    Welcome toThe Republic of Texas

Triathlon Festival!Triathlon has a long and rich history inCorpus Christi. For years, many of Texastriathletes traveled south for the CorpusChristi Triathlon to start their season. It isone of the longest standing events on the na-tional triathlon calendar, and has certainlyearned its reputation as a great event. Thisweekend marks the beginning of a new erafor triathlon in the Coastal Bend as the Cor-

pus Christi Triathlon becomes the Republicof Texas Triathlon! We are thrilled to be

partnering with the City of Corpus Christiand H-E-B to create The Republic of Tex-as Triathlon and we are proud to continuethe legacy of one of triathlons pioneeringevents.

This event would not be possible withoutthe support and cooperation of the CorpusChristi community. Wed especially like tothank the City of Corpus Christi, includingTrafc Engineering, Parks & Recreation,CC Police, the Gulf Beach Life Guards; theTexas Department of Transportation, theCorpus Christi Tri Club, H-E-B, the OmniHotel, the Mayors Fitness Council, AC-TIVE Life, CPL Energy, the Caller Times, and of course all of our friends at the Cor-

requires extensive road clo-sures. Please be aware thatroads may be in the processof closing or already closedearly in the morning of the

    event.

ParkingAvailable parking locationscan be found on the map.Parking is also available at

    the Omni hotel.

    The Republic of Texas Triath-

lon is a fantastic event venue

to watch a triathlon. The down-

town, multi-loop format allowsfor several opportunities to see

    your athlete. Spectators are wel-

come to roam the event site and

cheer on their friends and fam-

ily members. There are very few

places that spectators will not be

allowed, but there are a few rules

    & guidelines:

    (1) Do not enter any part of the

    race course.

    (2) Use designated crosswalks

    only when instructed by volun-

teers and always look both ways

and behind you before crossingthe course.

    (3) Please do not jump fences,

    sneak through gaps, or cross

    marked boundaries.

    (4) Please do not challenge vol-

    unteers. They are providing in-

structions for a reason and are

    most concerned about the ath-

    letes safety.

    (5) Spectators and/or family

members are not allowed into the

    transition area.

    (6) Spectators are welcome to

help themselves to water. Of-cial race food and drink is for

    the athletes and volunteers only.

Some of our partners will also

be giving away free samples, or

    selling food.

Be sure to stop by the Inspiration

Station booth at the Expo or the

tent at the race site to make a per-

    sonalized sign to encourage your

    athlete.

1 Arrive Early! A half hour won't beenough time to get everything done. Giveyourself an hour, even more if you can, sothat you won't be rushed.

2 If you did not pick up your packetbeforehand, make sure you leave registra-tion with: Race Number and pins, SwimCap provided by race, bike frame number, and helmet number.

3 You will need to get Body Marked.Make sure you pick up your Timing Chipand Velcro strap that gets worn around theankle. You may choose to pick up your tim-

ing chip after you have racked your bike.

4 After body marking take your bikeand gear with you to the transition area(the big fenced in area with the bike racks)and claim a spot of real estate for yourself. There's nothing worse than arriving withplenty of time to spare, but forgetting torack your bike FIRST, and then ending upwith little or no room to lay out your gear. You can 'rack' your bike by either hook-ing the seat over the top rail of the bikerack or by hooking the handlebars/brakelevers over the top rail. The choice is yours- whichever works better for you. Take alook around to see what others are do-ing, and then follow suit. Once your bikeis racked, you can drop your gear next to

it - there should be time to lay it out neatlylater. You can pump your tires up before-hand, or in the transition area - the choiceis up to you. Please be considerate to-wards your fellow participants and do nothog space in the transition area. Thereshould be enough room for at least 6 bi-cycles on each rack.

5 You need to do something withthat race number. You have to nishthe race with the number on the frontof your body, so you can either use thepins you were given to pin it to the shirtyoull wear during the race, or you canuse a number belt if you have one. Thenumber must be worn during the run.

7 Next, organize your gear next toyour bike. Its a good idea to have a towelon the ground to lie out your stuff. Makesure you have your bike shoes and run-ning shoes laid out in the open with thelaces open so they are easy to get into.Have your helmet either on the ground

near your shoes or on your handlebars, with the strap undone so its easy to puton. A good idea is to have your helmetsitting upside-down with your sunglassesin the helmet. That way, you put on yoursunglasses and then follow that with thehelmet and its hard to forget either. Nextto or underneath your running shoes youmay want to place a hat for the run be-cause the sun can get pretty hot by the endof the race. Make sure you have your wa-ter bottle(s) lled before the race as well.

8 You should be pretty organized bynow so you can use any spare time to fa-miliarize yourself with the ow of trafconce the race starts. Figure out where theswim nishes and where youll have to run

to get your bike. Locate a xed landmark(garbage cans may get moved) or countthe number of bike racks to your bike, sothat you dont get lost looking for yourbike. Its like looking for a needle in a hay-stack if you dont have some idea where tostart. Continued on next page...

8 After the swim, you will enterthe transition at one end and leave atthe other. When you return you reversethings. That is, the bike starts and n-ishes at the same side of the transition

area, and the run goes out where theswim came in.

9It's also a good idea to do a walkor warm-up run of the start of the runcourse and nish. That way you won'tget lost starting the run and you'll havesome good landmarks as you near thenish line. It's always nice to know when

you are nearing the nish line, so if youhave some visual cues you'll be morecomfortable.

10 The best advice for any newtriathlete is to get to the swim start earlyand do a good warm-up in the water. Theswim is often the most daunting part ofa triathlon and open water swimming is

different than pool swimming. When youcan't see the bottom and there are nolane ropes people often freak out a bitand then they have trouble swimming.Factor in any trouble navigating andyou've got a long swim on your hands.Take some time to get comfortable in thewater and with the fact that you can'tsee as well. Practice sighting the buoysso that you won't get lost. The more timeyou spend getting comfortable, the lesstime you'll spend panicking. If you are aweak swimmer or a beginner, please stayto the back of the pack. This not onlykeeps you from getting clobbered, but italso helps those stronger swimmers getout of your way faster. One more pointabout the swim. You may see people atthe race with wetsuits. You dont need tohave a wetsuit to race, so dont worry ifyou dont have one. We will take the wa-ter temperature on race morning and letyou know if wetsuits are legal. Check theUSAT rule in this guide for more info.

1Check your goggles, checkthat the strap and nose bridgeare not going to break duringthe swim, check that the sealshave not perished. If the lens is

    scratched consider a new pair.

2Check your wetsuit for po-tential tears, check the seamsare not frayed or split, if so get itxed. Also look for holes and cuts, these can be glued and stitchedto prevent water entering the suitand making it streamlined.

3Check Your Bike. There is alot to check here so if you don'tknow what to do, get down toyour local bike store. Nothing isworse than athletes arriving atpre race inspection needing a

    new frame or wheel.

4 Check your helmet, theplastic shell needs to be rmly af-xed to the foam and the strapshould not be frayed and needsto t rmly. Check that there areno cracks or dents as these willmost likely not pass in a pre race

    check.

5Check your running shoes.Look to see that they are notworn out of alignment or that themidsole is crushed. Also checkthat the elastic laces are working

properly. Check that they are washed

clean and dry and prepared for the

    race.
