Discussion held on Wednesday, March 27th 2013 in English Learning

Strategy class. And member of group 3 are:

The topic that have beenpresentedwas “Language Learning Approach and

Methodology”.This presentation hasbeen reportedfrom several aspects,

namelyterms of contentpresentation (the main of material), technical

presentation,presentationsituation, and frequently asked questionsas well asa

discussion ofthe material presentedin the presentation.

1.1 The Main of Material

The material that have beenpresentedin this presentation was about

“Language Learning Approach and Methodology”. The contents ofthe material is

divided into 6 method, there are direct method, method restrictions, intensive

method, audio-visual method, linguistic method, and integral approach.

This material explained that Learning Strategy is a teacher of learning

activities undertaken with the aim of the learning process that takes place in the

classroom can achieve (goals) to effectively and efficiently. Learning strategy is

still conceptual, necessary for the implementation of certain teaching methods.The

approachis a set ofassumptions regardingthe nature

oflanguageandlanguagelearning.Learningapproachis away ofmanaging

thelearning activitiesandbehavior ofstudents, in order they can doing learning

task, so they can get the optimal result from their learning.

Approach and methodology of language learning can be divided into two

form : Formal Approach and Functional Approach. Functional Approach will

appear language learning method, such as Direct Method, Method Restrictions,

Intensive methode, Audio-Visual Method, Linguistics Method, and Integral

Approach.

"Direct Method is a method of teaching a foreign language, especially a

modern language through conversation, discussion and reading in the language

itself without use of the pupil's language, without translation and without the

study of formal grammar. The words are first taught by pointing to object or

picture or by performing action." The general goal of the Direct Method is to

provide learners with a practically useful knowledge of language.

Method Restriction are all method that need to be restriction in languge

learning. Method Restriction is langage teaching by using Method which directly

studied to student which be adapted with the condition of the student.

Intensive method is a strategy of intensive study how the students improve

their language. Intensive methods are very supportive and help the student in the

language tutorials.

Audio lingual strategy is an approach to language learning that based on

behaviouris ideology in our daily.

Linguistics method is will enable you to explore language on a sound

theoretical basis and to apply these linguistic skills in foreign language teaching.

Integral approach is reveals the interior side of life,sees developmental

stages,and recognizes and respects the individual and collective domains.

In this presentation, our team use Microsoft Power Point as our media of

presentation. In the Power Point we just type a general material of our

presentation. And then one by one of our member tell about the materials. We

read the text on the Power Point and then explain it with our own words. So, the

audience can easy to understand what we mean.

1.3 The Situation of Presentation

In this presentation, we can say that the condition in the class was quite

conducive. Unfortunately, sometimes, when presenters tell about the materials,

there are participants who ignore and not focus, that is very disturbing the

presenter, because presenters feel less attention. So, it is very distraction in telling

the materials. But, in general, we succesful handle the audience to be respect and

focus in our presentation.

The audience feel enthusiastic when presenters give apportunity to them,

to asked Question. We discuss about their question. In this activity can build

communication between the presenters and the audience. And at the end of our

presentation, we give some question to them. This question was giventocheck

iftheyfocusto our presentation or not, whetherthey understandor notabout

thematerials.

1.4 Asked Question and Discussion

Related with our materials, there are some questions which asked by

participant. The Question are:

1. From Neng Ariyanti:

If we as a teacher, what is the best method which can be used in language

learning?

Our team give explanation : we cannot say which one is the best

method or which one is useless. But, all of the method is important

to use in teaching language learning, because those are part of the

strategy. As a teacher we should choose which one method which

suitable with our material and suitable with the condition of our

student. All of method can be used by the teacher. Just depent on

our needed. For example : if we should teach “Listening”, we

should use Audio-Visual Method, if we want to practice speaking

directly, we can use Direct Method,etc.

2. From Aprilia Purwanti:

Please give explanation about interior and exterior in integral method!

Our team give explanation :Integral approach is reveals the interior

side of life,sees developmental stages,and recognizes and respects

the individual and collective domains. Reveals the interior side of

life is retains the existing practices that focus on the "exterior"

components of life, such as biological systems, economic

initiatives, social organizing, governance and sustainability, and

also works with the interior components, such as worldviews,

value-systems and epistemologies. These interior parts of society

inform our opinions and decision-making, essentially guiding the

ways we make meaning of our surroundings and interactions.

3. From Syifa Khairunnisa:

Please explain about 3 elements of language learning, and give example!

Our team give explanation :A language learning approach consist

of the following three elements:

1. Views about the nature of language,

As a teacher if we want to teach of language learning we should

know about the nature of language, it is very important for teacher

to know about that. Example : The history of foreign language it

self. Where that language appear, when that language firstly use,

etc.

2. Beliefs about language learning,

As a teacher if we want to teach of language learning we also

should belief about language learning. We should belief that

language which will we teach is important and easy to understand,

so we can easy to teach our student. Example: give our student

suggestion to beliefs about language learning, so they can more

understand about what we teach in that language.

3. Ideas about how the above should be applied practically to

language learning and teaching.

As a teacher we should have ideas to applied practically of

language learning and teaching. Teachers have different ideas or

method to teach their students. That ideas is very important.

Because it can make us different with other in teaching language

learning. So, the student can known recognize our method in

teaching based on our ideas. Example: there are teacher who teach

reading, used idea at the very first time is Reading For Pleasure.

1.5 Result of Their Discussion

At the end of our presentation, we give some questions to the participants.

This question was giventocheck iftheyfocusto our presentation or not,

whetherthey understandor notabout thematerials.

1. What kinds of learning method which appear from Functional Approach?

2. What must we do for the succesful working of Direct Method?

3. Explain with your own word about Integral Approach!

2.1 Conclution

Discussion held on Wednesday, March 27th 2013 in English Learning

Strategy class.This reportcontain of all about our presentation. Which consist of

The Main of Material, TechnicalPresentation, The Situation of Presentation,

Asked Question and Discussion, and Result of Their Discussion.

2.2 Suggestion

We would be familiar with the terms of approaches, strategies, methods,

techniques, and learning models. But many of the students education (prospective

teachers) and even the teachers who do not understand in depth, so it can not

explain what exactly the similarities and differences of these terms. So, as a

teacher we should understand in depth what is similarities and differences about

approaches, strategies, methods, techniques, and learning models. So, we can

applied it. And can explain clearly to our student. That’s very important for us as

a teacher. But, equallyimportantis thatthe teachermust be able toevaluate

theteachingand learning activitiestomake progressin learning. And as the teacher

we also should know all of the method in teaching language. So the teacher we

can applied that method in every lesson which suitable with the material and

suitable with the condition of the student.
