LCCRA Annual Community Garage Sale
The Honking Goose would like to extend a very genuine thanks to Althea Jones and her
committee of Dorothy Hunt and Beatrice Stewart for their excellent job of organizing the
Community Garage Sale again this year. The weather cooperated and the increase in area
vehicle traffic was a strong indication that the fine advertising and coordination of Althea’s
committee paid big dividends for those who participated in this year’s community garage
sale event.

Break-in on Abbey Dawn Drive
The recent break-in on Abbey Dawn Drive has prompted the LCCRA
Executive to publish some home security tips as an awareness
campaign to remind community residents to review your home security.
Home Security Tips
People tend to think of burglary in strictly physical terms – as illegal
access to your home, items taken and/or items destroyed. But burglary
can have a significant impact on a person’s mental well-being. Burglary victims often speak of a
sense of violation. This can lead to feelings of fear, anger and emotional distress, particularly in
children and the elderly.
To protect your loved ones, your property and your home, you are encouraged to improve the
security in and around your home! Although we do not live in a high crime area there is still the
risk of being burgled. To a criminal, there are certain indications that a home is vacant or a
better target for a break and enter. To view a complete list of suggestions to reduce your risk of
becoming a victim go to the LCCRA webpage or visit the Ministry of Community Safety and
Corrections Services, “Home Audit” information page on the internet..
The roundabout at Abbey Dawn & Country Club Drive
We would like to thank all of the Loyalist community who
came out on Saturday 4 June to beautify the traffic circle.
Approximately 40 individuals braved the sunshine, the
fresh air and the neighbourly chatter to plant fifteen flats of
flowers in the three beds … and were rewarded for their
efforts with plenty of our favourite wines and cheeses.
Thanks as well to Pam McCormick of Simply
Landscaping for the design of the beds and all of the
helpful advice she gave to our eager gardeners!
Thanks also to those who could not attend the planting
but did make a monetary contribution. All-in-all enough
money was donated to cover the cost of the flowers. In
addition, the flowers were blessed with an overnight
rainfall that perked them right-up and will get them started on their way. We also received a very
3
generous offer of spring bulbs from one of our neighbours. So please watch this space for a
notice about a late fall planting of bulbs. So whether you
are driving, walking, cycling, or jogging around the circle
(or tracking down an errant chip shot!) take a moment to
appreciate the collective efforts of the community and the
wondrous colours.

Paula Winn’s Tree Dedication in Hawley Court
The Bath Gardening Club held the dedication of the tree planting
in honour of Paula Wynn on Monday, June 6 at 3:00pm. The
dedication in Hawley Park was attended by many friends and
admirers of Paula’s dedication and commitment to the Bath
Gardening Club and the beautification of the Bath community.
The Bath Gardening Club paid tribute to one of its long-standing
members, Paula Winn. Paula and her husband Stuart lived in
LCCC for about 20 years and made many contributions to their
community throughout those years. Paula had been an active
member of the Bath Gardening Club and many of you may
remember her in the Canada Day Parade float as the pretty lady
in the bathtub.
The tribute to Paula was marked by the planting
of a tree in her honour. The tree, a little leaf
linden, was donated by Ken and Ann Albertan.
The plaque, which was donated by Paula’s
brother David Franklin, reads: “In Memory of
Paula Franklin Winn, a long-time resident of
Hawley Court.” This tree was planted in 2015
by the Bath Gardening Club, friends, and her
family. The stone on which the plaque is
mounted came right from Paula’s garden,
compliments of the gentleman who purchased
Paula’s home on her passing.
4
Paula will be missed not only by her friends in
the Bath Gardening Club, but by all members
of the community who knew her and loved her.

They will be available in a number of Main Street stores beginning June 1st and at the Welcome Table in Centennial Park on July 1st. Your support is very much
appreciated. Buy early, buy often!

past winners.
PARADE GRAND MARSHALL
Every year the Canada Day Committee solicits
nominations from the community to honour
someone who has contributed to the life of the
Village and to Canada Day over a significant
period of time. This year Mr. Fire Works, a.k.a.
Kym Fairfax has been chosen as the Parade
Grand Marshall.
As a sixteen year old Kym became fascinated by
the work of the Fire Department and spent
considerable time, as he says, “hanging around”
the station. This went on for a couple of years
until the Fire Chief, Walter Thompkins, got tired of him being there with nothing to do and invited
Kym to join the Department. Thirty-eight years later he is still there.
Kym currently holds the position of Assistant Deputy Chief devoting countless volunteer hours to
the Department and to the community. Luckily for us, Kym’s goal is to be a 50 year volunteer
with the Fire Fighters.
Canada Day in Bath and the Volunteer Firefighters are tightly linked. Putting up the flags on
Main Street, cooking up the Firemen’s Breakfast, leading the parade – complete with water
guns- and the BATH TUB, delighting the kids with the Firemen’s Foam and orchestrating the
best display of fireworks in the area, all of these things are Canada Day fixtures made possible
by the efforts of Kym and the Bath Fire Department.
8
Kym’s involvement with Canada Day began in the late 70’s when he joined the Canada Day
Committee. He went on to co–chair the Committee with Allison Turcotte and in the late 80’s he
took over the fireworks. Training is required for this and for many years, Kym was the only
person qualified. He has ensured that are three other people ready to take over when he steps
back.
Kym and his partner, Brenda Weaver have been together for 30 years raising their blended
family, enjoying their grandchildren and making a difference in our community. We are proud to
honour Kym for his dedication to the Bath community.
CANADA DAY ACTIVITIES
The full schedule of events can be found at www.bathcanadaday.ca
This year there are some new additions to the program. The first is the Electricity Discovery
Centre which will be located near the Kids Zone in Centennial Park. This is an interactive
learning centre designed for kids of all ages. More details are available at
www.hydroone.com/edc/Pages/home.aspx
Music, Music, Music!
Three community groups have stepped up to sponsor musical performances on Canada Day.
In Centennial Park
Kyle Dunn, a local musician and song writer starts us off at 10 am, and at 2pm Fred Brown and
Friends take the stage. Fred is a member of our local Lion’s Club and they are sponsoring his
group.
Shop Local Bath merchants are sponsoring “The ToneKats”, whose leader Dave Bull is a
frequent performer at the Loyalist Grill. “The ToneKats” will be on deck from 6pm to 9pm. This is
a time when things typically quiet down and the merchants want to invite folks to stay or come
back to Centennial Park to listen to this great band before they head over to the fireworks.
Behind Bath School
It’s a short walk from the Park to the Fire Hall where Dave Wreggit of City Music Hub will be
playing recorded songs by 50 local artists starting at 9pm. He will switch to a classical
accompaniment for the fireworks display.
Volunteers are still needed. The jobs listed below require at most a couple hours of your time
and they help make Canada Day special. If you think you could lend a hand, call Joe at 613-
352-7441.
To help direct vendor traffic at the Market in Centennial Park from 7- 9 am
To help with Parade registration and marshalling at Finkle’s Shore Park – 11:30 to 1pm
To be judges for the Children’s Pet and Bike Decorating Contests on June 26th and June
30 respectively.

Introducing our new pharmacy in Bath
Mike Pavagadhi and his wife Greeshma are the owner/operators of a new Pharmasave
franchise located next to the Loyalist Grill in Bath. Mike qualified with a Bachelor of Pharmacy in
India, his home country. After coming to Canada fourteen years ago he needed to re-qualify to
Canadian standards by passing exams given by the Pharmacy Examining boards of Canada in
Toronto. Mike has been working as a Pharmacy Manager at the No Frills Pharmacy in
Napanee for the past seven years and now it’s time to branch out on his own.
“I want to work in a small community where I can
get to know my clients in person” said Mike “As a
Pharmacist I like to give the personal touch, which
is difficult to do in a large centre like Napanee.
Here in Bath we are going to run a full service
Pharmacy which will include:
Free local delivery Competitive dispensing fees Free bubble packs for multiple medications Customer loyalty program Free consultations and most importantly a professional, individual, friendly, and comprehensive
pharmacy service.”
Mike’s wife Greeshma, who also qualified as a pharmacist in India, is presently taking final
exams to obtain her Canadian licence, and will be working in the pharmacy as an assistant to
Mike. Mike, Greeshma and their two children, (ages six and four) are currently living in Napanee
and are planning to move to Bath in the near future. Once settled in, Mike is planning to use his
extensive network to find a family doctor who is willing to partner with the pharmacy and set up
a practice in Bath.
MacKinnon Brothers Beer & Music Festival is back for another year

Update from LaFarge-Holcim Bath Plant
LaFarge – Holcim recently held their monthly Community Liaison Committee meeting and
advised committee members of the following updates:
There will be a new plant manager appointed this week. Richard the present manager
will be moving on to help Lafarge with bigger and better things.
This week is safety week where the employees learn and practice new and old safety
procedures that are used to keep the employees safe both at work and at home. They
also do risk assessment of every procedure used.
There will be a public meeting on July 5th to announce the start of phase two of the
testing of new Low Carbon Fuels, some of which will be non-recycle able beverage
containers, carpet cuttings, recyclable plastics and rubber (not tires). All are welcome.
The public meeting will be held at the Loyalist Golf and Country Club. Watch for
confirmation of time.
The question was asked about the seeming increase in dust and if Lafarge were doing
anything different to contribute to the extra problem. Their answer was “No” and
suggested that the increase in truck traffic to and from the new power plant construction
site might be contributing. Lafarge and the community committee members all believe
the lack of rain is making the farm fields very dry and this, along with the typical winds
we receive, are the main culprits to the dust accumulation. Pollen is also much higher
due to the lack of rain. Lafarge will continue to monitor their procedures.
They recently invited the Girl Guides, Boy Scouts and other young people's groups to
plant many trees on the Lafarge properties.
The week of June 12 there will be more deliveries shipped to the Lafarge docks of the large
equipment for the new co-generator plant. It is quite interesting to see how the large ship and
traffic vehicles move the machinery.

Loyalist Golf Club to host Ontario Junior Girls Championship
Ontario Junior Girls Championship July 4-7/2016
Although we will not be hosting The Great Waterway Classic this year,
Loyalist will be welcoming the Ontario Junior Girls early in July and yes,
there will be volunteer opportunities. This is a Provincial Golf Ontario
Championship and already participants from the GTA and other locations
have registered. No doubt the full field of 54 players will be filled and we will be in for some fine
golfing performances by these young ladies. There will be some registration duties, 3 hole
score reporting, marshalling, timing and other tasks for volunteers and with a smaller number of
participants, volunteer shifts will not be nearly as onerous as we endured during the past couple
of years. We have always enjoyed working with the Golf Association Tournaments and with our
PGA Tour-Canada experience look forward to extending a true professional experience for
these young promising golfers. Hope you can help out, and if you can please use the sign-up
sheet posted in the Member lockers rooms at the clubhouse or send along an email to Dale
Henderson.

ladies league committee members. New members to the league were welcomed and
introduced to the group. As of May 3rd, we had 55 registrations for the league.
All ladies are invited to come to the luncheons even if you are not a member of the ladies
league. Upcoming luncheon dates are as follows: July 12, Aug 2, Sept. 6 and the closing
dinner on Sept 27, 2016. Please sign up on the registration sheet in the ladies locker room or

We encourage all ladies to consider inviting a guest to any golf day. Please indicate on the

Travel and Tips
This is a recent experience of Rick Fortier that he wishes to share with our readers as a travel
tip and general information for those who spend winter months in the USA.
Rick wrote:
After my experience I submitted this issue to the Canadian Snow Bird Association and they
published it in their last magazine...here is what I sent in...
We recently used our Canadian credit card to pay for a meal in a US restaurant. The total was
$22.15 before tip, so I left a $4 tip for a total of $26.15. I noticed a few days later that my
Canadian credit card was charged $53.15 ( in Canadian funds). I know our dollar is low, but not
that low. I inquired with my Canadian bank and was advised that the restaurant charged me
$38.15 US. This represented a $16 tip on a $22 bill. I contacted the restaurant manager and
15
he advised me that my server "made a mistake". It seems that they only do up the "final" credit
charges later in the day and he applied the $16 tip to the wrong bill. I was not convinced of this
and told the manager my views on the issue. This does not occur in Canada, as we have
chip/pin identification on our credit cards and we also enter the tip amount ourselves on hand
held devices. The lesson here (in the USA), always keep you restaurant receipts and check
everyone against your actual purchases, to ensure an employee or manager did not increase
your amount of tip on your credit card.
( Travel and Tips is a regular series on the adventures of LCCRA members. If you have a
travel experience you wish to share, please send the Honking Goose a summary of 600
words or less and a few pictures and we will make sure it gets into our next edition.)
Editorial and other Stuff
The following has been submitted by Doug and Jeri Love, community residents who would like
to comment on local support for local businesses.
House Values in our Community are reflective in Local Business
Support
Hello my name is Doug Love. My wife and I purchased a house in Loyalist last
August. Before we signed on the dotted line we wanted to make sure we were close to
amenities that suited our needs. Things such as a low
crime rate, fire halls, hospitals and social services were on
the top of the list together with grocery stores, gas stations
and last, but not least, LCBO/Beer Store.
Bath was perfect because all the boxes were checked and
ticked. That is why we made the decision to move to this
great community.
We heard horror stories from some of our neighbours that there were a number of years that
Bath did not have a grocery store which meant you had to travel to Napanee, Amherstview or
16
Kingston (a waste of time and gasoline).
Our last home was located close to one of the top rated schools in Ontario and because of that
accessibility our house value was almost $100,000 more than a similar home two street away.
This brings me to a topic near and dear to all our hearts. "House values". At some point we will
all want or need to sell our homes and of course we will want the best price possible. One of
the bestselling features is the convenience of services and grocery shopping. We are truly
blessed to have a store like Schells Market, and to that
point we must support it. They have so much to offer,
for example: fresh fish every Friday, warm baguettes,
meat cut to your liking, the best thick cut bacon
anywhere around, and of course fresh fruit, vegetables
and flowers. Schells Market is staffed by the friendliest
people you could ever meet, who will go out of their way
to assist you with your shopping needs.
We all spend a lot of money to enhance the appearance of our lawns and gardens, why not
invest a little money in our local merchants and protect the overall value of our homes and
community. Help yourself by helping them. Support your local merchants!
