provide addedendurance and resistance to indentation.

BUILDING CODESInformation on building code requirementsand product compliance can be obtainedfrom TOLI International technical support spe-cialists. Installation must comply with therequirements of applicable code jurisdictions.
