Resident of the Month Jay Thompson
Jay Thompson was born on October 26, 1926, in Willoughby,
Ohio. He is one of four siblings that include two brothers and a
sister. Jay spent most of his childhood in Maricopa, Arizona.
At the age of 17, Jay enlisted in the Navy and trained at the US
Naval Hospital Corps School in San Diego as a pharmacy techni-
cian. He remembers sleeping in a tent on the grounds of Balboa
Park near the Lilly Pond. After completing training he was as-
signed to the Naval Construction Battalion Center in Port
Hueneme, Calif.
Jay met his future wife, Teresa in Fontana and later raised four
children in San Bernardino and Walnut, California. Jay be-
came a buyer for a small chain of department stores called the
Harris Co. and would travel throughout Europe for business.
He was later recruited by the George-Good Corp. and became
a designer and importer of quality giftware from Asia. It is in-
teresting to note that Jay invented the first musical Christmas
greeting card, which became a big seller. He learned to speak
Mandarin and has fond memories of journeys abroad, making
new friends and experiencing their cultures.
After retirement, Jay and Teresa moved to Valley Center in
San Diego and built a custom home. He grew organic oranges
and sold his crop to commercial juicers throughout Southern
California.
Jay has twelve grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and
another one on the way. This will be the sixth child named after
him.
Jay brings extra sunshine to our Sunshine Care family!

GARDEN GATE
Hello fellow gardening enthusiasts!
Hello fellow gardeners!
Summer is in full swing here in the gardens. Thousands of pounds of tomatoes, bell peppers, cucumbers, zucchini, eggplant, tree fruit
and lettuce are finding their way to the daily menus for our residents. We will keep up this pace through the end of August. Residents
and children in our “Seed to Table” program have enjoyed the cherry tomatoes and corn in the Children’s Garden.
Don’t let our summer heat slow you down from continuing to plant your favorite summer vegetables. Make sure your flower beds and
color gardens are well mulched to cool down the soil temperatures, retain moisture and fend off weeds. Check your irrigation system
for clogging to maximize your watering patterns. Perform light pruning on your citrus and deciduous fruit trees to keep them managea-
ble for ease of harvest.
This month’s free Garden Lecture will be held on Saturday, July 20st @ 10:30 am. Our speaker will be Connie Beck, Horticultural Con-
sultant, telling us how to tackle “Hillside Gardening”. So stay cool and don’t let our Poway heat keep you from the enjoyment of work-
ing in the garden!
