1. About the Workshop Technology providers and SMEs are important stakeholders of the project “Capacity building and
strengthening of biomass technology support system”. Technology providers are very important in
terms of having understanding and insight about design, types and fabrication of biomass gasifiers at
local level. It is very important to have both stakeholders (technology providers and SMEs) at same
page. First Training workshop to make both the stakeholders vigilant about the design and fabrication
of biomass gasifier was organized in University of Agriculture, Faisalabad. Furthermore practical
demonstration of biomass gasifier was a part of training workshop. Said training workshop attracted a
total of 102 people including technology providers, people from SMEs, students inclined to adopt the
renewable energy sector as career, young entrepreneurs and researchers. Detailed list of participants is
annexed as –Annex1
2. Objectives of the Workshop To give an insight about the design, installation and fabrication of biomass gasifier.
To train technical experts of technology providers and SMEs about technical aspects of biomass
gasifier.
Practical demonstration of biomass gasifier.
3. Content of Workshop Overall content of the workshop was the power point presentations about the design and fabrication of
workshop and a practical demonstration about operation of biomass gasifier.
4. Methodology Trainers/ resource persons gave a detailed presentation about biomass, types of biomass, pre-
processing of biomass, properties of biomass used for biomass gasification, biomass gasifiers, types of
biomass gasifiers, design and fabrication of biomass gasifier. A detailed demonstration of updraft and
downdraft biomass gasifier was given to all participants. After the power point presentation and
practical demonstration trainers allowed participants to ask questions. Every session was followed by a
comprehensive discussion with participants.
5. Resource Persons Engineer Iftikhar Ahmed Raja and Dr. Manzoor Ahemd Khan were the resource persons.
6. Participants There were 102 participants from different fields of life i.e. experts from technology providers, young
entrepreneurs, academicians and students.
7. About the Organizers The workshop was organized by “Capacity Building and Strengthening of Biomass gasification
Technology Support System Project’s team. Said project is being executed by Centre of Advanced
Studies in Energy, National University of Sciences and Technology, Islamabad. The project is resourced
by United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and Global Environmental Facility
(GEF). Silent features of project are:
Capacity building and strengthening of small and medium enterprises to adopt the BGTs to fulfill
energy requirements
Strengthening the coordination between financial institutes, educational institutes, technology
providers and SMEs to establish renewable energy sources especially BGTs
Strengthening the research and development facilities of educational institutes and technology
providers
Training of SMEs and technology providers about installation of biomass gasifiers
Encouraging and strengthening local technology providers to fabricate biomass gasifiers
Sensible use of biomass for sustainable and uninterrupted electric supply
Capacity building of SMEs about environmental implications of use of biomass in conventional
ways
7.1. Welcome Address Dr. Ehsan Ali, Principal Investigator On behalf of Centre of Advance Studies in Energy, I warmly welcome all the participants who travelled
all the way from different cities. This training workshop will comprise of four working sessions, which
will be about biomass, properties, drying, pellets, briquettes, biomass gasification, instrumentation,
cleaning and cooling, applications, operation, maintenance, operational problems and solutions, safety
and costs of biomass gasifier as well as energy produced by biomass gasification process. The workshop
will have an interactive environment and all the participants will be encouraged to participate. Practical
demonstration of biomass gasifier will be given and we are optimistic that all the technology providers
will try to replicate the design of existing biomass gasifier.
Let me introduce to the trainers of today’s training workshop, Engineer Iftikhar Ahmed Raja and Dr.
Manzoor Ahmed will be trainers of today’s workshop. Once again I am obliged for your participation in
this training workshop.
7.2. Working Session 1 Engineer Iftikhar Ahmed Raja, Energy and Environment Consultant
First working session was about introduction of biomass, properties of biomass, drying of biomass,
pallets and briquettes of biomass. Basics of every topic were told to the participants and details were
elaborated. Complete presentation is annexed as –Annex 2.
7.3. Working Session 2 Dr. Manzoor Ahmed, Chairman, Department of Farm Machinery and Power, University of Agriculture,
Faisalabad
Gasification is basically a thermochemical process which converts biomass materials into gaseous
component. The result of gasification is the producer gas (synthesis gas), containing carbon monoxide,
carbon dioxide, methane, hydrogen, and some other inert gases.
Gasification is the most efficient process for utilizing biomass as energy. A syngas with less heating
contents have been produced from simple gasification. In the process of gasification solid organic
feedstock converted into mixture of gases, in oxygen deficit environment and at high temperature. This
mixture of gases is called producer or synthesis gas. Gasification process produced different products
like solid ashes, partially oxidised material like soot, tars and syn/producer gas. The main flammable
components of the resulting syn gas are carbon mono oxide (CO) and hydrocarbons.
We have designed a biomass gasifier which has a capacity of 16 KWh. That was solely to run the tube
wells and can fulfil the requirements of a common farmer. I will be happy if our design will be up scaled
and utilized for future endeavours. Detailed presentation is annexed as – Annex 3.
7.4. Practical Demonstration Practical demonstration of updraft and downdraft biomass gasifier was given in workshop of
Department of Farm Machinery and Power, University of Agriculture, Faisalabad. Following procedure
was adopted for demonstration;
Both gasifiers were filled with feed stock (one with cob residue and one with rice husk)
Flame was made with natural gas
Flame was inserted to ignite the biomass present within the biomass gasifiers in presence of all
participants
Biomass was allowed to combust in combustion chamber
Gas outlet was checked whether producer gas is coming outside or not by igniting a match stick
near outlet
All the participants were told about possible hazards and troubleshooting
7.5. Working Session 3 Engineer Iftikhar Ahmed Raja, Energy and Environment Consultant
Third session of the training workshop was about Operation, Maintenance, Operational Problems and
Solutions, Safety and Costs of biomass gasifier. Complete operation and maintenance tools were
elaborated as per guidelines present in BGT manual. Operational problems and solutions were keenly
demonstrated in presentation. Safety measures and cost of biomass gasifier was comprehensively
elobrated by the trainer. Complete presentation is annexed as – Annex 2.
Concluding Session Concluding session of training workshop was a ceremony, which was chaired by Professor Dr. Mahmood
Ahmed, Dean, Faculty of Pharmacy & Alternative Medicine, The Islamia University Bahwalpur.
Selected participants from industry, academia, global environment facility (GEF) and ministry of climate
change gave their feedback on workshop and appreciated the initiative to cope the energy challenges in
Pakistan.
Dr. Mahmood Ahmed said “I welcome Dr. Ehsan Ali, Iftikhar Ahmed Raja other team members from
Islamabad, Dr. Manzoor Ahmad and his team from Faisalabad and participants from other districts of
Southern Punjab to the Islamia University of Bahawalpur”.
He added, “It provides me great comfort to know that people sitting in Islamabad plan and implement
projects for rural and remote areas like Southern Punjab. The GEF funded project, “Promoting
sustainable energy through biomass in Pakistan” is indeed a need of the day. And NUST no doubt is the
best implementing partner that UNIDO could have for “Capacity Building and Strengthening of Biomass
Gasification Technology Support Systems”.
I am pleased to know that Pakistan already has experts in this emerging field such as Dr. Manzoor
Ahmed and Engineer Iftikhar Ahmed Raja. I have been told that the gasifiers being used for
demonstration here have been designed by the Faisalabad Agriculture University, which is very
encouraging.
This is time when we should seriously be looking towards shifting from traditional energy sources to
renewable technologies. Biomass is abundantly available and we should make maximum use of it to
overcome the current energy crisis.
The Islamia University of Bahawalpur actively participates in any activities of adopting to the renewable
sources of energy. I encourage all the participants who are going to be sensitized, oriented and trained
in the use of gasifiers for generating energy through use of biomass, to adopt this technology as much as
possible”.
