Research Proposal What is a research proposal?
• Is referred to as an outline which is a structured plan of your proposed
thesis.
• It is how the researcher tells someone else about a piece of proposed
research
The goal of a research proposal is twofold:
- To present and justify the need to study a research problem
- To present the practical ways in which the proposed study should be
conducted.
Research Proposal
Purposes of the research proposal
• To organise and clarify your thesis process.
• To convince your thesis committee.
• To contract with your advisor.
• To meet ethical requirements
Research Proposal
Content of Research Proposal
• Title - likely to change during the process
• Background - context within the literature. How my research is relates to
what has been done before about this topic. Main theories about the topic.
• Research questions and objectives - what you seek to achieve
Research Proposal
Content of Research Proposal
• Method/s - can be in two parts: research design and data collection
Qualitative or Quantitative, Primary data, or secondary, the methods of data
collection, sampling, analysis techniques
• Timescale – A timeline schedule for completing the thesis.
• Resources - (finance, data access, equipment)
• References - include some key literature sources

Research Proposal
Basic Proposal Structure
Introduction
• Describe the issue you plan to study
• Research questions
• Research objectives
• Definitions
• Why you are interested in this topic?
• Why this area is important?
• Who will benefit form your research?
Research Proposal
Literature Review: the function
1. It positions the research in terms of the real world and puts the research
into context.
2. It may provide a conceptual and theoretical framework for the study.
3. It discusses the research issues. In doing this, it:
a) demonstrates that the researcher has an understanding of the
issue in terms of existing literature and research;
b) identifies and discusses the limitations of earlier research;
c) identifies and discusses the ‘gaps’ in existing knowledge that the
research will fill.
4. It leads to the definitive research question(s).
Research Proposal
Methods
- Data collection
What is your method of data collection? And why you’ve chosen this
method? You may need to include a draft data collection tool (interview
questions, questionnaire or surveys)
- Research population and sampling
State the nature of the population and sample size
Research Proposal
Methods
- Data analysis strategy
It should be compatible with your data collection process. This will help to
test reliability and validity
- Ethical issues
You may need to include ethical statement
Research Proposal
Dissemination
It is the question of what you are going to do with your
research?
- Publication
- Policy plan
- Or it is just part of a study requirement
