NCHRP- National Cooperative

Highway Research Program

• An AASHTO program sponsored by state DOTs

• Started in 1962

• Covers all aspects of highways.

• Considers problem statements ONLY from AASHTO member departments (individually or through AASHTO committees) and FHWA

• Annual funding ~ $40 million/year

NCHRP: Goal-Oriented Research

• Responds to state DOT needs: DOTs and AASHTO committees propose research topics;

AASHTO R&I Committee selects projects. About half of NCHRP projects related to

maintenance were proposed by MAC.

• Ensures applicability of the results: Practitioners from State DOTs and other sectors of the

highway industry participate in monitoring the research. MAC members serve on almost

every panel dealing with maintenance.

• Produces practical, ready-to-use results: Research products are prepared as guides,

manuals, specifications, test methods, tools, etc. for use by state DOTs and other

organizations, and adoption by AASHTO. Many products have ben published by AASHTO.

NCHRP projects cover all maintenance-related topics: - Maintenance of pavements, - Maintenance of bridges and structures, - Snow and ice control, - Equipment, - Roadside maintenance, and- Etc. (workforce, administration, …)

Participate in Panels

• Research Project Panels: Develop RFP, Review proposals, select contractor,

review progress and final reports, provide oversight, interact with peers

• Synthesis Project Panels: Develop scope of work, select consultant, review

survey, review draft and final reports

• Project 20-123 panels: Represent AASHTO Committee and its intent.

• Domestic Scans: Help plan activity, select consultant, review report, share

state practices with other members and with other agencies.

• Prepare briefing materials for senior management

Recently completed projects are candidates for dissemination/implementation.

Guide for Performance Measures in Snow and Ice Control

This Guide is available as Part II of NCHRP Research Report 889, Performance Measures in Snow and Ice Control. A Microsoft-Excel-based tool and user guide (available as Part III of the report) are also available.

Objective: To facilitate the adoption by state DOTs of the guide for performance measures in snow and ice control (produced in NCHRP Project 14-34) through information dissemination, outreach, training, and demonstration.
