Working with people who truly feel like family. Knowing that If I ever need anything they will be there to help.

One that supports the needs of those with family responsibilities, whether that is spouse and children, or the needs of parents/grandparents.

Not being in the position of having to prioritize work over family

It is a place that is understanding of what work life and family life balance means, and a place that is willing to accommodate for unexpected events that may arise, like if a child is sick. It also means that the workplace is encouraging of its employees to take time off to spend with their families so that work does not dominate everything and there is a good balance between family time and work time.

Giving employees the ability (within reason) to leave work to attend family functions and help family members with day to day tasks

Flexible work hours, ability to bring kids to office when school is out early

A "family friendly workplace" means that if I need to bring my kid to work or need to leave work for family reasons, I should be able to without worrying about keeping my job. Life happens and things come up that dictate what needs to happen in my life. I realize that I need a job to take care of my family, but also need to make sure that my family comes first.

We need clearly defined paid time off for volunteering and clearly defined maternity and paternity paid leave and optional leave options

I don't agree with PTO for volunteer work--then it wouldn't be volunteer work.

Management is very understanding and flexible about work schedules, encouraging us to take care of things if family issues arise. I don't think that my employer needs to be responsible for child care, group activities, providing discounts, etc.

I would say that most of these items don't apply to the demographic of our firm. Most of us are older with older kids. A good portion of us have kids that are out of high school and some that are out of the house completely. I would say that the management already do what they can to make it feasible for us to leave whenever needed for important family events. A compressed work week might be nice in the winter time, but I don't see it being practical for the surveying department in the summer time. Giving certain employees the option of working from home part time might be nice, but I can say with certainty that would get abused by several employees and cost the company in the long run.
