First, he told them to continue to develop their minds, for the mind allows man to develop, survive and be distinguished from other living beings. Dr. Johnson noted that about 65 per cent of the class plan to enter institutions of higher learning.
Second, the speaker said the students should participate in democratic society, because the problems deriving from mater- j | ^ \ . ial progress seem best solved p r through government. A government is only as strong as its citizenry, and public high school education in the United States makes democracy p o s s i b l e through enlightened citizens.
Finally, Dr. Johnson urged the graduates to sharpen their powers of appreciation for nature and man. He told them not to forget the beauty of nature and the legacy of man. which includes material things and knowledge as well as direct help from contemporaries.
