Research into Institutions

The CommitmentsThe Commitments is a 1991 comedy-drama film, which tells the story of working class Dubliners who form a soul band. This film is a similar film to mine, as it is a drama based on music, so looking at the institution of it helps understand what my film’s institution will be. The Commitments is an international co-production between companies in Ireland, the United Kingdom, and the United States. It was filmed on location in Dublin. The production company is ‘Beacon Communications’ which is not so well known. The film is low budget at $14.9 million box office and it is more of a British film. This would be the sort of production company that my film may have been made by, as it is low budget and is not aimed as being a big worldwide film. However, this film was distributed by 20th Century Fox, which is a well known company, therefore if my film was distributed by a company like this, then it could promote my film, making more of a budget at box office.

Almost FamousAlmost Famous is a 2000 comedy-drama film, which tells the story of a teenage journalist writing for Rolling Stone magazine in the early 1970s while covering the fictitious rock band Stillwater, and his efforts to get his first cover story published. This is very similar to my film as my protagonist is a teenage boy also, on a journey to succeed. The production company for this film is Vinyl Films, which isn’t so well known, but in the title includes a music reference, suggesting the type of audience that would be interested in this film, and the film was distributed by DreamWorks in America and Columbia Pictures in other countries. Both companies are well known, and is an American made film. The budget was high with $60 million. Although the storyline is similar to my film, this is a very high budget Hollywood movie, which is different to how mine was made, therefore my film would more likely be made by companies that worked with The Commitments, rather than Almost Famous.
