Clea Antoniou Year 17/8/2014

Clea Antoniou 902525 Year 1 Term 4

RESEARCH PROJECT 3:

1. ACT I - Setup: During an awkward dinner party, our protagonist is introduced as a shy, intimidated girl. Her flaw of being withdrawn and closed-off is obvious as she avoids eye contact and folds her arms, yet she desperately craves companionship. She and her friend are both on a date with this guy and they are both trying to compete with one another for his attention.

ACT II – The “Special World”: Our protagonist slowly begins to make contact with the boy and subtly displays signals of interest towards him. Although some of her attempts are unsuccessful, as the antagonist gets in the way, she doesn’t stop slowly trying to push the antagonist out.

ACT III - The End:Our protagonist bumps the antagonist’s fork off of the table. When the antagonist ducks down to fetch it, the protagonist and boy lean in for a kiss.

2. Our primary target audience are middle to upper-class Females ages 14- 25. I say this because females can relate easier to the story. Most girls can relate to the awkward feeling on a date as well as wanting the same thing as one of your friends. I would say middle to upper-class because the decor and set of the film will be highly decorative and over the top and people who have experience similar surroundings will be able to relate better visually. Ages 14- 25, these are the ages where teenagers and young adults tend to date the most. They understand and can relate to how an awkward date feels and know how to suppress the awkwardness. The subculture of our target audience aesthetically would be of the gothic and skateboarding culture as Tom, the deuteragonist, is a skater boy and Layla, our protagonist, has gothic influenced.Because our film is a comedy, our audience needs to have the ability to appreciate humour.

3. The narrative character binary of the protagonist would be shy vs. Confident.

4. The narrative event binary would be Awkward (Act 1) vs. Comfortable (Act 3)

5. The narrative concept that would be effective in affecting our audience would be the concept of awkward dates. Most girls have experienced the awkwardness of being around a guy who you may be interested in and end up embarrassing yourself more and more as your time with him progresses. The film is leaving the audience with the message to just be you and not fear what others think. If they don’t like you then they are not worth your time.

6. The relevant mood and emotion we want our audience to feel is humour through our characters awkwardness. The film is a comedy, and so we want them to experience a mood on consonance through dissonance as they will be laughing at an uncomfortable situation which the characters experience. When colouring the film aesthetically, we will portray them in a dark gothic influenced restaurant emphasising the dissonance of the situation. The narrative and performance will carry the consonance of the dinner.

7. How I will dress the characters:Our protagonist, Layla, will have a gothic influenced style. She will be wearing a black lace dress with a red belt, slightly torn black stockings, and black ankle boots. In the beginning of the film she will be wearing a black cardigan, and as she begins to feel more comfortable she will take it off to give the audience a sense of consonance. Her make-up will be dark. Contoured cheekbones, dark or blood red lipstick and dark eye shadow. She will be accessorized with a pendant around her neck, three rings, and multiple bracelets. Her nail polish will be a deep purple or even black.

Our deuteragonist, Tom, will have a skater influenced style, yet also slightly gothic. He will be wearing worn black jeans with a hole or two in them, old broken shoes, a black or deep purple t-shirt and a blazer with rolled up sleeves, maybe a hat on his head. I will accessorise him with a red bracelet to match Layla’s belt, he will be wearing about 6 rings, maybe gloves that are cut by his fingers and a neck chain around his neck.A reference of his style would be Bam Margera from “Jackass” and also “Bam’s unholy union”- A series displayed on mtv in 2007.

Our antagonist, Stacey, will have a girlie, almost Barbie style. She will be dressed in pastel colour clothing, mostly pinks; white top, pink skirt, pink cardigan, black stockings and pink pumps. The reason that she will be wearing colours while Tom and Layla aren’t is to emphasize to the audience that she is the antagonist and we don’t want her and Tom to be together in the end. A reference of her style would be the character Regina George from the film Mean Girls.

The set will be of a gothic influenced dinner party. The chairs will be red, the table black, on the table will be candle holders with red candles inside, there will be an ostrich egg as a centre piece as a signal of our South African Culture. There will be a vase with three roses inside, two red and one white rose symbolizing Layla and Tom in a romantic way and Stacey being the third wheel.A reference of what the set is going to look like would be MIKA - Popular Song ft. Ariana Grande.

8. To ensure that my styling design of character dress is specifically relevant to my target audience my plan is to create the wardrobe of my protagonist to blend into the background of the set showing that she is a bit of a wallflower in the beginning. The film is specifically focusing on putting ones fears a side and achieving ones goals. The message is to not care what people think of you. Later in the story, as Layla begins to feel more comfortable, she will take off her cardigan as a gesture of comfort. Gils aging between 14- 24 need this reminder and so aesthetically they will find this film pleasing.

9. To ensure that my styling design of character dress is generally relevant to my target audience my plan is to create a scene where humour and awkwardness mix together and become a whole and creating a sense of Consonance through Dissonance. I will Aesthetically recreate this concept aesthetically by making a set of a very dark, almost gothic sense. The reason why I will make the set in this way is to emphasise the dissonance.

10. To ensure that my styling design of character dress is culturally relevant to my target audience my plan is to carry a sense of the gothic nature throughout the film. Our target audience culture is South African. Their sub-culture is Goth. We will show the South African influences by having an ostrich egg as the centre piece and serving Boerwors rolls as a meal, which is a typical South African dish. We will portray our subculture of Goth in the film by the general dinner arrangement all being influenced by darkness. Our protagonist is goth influenced and our deuteragonist is both skater and goth.
