To: Water Treatment Plant Equipment Suppliers Date: 18 May 2017 Enquiries: 017 799 3505 Ref: MPGXC004652 REQUEST FOR INFORMATION (RFI) ON THE Supply and Specifications of Alternative Demineralised Vessel Spray/Regen Collector Nozzles for Resin Regeneration at Majuba Power Station Eskom Holdings SOC Limited (“Eskom”) invites you to submit information regarding the supply and

specifications of alternative demineralised vessel spray/regen collector nozzles for resin

regeneration at Majuba Power Station.

Eskom would like to analyse the nozzle market’s capability in manufacturing and supplying the

nozzles that are due for an upgrade in the cation and anion vessels at Majuba Power Station. The

following information is required for Eskom to assess credible suppliers:

1 INTRODUCTION

Majuba Power Station is situated between Volksrust and Amersfoort in the Mpumalanga, South

Africa. Demineralised water at Majuba Power Station is produced using ion exchange technology.

The water treatment plant is designed to operate with three demin trains, each consisting of a cation

exchanger and anion exchanger, vacuum degasser, atmospheric degasser, and a mixed bed

exchanger. The cation and anion exchangers are each equipped with 160 spray/regen collector

nozzles on their intermediate collectors that are used during the backwashing and reagent injection

stages of the resin regeneration sequences. Therefore, 960 spray/regen collector nozzles in total.

These nozzles are due for replacement with nozzles that will provide improved temperature,

pressure and chemical resistance.

The original nozzles are now obsolete, and a suitable replacement is required.

2 BACKGROUND

2.1 OBJECTIVE

The main aim of this Request for Information (RFI) is to determine whether there are

suppliers/contractors in the market that are capable of supplying alternative spray/regen collector

nozzles with similar dimensions to the existing nozzles used at Majuba Power Station Water

Treatment Plant but with improved temperature, pressure and chemical resistance. Furthermore, the

RFI seeks to determine the capital cost, operating specifications and supply lag time that would be

associated with new nozzles.

2.2 SCOPE

The requirements of the RFI for the new spray/regen collector nozzles are as follows:

1) The new nozzles to be supplied will be installed on the intermediate collector of each of the

anion and cation vessels. The intermediate collectors are indicated on Figure 1 in section

2.3.

2) The new nozzles must ensure that the regeneration of the cation and anion resin must be as

per design specifications. The regeneration information is provided in section 2.5.

3) Information of the mass and dimension of the new nozzles must be included.

4) Information of the proposed material of construction and operating conditions of the new

nozzles must be included. (Possible alternatives include a stainless steel 316 wedge wire

type nozzle).

5) Supply details such as minimum quantity to be ordered, time lines for manufacturing and

supply, etc. must be indicated.

6) A budget capital cost for supply and delivery of the new nozzles must be included.

7) Information on challenges or risks in providing the new nozzles, if any, must be indicated.

8) Indicate if the supplier is available to perform the installation of the nozzles. Cost to be

included in budget cost.

9) Indicate any exclusion from Contractor’s supply.

2.3 Ion Exchange Vessel Specifications

Each of the demineralised water trains produces up to 280 m3/hr of demineralised water. The

anion and cation vessel is regenerated counter-currently.

The cation resin used is Dowex Marathon C (H+) and the anion resin is Amberlite IRA (Cl-).

The average size of the resin is 0.550-0.650 mm

A sketch of the Demin Ion Exchange Vessels is provided below:

2.5 Resin Regeneration

The main purpose of the spray/regen collector nozzles is to collect the spent regenerate chemicals during counter current regeneration of the resin. The efficiency is improved by applying a suction pressure on the intermediate collector laterals. Also the nozzles must be resistant to corrosive chemicals. The replacement nozzles must be able to withstand the operating conditions described below.
