Mid-Residence Review
Studentsmustsuccessfullycompleteamid-residencereviewattheendofthesecondsemester(MFA)orthefourthsemester(BFA).StudentswhoarenotinvitedtocontinueinaprogramasaresultofnotpassingtheirreviewmayhavetheoptionofapplyingtoanotherprogramorschooloftheInstitute,ormay,insomecases,berecommendedfortheIndependentTheaterTrack.Thethirdoptionistopursuetheirstudiesatanotherinstitution.

Studentsmustcompletetheprogramofstudyapprovedbythementorandthestudent,whichwillincludetherequiredcoursesspecifiedintheSchoolofTheaterCourseRequirementssectionofthisCourseCatalogandcompriseaminimumof120units.

Master of Fine Arts and Advanced Certificate of Fine Arts

Independent Theater Track
Duringastudent’scareerintheSchoolofTheater,ateitherundergraduateorgraduatelevels,mentorsmayrecommendthatastudentmightbeeligiblefortheIndependentTheaterTrack.Thisrecommendationisbasedonthementor’sevaluationofthestudent’swork,strengthsandinterests.Therecommendationisthenforwardedtothefullfacultyforitsapproval.Followingthistrackisanoptionforhighlymotivatedanddisciplinedstudentswhothefacultybelieveswouldbenefitfromabroaderrangeofstudy.Thisisanupperdivisiontrackandacceptanceisbyinvitationonly.Selectionismadepriortothemid-residencereviewforundergraduates,andbeforetheendofthefirstyearforgraduatestudents.Thereisneitherrecruitmentnorauditioningforit.Eachstudent’scurriculumwillbeindividuallydesigned,basedonawrittenproposalandoutlineofcourses.RequirementsforgraduationwithaBFAarefouryearsandaminimumof120units,ofwhich46mustbeinCriticalStudies.Forthethree-yearMFA,aminimumof60unitsisrequired.

Inthe1970’s,thephrase‘makingafashionstatement’becameliteralwiththeemergenceofthemessageT-shirt.Onceconsideredunderwear,thesewalkingbillboardsofself-expressionbecametherageofthe70’s.Wordrobewilllookagainattheintersectionofclothing,words,andtypographicexpressioninwaysthatseektoblurtheboundariesbetweenart,design,writingandtheatre-removingthe“costume”andtypographyfromtheirtraditionalrole.We’llexplorepossibilitiesthroughproject-basedcollaborationsbetweenstudentsinCostumeDesignandGraphicDesign.
