WITH THANKS

The Kingsmead Book Fair, now celebrating its fifth year, has numerous people to thank for its growth and success. Without the generous financial support of our primary sponsors: 702, RMB Private Bank, Porcupine Ridge, Cell Cand Timberland, we could not have developedinto a significant event on South Africa’sliterary calendar.

The literary programme, which includes the main programme for adults, young adults, teens and children, took months in the making. Huge thanks goes to voracious reader and Kingsmead College librarian Ann Leith, Michele Magwood, our sage literary advisor from the Sunday Times, gratitude to 702’s Andiswa Makanda, for her passion for this event, Sally Herbert, who has worked on The Kingsmead Book Fair since inception and Lyndsay Barr, whose focus onthe social responsibility of the event ismuch appreciated.

We would also like to thank Lindy Truswell and Lynn Lombart for curating the most wonderful Children’s Programme, packed with everything a literary festival should include: literature, drama, art and music. Our expanded offering for the teens is thanks to Nazira Osman.

We thank the publishing houses for their continued commitment to this event and Exclusive Books for the beautiful book storeson campus.

SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

“You don’t have to be rich to save the world”, Philani Dladla, The Pavement Bookworm. Kingsmead College runs a book drive collection in the run-up to the Kingsmead Book Fair. This year, Philani Dladla, aka The Pavement Bookworm, moved his pavement bookshop to outside Kingsmead College.

The money raised from the sale of these books will be used for his Young Readers’ Club for underprivileged children in Joubert Park, Johannesburg. The club caters for underprivileged and at-risk youths. Many of the children involved in this club have already shown a marked improvement in their school results since joining the club and discovering their love of reading.Philani has used his love of books to overcome drug addiction and change his lot in life. Check out his awesome website www.pavementbookworm.co.za. In 2015, Kingsmead College collected almost 4000 books that were distributed to five schools in the community (St Vincent’s School for the Deaf, Parkhurst Primary, Parktown Public, HA Jack and Vuleka Primary School). This donation of books helped resuscitate their libraries and fuel interest in books at these schools.

The Kingsmead College Outreach team arranged for five children’s authors to visit these schools to read and entertain the children. The Outreach team also provides funding for St Vincent’s School for the Deaf (www.stvincentschool.org.za) students to attend The Kingsmead Book Fair, as well as children from Rays of Hope (www.raysofhope.co.za). Please visit their website to sponsor a student for R250, R500 or R1000 per month.“For these are all our children, we will all profit by, or pay for, what they become”, James Baldwin. The Kingsmead Book Fair supports theLink Reading Programme, a non-profit organisation which supports the development of literacy and numeracy for disadvantaged children. The programme is always looking for volunteers to give of their time to help children to read. Please get involved and change lives (www.thelinkliteracyproject.co.za). We also support Read to Rise, a non-profit organisation committed to promotingyouth literacy in schools in South Africa’s under-resourced communities (www.readtorise.co.za). Please visit the website to see how you can make a difference. Universal Healthcare sponsors the sign language interpreters (www.universal.co.za).Added to this, a significant portion of the funds raised at the Kingsmead Book Fair goes towards Kingsmead’s Bursary Fund, which sponsors the education of talented girls at the school.
