The success of research ultimately depends on the individuals who lead and implement research initiatives. In UP, faculty members play a major role in establishing, nurturing and sustaining a vibrant research culture and productive research process in UP through generations. They are responsible for the research mentoring and leadership training of our students to ensure that graduate and undergraduate education in UP, in addition to foundational and general education and rote and iterative learning, is infused with a strong orientation towards research, innovation, creativity and problem-solving. High-quality research is the paramount activity in a research university. Research elevates the quality of education and accelerates academic productivity. Research also greatly improves the quality of our extension work, providing rigorous, scientific analysis, and innovative, technological solutions to pressing problems in society.

There is no universal solution to our problems, but we can work together, building the parts toward the solution.

Assumption 3:
The Mathematics Division Research Thrusts should be DIRECTED towards at least one specific goal. Yet it remains OPEN for new opportunities, maximizing the pool of experts in the Division.
“Directed” means the Division should identify the priority research areas to maximize the impact of the research outputs and to maximize efficiency of delivery (i.e., minimize costs)
”Open” means the Division should not discriminate fields of expertise and reasonable research interests of faculty members but rather the Division should create an agenda which can maximize the knowledge and skills of faculty members towards innovation.
NOW, HERE IS THE MATHEMATICS DIVISION’SRESEARCH AGENDA
The Mathematics Spectrum
Theoretical Mathematics
ApplicationAreas
Applied Mathematics
The Mathematics Spectrum
Theoretical Mathematics
ApplicationAreas
A research will be classified based on how “theoretical” or “applied” the study is.
Applied Mathematics
The Mathematics Spectrum
Basic researches (e.g., studies on theoretical mathematics) are essential in two ways:1. They are the foundations of the “bridge” (applied mathematics).

Basic researches (e.g., studies on theoretical mathematics) are essential in two ways:2. They can be used to enhance knowledge discovery and innovation in the academe, which is one of the national goals.
Applied Mathematics
The Mathematics Spectrum
Theoretical Mathematics
ApplicationAreas
Applied Mathematics have different levels of applicability:Some researches are “applicable” but are closer to theoretical mathematics. Example: formulating algorithms and theorems on error control.

ApplicationAreas
Applied Mathematics have different levels of applicability:On the other side of the spectrum, some researches are directly translatable to strategies, policies or products that address issues in the application areas.

Towards the National Goals
Theoretical Mathematics
ApplicationAreas
Applied Mathematics
A national goal in at least one of the vital sectors
Prioritization
Research topics that belong to the green area of the spectrum and that are justifiable to address one of the national goals will be prioritized.
