Expert Session 1

The first session on „Soft Skill Development Influencing

Behavioural Change‟ was taken by Ms Reena Chadha,

Safeguard Specialist, Punjab Tourism. Ms Chadha

described India as a population superpower with low

share in industrial growth, growing unemployment,

growing environmental deterioration, health threats,

with political and global risks etc. According to her, the

panacea for Indian problems lies in „Social

Entrepreneurship‟. She suggested that key problems have to be identified at grass root level and

solutions for the same should be sought for which the understanding of the impact of culture

capital and grass root innovation assumes paramount importance. She also warned the youth

against the myths about social entrepreneurship and shared the challenges. She involved youth

in discussing the local problems and discussed likely solutions. Ms. Chadha also presented a

few case studies of the success of social entrepreneurship like Water Hyacinth Craft

Development: A Case study on the potential and need of Skill development in household

tourism in Himachal Pradesh and Punjab.

Expert Session II

The second session on „An overview of Social

Entrepreneurship and Skilling - Thrust on Skilling India

Initiatives‟ was taken by Mr. Prakash Bharadwaj, State

Bureau Chief, Dainik Jagaran. Mr. Bharadwaj started by

asking questions about the state of affairs of Himachal

Pradesh and its local area. By citing a case of H. P. State

Cooperative Bank‟s recent recruitment drive wherein as

many as one lakh seventy two thousand people applied

for just 250 clerical posts that too on contract basis, he drew attention of the audience to the fact

that how for a few posts of peon in H.P. High court thousands of highly qualified unemployed

youth applied. He appealed to the youth not to be in the queue of employment seeker but be

among the employment givers. He spoke about various provisions and opportunities for

different sections of the society in programmes like Skill India, Startup India, Standup India etc.

Mr. Bharadwaj elaborated the procedural details for seeking loans from banks for starting a new

business under these programmes. He informed that in 2015 about one crore sixty two lakh

Page 6: Report Youth Seminar Shimla Himachal Pradesh (7- 8 April 2016) · Report Youth Seminar Shimla, Himachal Pradesh Date: 7-8 April, 2016 Venue: Govt. Post Graduate College, Seema (Rohru),

addition to harness the potential to attract more people to the area and start a venture based on

their demands. The seminar was opened for discussion and students asked a number of

questions on the topic. The participants were enlightened with valuable inputs based on the

local area and tourism potential like religious tourism, household tourism adventure camping

and sports and medicinal and aromatic plants of local area and the potential in ayurvedic and

pharmaceutical sector.

This session was followed by a lunch break. Post lunch, the participants were briefed on the

group activity on „Make things happen – Create Start-ups for Change‟. They were given time to

pen down their ideas creatively on the topic in the form of poster or role play.

Group Activity and Presentations

In the group activity on Building your own enterprise, the students were divided into groups of

10-12 people and were given 5 startup conditions, based on which they had to create their own

start up enterprises. All the teams were asked to present their projects on the next day.

Below are the descriptions of the ideas that each group came up with:

Group I: The enterprise proposed to provide shelter to

stray cows, and preparing and venturing in the products

like milk, curd, ghee, and manure and cow urine. The

group also highlighted the place of cow in Hindu religion

and the market potential of dairy products. The group

presented how this initiative will lessen road accidents and

injury to the cattle by removing them from roads and

putting them in shelter.

Group II: This group proposed to start a business on organic farming. The group members

through a skit highlighted the problem of declining fertility of soil and apple production in

Shimla hill due to indiscriminate use of the fertilizer and need to resort to the cow dung based

organic farming along with the additional income from the dairy products.

Group III: The proposed plan was to encourage use of

Green manure and vermi-composting for betters results in

apple orchards. In a skit presentation, one of the friends of

a farmer‟s son informs about the benefits of green manure

and vermicomposting for quality apple production in

Himachal Pradesh. The vermi-compost can be prepared at

home and are in great demand in the market amongst the

horticulturists. The manure available in the market is of

low quality and chemical fertilizers are detrimental to the health and environment. Additional

Page 7: Report Youth Seminar Shimla Himachal Pradesh (7- 8 April 2016) · Report Youth Seminar Shimla, Himachal Pradesh Date: 7-8 April, 2016 Venue: Govt. Post Graduate College, Seema (Rohru),

income can be fetched through the marketing of dairy products if farmer start this business at

commercial scale.

Group IV: This group thoughtfully tried to start a business

of household tourism with a proposal to serve traditional

food to the tourist. The renovation and maintenance of

traditional houses for home stay, serving local foods, wild

vegetables in traditional crockery, fabric, handloom, and

life styles were their strength, besides use of IT for

marketing was also plus point of their plan.

Group V: This group aimed at starting an NGO for increasing the attendance and admission at

local primary schools to do away with the problem of child labour in the Rohru sub-division.

Group VI: Their idea was based on the conservation of Pahari (Hilly) culture and tradition, fibre

& fabric, Handloom (Shawl, Jacket, scarf caps, coats etc.) and their display in the traditional

cafeteria to attract tourist. Local dialects, music, songs, dances folklores etc. were also to be

documented, recorded and conserved.

Group VII: The proposed plan was based on women

empowerment and converting the free time of woman in

winters into a profit making enterprise based on handloom

industry by forming self-help group. The activities like

knitting sweaters, socks, weaving shawls, blankets from

the wool of sheep and goats reared by local residents and

marketing of these products in a commercial way.

Group VIII: This was based on Dairy based quality products with technological interventions

including establishment of milk chilling plant for collecting milk from local residents and cold

storage for transportation. They planned to form a cooperative society similar to AMUL.

Group IX: They presented on their startup model “NIHAAR”. They targeted mainly women in

rural areas who are housewives. Through their presentation they explained that they will

empower women by providing them training in local food products.

Group X: This project aimed at providing a clear understanding of what diversity is and how it

provides livelihood services to different communities. Since Shimla has many resources which

has been unutilized and their culture has not been reflected, various livelihood skills so that

they can enhance their status. The main aim of their startup was to provide services to the rural

areas of Shimla by which the rural people can be self-sufficient and thereafter they can raise

their own socio economic lifestyle.
