Lauren Rabaino December 8, 2009 Jour 401 Up-close and personal with two foreign correspondents The two foreign correspondents I interviewed – one from R euters covering the UN, the other from the LA Times covering South Africa – had very different experiences and ways of covering issues in their respective countries, but both abided by the same general principles of contextual reporting. Joy Elliott The first international correspondent, Joy Elliott, is a journalist who identifies strongly with her print background. She grew up in rural Jamaica before coming to the United States where she reported and edited international, national and regional news for the Associated Press, according to an article about her from the Maynard Institute. About that experience at the wire service, Elliott said, "I considered my experience at the wire service being a foreign correspondent because I was then a recent migrant to this country. Having left that service regretfully, I moved to another wire service with a larger overseas readership for more pay." The wire service she moved onto was the Reuters in 1972, where she worked on the copy desk and later covered the United Nations General Assembly. After getting her start in the United States as foreign correspondent, she went on to cover different countries. According to her personal biography, she did "cutting-edge" reporting and e diting at UN special conferences in Panama City, Panama; Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; Istanbul, Turkey; Dakar, Segal; and Rome, Italy. In addition to the AP and Reuters, she has worked for the Earth Times and the Women's Feature Service. Today, she is a volunteer producer for a media watch program on U.S. public access television, according to her biography. Analysis of Joy Elliott's writings Because Elliott has been out of the industry for a few years, it was harder to find her articles online. Thankfully for Lexis-Nexis, I was able to pull a few of her old articles out of the archives in which she covered the United Nations for wire services in the U.S. and Canada. One article called "World economy set for further growth, U.N. says ; Continued strength seen for North America," Elliott covered the global economy for a North American audience. To convey the impact, she related her coverage directly back to how it would affect Americans. In another article entitled, "Caribbean Isles plan Columbus galas," Elliott covered the 500th anniversary celebrations of Christopher Columbus's arrival in the New World for the North American wire services. Her article gave a lot historical context to the arrival of Christopher Columbus and on Jamaica's history of celebrating the holiday. She contextualizes every reference so that there is no lack of clarity for her North American readers who may not be familiar with Jamaica's traditions. In 2000 for the New York Beacon, Elliott wrote an article entitled, "Harlem in the Early 20th Century: Black Activists." In the article, she covered Caribbean migrants' traveling to the United States
