RESEARCH INTO TELEVISION CHANNELS & AUDIENCE

ITV1
The television channel ITV1 is one of the largest and most popular
channel in the united kingdom. ITV1 is a public service broadcaster and
it produce programmes for the widest possible range of viewers. For
example we see programs from Xfactor and The Jeremy Kyle show to
shows like Downton Abbey. We can understand from this that the
channel has a wide range of programs all appealing to different people
suggesting that the channels target audience would be people
between the ages of 16 to 34. This is because this age range covers all
ages that the channel appeals to.
ITV1
The channel was originally launched on the 22nd September 1955 and is owned by ITV
plc. Regionality is also key to ITV1s public service remit. Each ITV area will show a
minimum number of hours of regional programmes – including news, current
affairs and a range of other programmes – each week designed specifically for
viewers in that area. These regional plans and aspirations are described in the
Statements of each ITV licensee. In addition, ITV1 will spend at least half of its
commissioned programme budget (network and regional programmes) outside
London and the M25 area.
ITV1Whilst principally targeted at mass audiences, ITV1 also shows
programmes for particular sections of the audience: for example children,
adults under 35, men, and people watching at home during the day. ITV1 has
no specific remit to cater for specific minorities or to be innovative in form or
content, though these qualities will be present in the schedule from time to
time. The Communications Bill published in November 2002 proposes that
ITV1s statutory remit shall, from enactment during the course of 2003, become
“the provision of a range of high quality and diverse programming”. That is
what
ITV has sought to offer throughout its nearly fifty years of broadcasting.
