While anti-theft devices are not 100percent effective, we offer the follow-ing tips that may help lower yourrisk:

O Lock your bike. Unlocked bicy-cles are an open invitation for thieves.Whenever you are not riding yourbike, it should be locked, even whenit's in your garage.

O Don't skimp when buying a lock.Most cable locks are easy to cut, sopurchase the best lock you can afford.

O Be sure to lock your bike correct-ly. Make sure that you lock bothwheels and the frame to a post, pole,or bike rack.

O Register your bike with localpolice. The police are able to recoverbikes quickly if they are registered inadvance and have the appropriateinformation like make, model, colorand serial number. You can also reg-ister your bike with the National BikeRegistry, a national database whichhelps recover stolen bikes.

Bicycles are covered under yourhomeowners or renters insurance.However, there is usuallya $250 $500deductible. Yourhomeowners orrenters policyalso provides liabili-ty coverage in the

event of a collision that results ininjury to another party. There are nodeductibles for liability claims. Onceyou purchase a bicycle, keep thereceipt for it and any accessories youadd. Also, take photographs of thebike. Store these documents off thepremises and alert your insuranceprofessional to your new purchase.

If you own an expensive bike, yourinsurance representative might sug-gest that you consider purchasing afloater. This will provide more cover-age than a homeowners or renterspolicy. For instance, in the event ofan accident, a floater covers the costof bike repairs. A floater typicallycosts approximately $9 for every $100of the bike's value, and there are nodeductibles.

Protect your property: If a tornadowatch has been issued, move carsinside a garage or carport to avoiddamage from hail that often accom-panies tornadoes. Keep your carkeys and house keys with you. Iftime permits, move lawn furnitureand yard equipment such as lawn-mowers inside. Otherwise, theycould become damaged or act asdangerous projectiles causing seri-ous injury or damage. You shouldhave an inventory of your posses-sions to help facilitate the claim fil-ing process, should you encounter aloss. This inventory list should bekept off the premises.

Teachers may want to use this articleto demonstrate how the followingtips can increase a safer drivingrecord for younger drivers,emphasizing the fact that safedrivers have lower insurance rates.

sponsored by the AAA Foundationfor Traffic Safety found a staggeringnumber of deaths as a result of roadrage. Subsequent research shows thatin 1997, up to two-thirds of all fatali-ties resulted from aggressive driving.But road rage is not the only hazardon the road.

Driving environments also accountfor a large number of crashes. Thepresence of animals on roadways pre-sents significant hazard. TheUniversity of Alabama CrashAnalysis Reporting Environment lists61 percent of passenger vehicles asbeing involved in animal-relatedcrashes.

Sleepiness can impair the judgmentand ability of any driver. Staying uplate to watch that movie you've beenwaiting for or cramming for thatimportant test can cost you dearly.National Highway Traffic SafetyAdministration statistics reveal that3.2 percent of all highway fatalities in1997 were reported as sleep related,with more being possible since theactual cause of many accidents is notdetermined.

Common sense and respect forother drivers is the key to safedriving. The following rules shouldapply to all drivers:

Turn signals: It is particularly

important when driving to alwaysuse turn signals, even if it is obviouswhat you are doing. Although youmay be in a left turn lane, using yourleft turn signal is simply a good habitto practice to indicate that indeed youare going to turn left.

STOP signs: Perhaps one of themost important traffic signs, and mostfrequently abused, is the STOP sign.The rules are fairly standard: come toa complete stop, then proceed if it isclear. In addition to two-, three-, andfour- way STOP signs, other roadmarkings such as white stop lines andSTOP HERE ON RED signs may beincluded as additional safety precau-tions and as guidance for vehicleswith special maneuvering needs.

Changing lanes: Always indicateyour intentions when moving fromlane to lane by using your turn sig-nals. But also ensure you haveenough room to move into a lane; donot force your way in. Be sure to lookbehind you to see if it is clear tochange lanes. Try to use your mirrorsor peripheral vision as much as possi-ble. The longer your attention isdirected from the road in front of you,the greater your chances of beinginvolved in an accident.

Emergency vehicles: ALWAYS getout of the way of emergency vehicles!Even if it is in a different lane or com-ing from the opposite direction, slowdown and move aside. Also, beaware of other vehicles trying to getout of the way. Avoid jumping backinto your lane and passing otherswho have pulled over to let anemergency vehicle pass. It is onlycourteous to let others get back intothe lane in the same order you allwere in before pulling over.

Always be courteous and tolerantwhile driving! Younger people maymake mistakes from lack of experi-ence, and older people may errbecause of forgetfulness. Sometimesa little patience is all that is requiredto avoid an accident!:

In the next ten years, the insideof your car may be more computerand less metal and mechanics.Business Week reports that automanufacturers may eventuallyoffer annual software upgrades tothose who don't want to buy a newcar. Other new technologies thatare already becoming availableinclude adaptive cruise control,which uses radar to measure thespeed of the vehicle ahead of you,automatically slowing your car, ifnecessary, until you have theopportunity to pass. With adap-tive, or intelligent cruise control,you can safely make your waythrough highway traffic withoutever using the brake or accelerator.A device that automatically dials911 after a crash is currently undertesting by the National HighwayTraffic Safety Administration. Thesystem, which uses cellular tele-phone technology, may be widelyavailable within five years. Rear-view mirrors might also go the wayof the dinosaur, replaced by ascreen that displays views collectedby chips placed around the car.

New graduates with computerskills, regardless of their major, con-tinue to be in demand. But demandis highest for graduates with

degrees in computer and informa-tion sciences, engineering, businessmanagement and the health field.Employers also indicated an interestin applicants with "real world"work, international experience, andforeign language skills. Accordingto the survey, the Southwest shouldoffer the best job prospects for newgraduates this year.

Each group will be given two paper plates with an insuranceterm written on the paper plate. The teacher will toss thepaper plate with the definition on it. After the group whocatches the toss reads the definition and determines that thedefinition does not match the term they have been given, thegroup then tosses the insurance Frisbee to another group. Thefirst group to match their two terms with the correct definitionmust raise their hand. At that point, all activity must stop andthe group reads their terms and definitions to the class. Ifthey are correct, the remainder of the class may continue thegame until all terms and definitions are matched correctly. [17

Being involved in an accidentnaturally leaves you feelingconfused, shaken, and possibly

even angry or scared. If you are notinjured yourself, there are somethings you should do at the scene of aserious accident to help get your claimprocessed quickly and accurately.

STEP 1 Stop your car in as safe aplace as possible. Turn off the igni-tion. Get out carefully and determineif anyone is injured. You mayadminister first aid if needed, butusually you shouldn't try to move aninjured person.

STEP 2 Call the police (911 in mostplaces) immediately. Be sure to tellthem about any injuries. The policewill inform the nearest medical unit.

STEP 3 If possible, move your car toa safer place to prevent additionalaccidents and further damage to yourvehicle. If your car cannot be moved,turn on hazard lights, and ask theinvestigating officers to help you setup flares until the car can be towed.

STEP 4 If another car was involved,record the car's year, make, modeland license plate number. Get thedriver's name, address,license number and thename of his/her insurancecompany. If the driverdoes not own the car,get the name of theca"r'S owner. Also,get the names andaddresses of anypassengers in the car,or other witnesses.

STEP 5 Write down the names andbadge numbers of police and otheremergency personnel at the scene.Ask the investigating officer how toobtain a copy of the police report foryour claim.

STEP 6 If you think the other driverwas under the influence of alcohol ordrugs, insist on a breath test for youand the other driver.

STEP 7 Cooperate with the policeand other people involved, but don'tapologize for or acknowledge theaccident in any way. You may berequired to say what coverages youhave, but don't say how much insur-ance you carry.(continued on pg. 8)

Nine ways to save money on yourauto insurance:

1. Comparison Shop Prices for thesame coverage can vary by hun-dreds of dollars from company tocompany, so it pays to shoparound. Surf the net, ask yourfriends or call your state insur-ance department for ideas aboutcompanies and agents to contact.You should get at least three dif-ferent quotes. But don't shopprice alone. The insurer youselect should offer both fair pricesand excellent services. Qualitypersonal service may cost a bitmore, but provides added conve-niences, so talk to a number ofinsurers to get a feeling for thequality of their service. Ask themwhat they would do to loweryour costs. Check the financialratings of the companies withA.M. Best or Standard and Poor's.

2. Ask for Higher DeductiblesDeductibles represent the amountof money you pay before youmake a claim. By requestinghigher deductibles on collisionand comprehensive coverage, youcan lower your costs substantially.For example, increasing yourdeductible from $200 to $500could reduce your collision andcomprehensive cost by 15-30 per-cent.

3. Drop Collision and/orComprehensive Coverages onOlder Cars It may not be costeffective to have collision or

comprehensive coverages on carsworth less than $1,000 becauseany claim you make would notsubstantially exceed annual costand deductible amounts. Autodealers and banks can tell you theworth of your car.

4. Buy a Low Profile Car Beforeyou buy a new or used car, checkinto insurance costs. Cars that areexpensive to repair, or that arefavorite targets for thieves, havemuch higher costs.

5. Take Advantage of Low MileageDiscounts Some companies offerdiscounts to motorists who drivefewer than a predeterminednumber of miles a year.

6. Consider Insurance Cost WhenMaking a Move Costs tend to belowest in rural communities andhighest in cities where there ismore traffic congestion.

7. Find Out About Automatic SeatBelt or Airbag Discounts Youmay be able to take advantage ofdiscounts on some coverages ifyou have automatic seat beltsand/or airbags.

8. Ask About Anti-Lock BrakesAnti -lock brakes improve steeringcontrol and stability when a car isbrought to a stop, thus reducingaccidents. Some states, includingFlorida, New Jersey and NewYork, require insurers to give dis-counts_for cars equipped with.thebrakes and some insurers have anationwide discount in place.

9. Inquire About Other DiscountsSome insurers offer discounts forthings like no accidents in threeyears, drivers over 50 years ofage, driver training courses,anti-theft devices, good gradesfor students and having morethan one car insured with thatcompany.

There is no foolproof way tosafeguard against car theft.But many no-cost deterrents

exist for protecting your vehicle. Athief's greatest enemy is time. Themore difficult your car is to steal,the longer it takes to be stolen. Thelonger it takes, the more likely thethief will move on to an easier target.Here are nine ways to frustrate carthieves:

1. Park with the wheels turnedtoward the curb. Turn them evenwhen parking in driveways andparking lots. This makes yourvehicle difficult to tow.

2. Park in well lighted areas.More than 50 percent of vehicle theftsoccur at night.

3. Use your garage and lockboth the vehicle and the garage.

4. Keep your vehicleregistration in your purse or walletand file your title at home. If a thiefhas these two documents, your carwill be easier to sell.

5. Park in attended lots.Thieves don't like witnesses.

6. Activate anti-theft devicesyour car is equipped with.

7. Close all windows, lock alldoors and take the keys with you.One out of four stolen cars has itskeys inside.

8. Always turn off your engineand take your keys with you during"quick stops" at convenience stores,gas stations, ATMs, dry cleaners, etc.

Theodore Sapeta

TheodoreSapeta, a busi-ness teacher atJohn F. KennedyHigh School inBellmore, NewYork, was select-ed as the recipi-ent of the JamesL. OsborneInsurance

Educator of the Year Award. Sapetareceived an all-expense-paid trip fortwo to San Antonio, TX where heaccepted this honor on September20th at the opening session of theannual convention of the NationalAssociation of Mutual InsuranceCompanies (NAMIC), of which IEF isan affiliate. Sapeta and John F.Kennedy High School received cashawards in conjunction with thisaward. Sapeta will also serve on thecommittee that selects the InsuranceEducator of the Year for the year2000. The award bears the name ofJames L. Osborne, who was IEF'sfounder.

Sapeta's entry into the competitionincluded teaching strategies, lessonplans, and student activities createdto teach high school students the fun-damentals of insurance as well ashow insurance is relevant to theirlives now and in the future. Sapetaattended the Insurance EducationInstitute for High School Teachers atThe College of Insurance in NewYork City in the summer of 1997.Attendance at one of the IEF insti-tutes is a prerequisite for entry intothis competition.

Materials for the 2000 competitionwill be coming to institute graduatesthis spring!

John C. Et ling Scholarship Recipients

ohn C. Et ling was the President and CEO of General Reinsurance inStamford, Connecticut. He passed way in 1997. Later that year, IEF beganworking with Gen Re to establish a program to honor the memory of John

and to raise new funds for IEF. Sporting clays was a passion of John's and formany years he organized these events around the country to raise money forphilanthropic causes. Wanting to continue that tradition in John's memory,friends created the John C. Et ling Scholarship Awards and designated thefunds for educational programs for IEF.

This past summer, IEF awarded a John C. Et ling Scholarship Award to oneteacher in each of the seven Insurance Education Institutes for High SchoolTeachers. The cash prizes were awarded for the teacher achieving the highestdegree of excellence in the course. The high schools where these teachersteach also received cash prizes. The winners were: Drake University:Marcella Peach, Centennial High School, Circle Pines, MN; Illinois StateUniversity: Ruth L. Kansas hassigned into lawa new bill thatprovides forthe revocationof the driver'slicense of anyyoung person whois suspended from school for possession of weapons ordrugs.

The new law also covers suspension for any behaviorthat could cause serious injury to others. The KansasDivision of Vehicles will not issue a new license for oneyear. If the student already has a suspended license,the one-year revocation will be added to the earliersuspension.

Your Driving CostsHow much does it cost to drive?

AAA's annual Your Driving Costs brochure lists national per-milecosts and the composite national average for three sizes of cars, andgives average per-mile costs for a sport utility vehicle and mini-van.The brochure also takes you through steps to figure your own drivingcosts. Costs are broken down into two categories operating costs and own-ership costs.

Operating costs include gas, oil, maintenance, and tire expenditures.Ownership costs include taxes, depreciation, finance charges, registration,

insurance and license fees. AAA has published Your Driving Costs since1950. That year, driving a car 10,000 miles annually cost 9 cents a mile, andgasoline sold for 27 cents per gallon. For your free copy of this brochure, stopby your local AAA office. 1.7

What To Do After An AccidentSTEP 8 If the other person takesresponsibility for the accident, do notaccept any money he or she mayoffer you. By accepting money, youmay give up your right to file a claimagainst the other driver, even if thedamages turn out to be more exten-sive than you first thought.

STEP 9 Never agree to forget aboutan accident, even if there appears tobe no damage. You may find outlater that there were actually hiddendamages or injuries. You may evenfind out the other person has filed alawsuit against you.

Make notes aboutinjuries or statements from anyonewho says they are not hurt. Noteany pre-existing damage on othercars involved.

STEP 11 If a camera is available,take pictures showing the damage,position of cars skid marks, and any-thing else documenting what hap-pened. Make copies of all the pic-tures.

STEP 12 Report the accident to yourinsurance agent or company.

into the car with a teenage

driver, the greater the risk ofan

accident that will kill the driv-

er, a study shows.

"I think we can safely say that the more

passengers there are, the higher are the --

death rates for 16- and 17-year-old drivers,"

says Li-Hui Chen, who headed a research

team at Johns Hopkins School of Public

Health. "When a I 6- or 17- year-old is carry-

ing three or more passengers,

the death rate is three times

greater than ifthey are carry-

ing no passengers."

lates that the driver may be

distracted by the passengers

"talking, or they might be encouraged by

the passengers to perform risky behaviors,

such as running red lights."

The risk ofdeath increases for drivers

with passengers regardless ofthe time of

day or the sex ofthe driver, although males

risk is greater.

The study finds that, compared with

drivers ofthe same age with no passengers,

the relative risk ofdriver death per 10 mil-

lion trips was 39% higher for 16-year-old

drivers with one passenger, 86% higher for

those with two passengers and 282% high-

er for those with three or more passengers.

The study analyzed data from three federal

fatality and transportation reports.

Having slightly older passengers was no

protection: Teen drivers were still more apt

to die with passengers who were in their

20s than when they were driving alone.

help explain and "demystify" the subject of insurance. To that end, you will see changes in this newsletter that respond to suggestions readers

frequency of communication and more articles to consider.

This redesigned newsletter will be the first in our effort to meet these needs. In addition to the focus on material you can reproduce, weare

budgeting for three newsletters in 2001. We want to provide timely information that you can integrate into your curriculum, and we

want to give it to you on a more frequent schedule.

Another initiative for IEF will be the provision of resources such as lesson plans on our web site. We are in the process of purchasingthe

equipment needed to translate our videos and text material to electronic format. Once there, it becomes available to you and your

colleagues at the touch ofa keyboard. We are also committed to getting the best of our lesson plans on line to provide you with fresh sources

of teaching material each year.

This year's recipients ofthe

John C. Et ling Scholarship

Awards were announced at the

respective graduation cere-

monies ofthe Insurance Education

Institutes for High School Teachers. The

Insurance Education Foundation and

General Reinsurance of Stamford,

Connecticut presented these awards in

honor ofJohn C. Et ling. Mr. Et ling, who

passed away in 1997, was the President and

CEO of General Reinsurance. He believed

in and supported the mission of IEF and was

known to his colleagues as a champion of

insurance education.

Monetary awards were given to the

teacher in each ofthe five insurance insti-

tutes who demonstrated the highest degree

of excellence in the course. A monetary

award was also sent to each recipient's high

school for the purchase of materials and/or

equipment for his/her department.

Katherine Hoyne, a teacher at William H.Taft High School in Chicago, Illinois, receivesthe John C. of 1 999, the Insurance Education

Foundation hired William J. Howell, CLU,

ChFC, CAE as CEO. Bill served on the

Professionals in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania

for I 9 years, most recently as Vice

President, Member Services. Prior to

joining the Society's staff, he was an agent

for Connecticut Mutual Life.

Volunteers help protectchildren from natural disasters

he Insurance Education

Foundation and the Institute

for Business and Home Safety

(IBHS) recently teamed up to

tackle a new program called "Protecting

Our Kids from Disasters." IBHS has organ-

ized this campaign to provide information-

al assistance and to encourage parents,

friends, businesses and communities to

make child care centers in their area safer

from disasters. Non-structural retrofits

(modifications to equipment, supplies and

\*-

furniture in and around the building) help

improve overall safety and avoid minor

mishaps as well as major catastrophes.

Volunteers from IEF's National Advisory

Council of Secondary Teachers and IEF staff

spent a Saturday morning securing cabi-

nets, installing safety latches and putting

plastic sleeves over exposed light bulbs at a

downtown Indianapolis day care center.

While the program seeks to provide pro-

tection during a natural hazard event

(earthquake or tornado), the work done in

this retrofit will also enhance the safety of

the center during operations on a day-to-

day basis.

This summer the Insurance

Education Foundation (IEF)

sponsored the thirteenth

annual Insurance Education

Institutes for High School Teachers. These

institutes are open to high school teachers

who teach insurance as a specific course or

as part of another subject. The purpose

of these two-week programs is to enable

teachers to become more effective in

teaching insurance by providing the tools

they need for understanding all forms of

insurance, with an emphasis on the rele-

vance to high school students and their

families. Along with increased knowledge,

teachers return to their classrooms with

videotapes, lesson plans, and other class-

room materials to help them with their

instruction.

Scholarships cover the cost ofon-

campus room and board and classroom

materials. Three hours ofgraduate credit

are also provided at no cost to teachers

One hundred and thirty-seven teachers

attended the institutes held this summer

at five universities around the country.

Nearly 1,900 have attended throughout

the history ofthe program. Those

universities who conducted the institutes

this year are Drake University in Des

Moines, Iowa; The College of Insurance

in New York City; The University of

California, Sacramento (held on the

campus of The University of San

Francisco); Illinois State University in

Normal; and Florida State University in

Tallahassee.

Secondary Teachers (NACST) met with

the Insurance Education Foundation's

Chairman ofthe Board, Robert Bischoff,

collectively a barometer for the effective-

ness of IEF's insurance programs in the

college in the fall. I plan to live in a dorm. Will my personal

belongings be covered by my parents' homeowner's

insurance policy? Do my parents need to inform my

insurance company that I'm moving to a dorm?"

&NSW-0E122A parent's homeowner's policy is frequently extended to cover any student insured

by the policy who is temporarily living away from home for the purpose of attending a

school, college or university. The coverage would apply to property the student brought

to school from home, property acquired at school that will return home with the student,

and property acquired at school that will not return home with the student. There is

normally a sub-limit, or maximum, (example $2,500) that will be covered on such proper-

ty. Some insurers may not explicitly state that they cover students' property, but do and

others may exclude it altogether unless it is specifically asked for as an extended coverage.

Insurance policies may not explicitly require that you advise your insurance company

when a student leaves home. However, it is a good idea to let your agent or broker know.

It is always best to look for answers in the specific policy that your parents have pur-

chased, preferably with the advice ofa qualified insurance professional.

ager's dream and every par-

ent's nightmare. If your child is

getting ready to drive, whether it's in a fami-

ly car or one of his or her own, these point-

ers can lead you to the safest vehicle.

MNIAU 40O MOMSteer clear of sports cars and other

vehicles with a performance

cars and vehicles

with performance

features such as

turbocharging can

encourage speeding.

Avoid sport utility vehicles (SUVA

SU Vs especially the smaller ones

pose a rollover risk because oftheir higher

centers ofgravity. Less-experienced drivers

may be more likely to use abrupt steering

motions, which can cause rollovers. This

can happen when teens are fooling around,

showing offin front of

friends or simply

over-correcting a

turn. Under these

circumstances, a

more stable vehicle would, at worst, skid or

spin out.

G Stay away from small vehicles. Because

oftheir size and weight, small cars offer

significantly less protection in crashes.

© Avoid older vehicles. Most of today's

cars offer better crash protection than

those made six to 10 years ago. Improved

crush zones, better-designed safety cages,

antilock brakes and air bags are among

the new safety features that older vehicles

may lack.

MI1AU 1001( I7020 Find a vehicle with a sedate image. Cars

with fun, sporty, speedy images can encour-

age reckless driving and speeding. A basic

model with a more staid image (a family

sedan, for example) can reduce the chance

that your teen-ager will be in a speed-

related crash.

3 Choose a mid-size or full -size vehicle.

"When it comes to safety, the bigger the

better," says Kim Hazelbaker, senior vice

president ofthe Highway Loss Data

Institute. However, you don't need to put

your teen-ager in the largest

vehicle you can find.

Many mid -and

full-size vehicles

offer excellent crash

protection.

Pick a vehicle with air bags. Many

vehicles made in the 1990s have air bags,

although many manufacturers added them

to their passenger cars before they included

them in their trucks. To determine ifa vehi-

cle is equipped with air bags, check the

owner's manual. Many air bag-equipped

models but not all have markings like

these on the steering wheel or passenger-

side dashboard panel: SRS, SIR or SRS/Air

Bag. (Beginning with the 1998 model year,

dual air bags for driver and front-seat

passenger are required in all new cars.

This federal requirement also applies to all

new light trucks, vans and utility vehicles

beginning with the 1999 model year.)

Check the safety ratings and choose a

vehicle with good crash protection. Safety

ratings are available on several Web sites.

Look into the Insurance Institute for

Highway Safety (IIHS) site, www.high-

waysafety.org; the U.S. Department of

Transportation's site, www.nhsa.dot.gov;

and the USAA Educational Foundation's

site, www.usaaedfoundation.org.

C) Choose a newer vehicle. Late-model

vehicles offer better safety equipment.

For example, according to the Insurance

Information Institute andlIHS, a newer

midsize car with air bags is a better choice

than an older, larger vehicle without

them.

Also, be sure your teen knows that air

bags are designed to work in conjunction

with safety belts. Insist that your teen

always wears his or her seat belt and that

all passengers wear them as well.

Look for antilock brakes. Antilock brak-

ing systems, also known as ABS, are stan-

dard in many late-model vehicles. ABS

helps the driver maintain control during

hard stops. Antilock brakes also allow

shorter stops on slippery pavement. With

ABS, you should not pump the brakes the

system does it for you. If you learned to

drive with old-fashioned brakes, you proba-

bly learned to pump the brakes and steer

into a skid. If your vehicle has ABS, unlearn

these habits and do the opposite: Brake

firmly and steer out ofa skid.
