Writing Your First Proposal

Begin early - three to six months is not too early.

Be innovative—if your idea isn’t brand new, find an angle that is.

Do your homework, so that you know where your project fits and you can find your own niche.

Call a program officer. Summarize your project and get feedback on it.

10

Writing Your First Proposal

Contact ORSP as early as possible to start working on your budget and deal with things like Human Subjects.

Follow guidelines to the letter.

Write clearly, succinctly, and correctly. Graphics help.

Provide enough detail so that your reader knows what you are talking about.

11

Writing Your First Proposal

Give yourself time for someone to read and critique your proposal. Revise on the basis of that input.

Do not rush the submission project. Electronic submission may make things slower, not faster.

If you don’t get funded, make sure you get your reviews and use that input in developing your next proposal.
