As boarding students, we find at
Hockaday a residential program
unlike any other. Not simply because
of the supportive community that
opens its arms to us, but most of all
because of the doors of opportunity
that open before us—opportunities
to grow academically, athletically,
artistically, and socially.
E x per iences of a Lifetime
For generations, girls from Texas, from across
the United States, and from around the world have
lived at Hockaday, learning, gaining friendships,
pursuing ambitions, and creating warm memories
that last a lifetime. Residence students in grades
eight through twelve create a thriving community
of their own while enriching our larger student
community in countless ways. They contribute unique
perspectives, languages, and talents to the life
of our school.

Intimate, diverse, secure, rewarding—that is the community we are part
of as Hockaday residence students. Here we build independence while
living in the nurturing environment of an outstanding college-preparatory
school. We study together, attend classes together, and laugh together.
We are more than friends; we are like a family. Our local host families are
always close by to offer a quick shopping excursion or an invitation for
an evening of good food, conversation, and relaxation. Living at Hockaday,
we feel welcomed, supported, challenged, and—ultimately—well prepared
for college and life.

Set in 100 acres of grounds within a beautiful residential neighborhood,
our school is our own special place. In our two dorms, girls of the same
grade share rooms, and we are encouraged to personalize our rooms, just
like home. Each hall has its own full-time counselor to advise, counsel,
and keep a caring adult eye on us. Living at Hockaday isn’t just comfortable
and secure—it’s fun. There is always activity in the lounges and kitchens
or out on the athletic fields. The school provides bikes, games, and sporting
equipment, even transportation for shopping, errands, and social and
cultural events.

Superb facilities allow us to focus on our studies while making boarding
life relaxed and comfortable. The residence halls’ rooms and lounges have
an atmosphere more like a home than a dorm and include WiFi, plasma
televisions, and full kitchens so we can bake treats or make our favorite meals
whenever we want. On campus we are surrounded by endless opportunities
to grow as individuals through theater, dance, and music ensembles; sports
teams; and clubs for ever y imaginable interest. Hockaday prov ides
abundant off-campus experiences as well, from concerts, plays, and museums
to restaurants, malls, and sporting events.

Our program for international students helps advanced and intermediate
English speakers become immersed and at home in the Hockaday academic
environment. As international students, we live and learn English. We learn
in specially designed classes that stress the four components of language:
speaking, l istening, reading, and writ ing. We live English in our academic
courses, sports, extracurricular activities, and spirited, fun community
of our classmates. It al l helps us learn to communicate w ith confidence.

In academics and in character, Hockaday prepares us for higher education.
After all, that has been our school’s mission and its legacy to all its students for
nearly 100 years. Yet, as residence students, we also gain advantages all our
own. Time and again, academic research has found that boarding students
achieve classroom success and career advancement at higher rates than
others and that the personal values shaped in a supportive and motivating
environment bear fruit in a lifetime of leadership and service.
