WHAT IS ENGINEERING? ENGINEERING:

A profession of ACQUIRING and APPLYING scientific knowledge in order to design new processes and products! It combines: Natural sciences

Physics, Chemistry, Material science, etc. Mathematics

Page 6: Research in Electrical engineering

RESEARCH IN SCIENCE Problem type: What is the

underlying mechanism/theory? Scientific method

Define the problem Research what’s been done before Use creativity!

Form a hypothesis (testable prediction)

Test hypothesis (actual experiment) Analyze data (could be more involved

than you would expect) Form conclusions Take appropriate actions based on

conclusions

RESEARCH IN ENGINEERING Research in applied science and

product development Process

Define the problem Research what’s been done before Lots of thinking

Create criteria May be known Use scientific method to determine

Design product Computer simulations

Optimization Improve it!

Build a prototype and TEST!

WHAT IS YOUR RESEARCH TOPIC?

A PhD student’s answer usually sounds as strange as this:“I am fighting windmills!”

Don Quixote

Research is a very deep and focused activity driven by passion and curiosity!

Thousands of researchers contribute to the knowledge of humanity

Page 10: Research in Electrical engineering

HOW IS RESEARCH FUNDED? Government Funding

Department of Defense Department of Energy etc…

Private Funding Industry and university cooperation Private research institutions

Page 11: Research in Electrical engineering

MISSIONS OF NSF Initiate and support, scientific and engineering

research and programs through grants and contracts Award graduate fellowships in the sciences and in

engineering Support activities related to international

cooperation, national security and the effects of scientific and technological applications upon society

Support activities designed to increase the participation of women and minorities and others underrepresented in science and technology

RADIATING AND RECEIVING ANTENNAS

Device that transforms guided signal into radiated electromagnetic waves and vice versa

f=400-800 MHz=75-38 cm

f=20-400 MHz=15-0.75m

f=1-2 GHz=30-15cm

f= 5 THz=60m

Physical dimensions are related to wavelength. wavelength=(speed of light)/(frequency)

=c/f

A cellular phone antenna works at around 109 Hz=1GHz

Our design frequency:193 Terahertz (1012Hz=1THz), almost 200,000 times the frequency of your phone! f= 193 THz

=1.5m

SEMICONDUCTORS AND SILICON Semiconductor: Neither insulator, nor

conductor Controllable behavior, switching from insulator to

conductor or vice versa Basics of electronic devices

Silicon: One of the most abundant elements

Page 15: Research in Electrical engineering

OPTICAL ANTENNA INTEGRATED WITH SILICON

Micron-level design Fiberoptics integrated

with semiconductors! Control of radiation level

λ = 1550 nm (1 nm = 10-9 m) f = c / λ = 1931012 Hz (f ≈ 2106f of cell phone)
