Lertsuksom Community

• Old agricultural area. Most residents are farmers and gardeners planting mainly pandan, bananas, and coconuts.

• 1997 - Phutthamonthon Sai 1 Road cut through the heart of community. The community was divided and weakening. Also there was a “Slum-like” area under flyover.

• River surrounding the community is polluted.

• Increasing number of young generations choose to work elsewhere leaving the old take care of their gardens.

• More land-owners have decided to sell their lands as the price has increased rapidly.

• Community leaders initiated activities and projects with hope to unite its members and rebuild their close-bond.

• A project under “Healthy Space” of RCFCD, Siam University.

• Received “Strong Community” award (outstanding practice) from the Office of Phasi Chareon District.

Waste Water Management

The theory applies to small farmers holding about 15 rai, or about six acres, an average cultivation area for Thai farmers.

Application of The New Theory and SEP

The New Theory

• Example of the application of the SEP to the agricultural sector was applied. Grow everything you want to eat which in turn can reduce their expenses and make more income.

• The total land area is divided into 4 plots in the ratio 30:30:30:10.

– The first plot (30%) is for water storage

– the second (30%) is for cultivating rice to ensure that households have a year’s supply

– the third (30%) is used to grow vegetables, fruits, and herbal plants for household consumption, with surpluses sold to earn additional income

– The last and smallest plot (10%) contains the family dwellings and outbuildings for raising livestock

• The “New Theory” = a foundation of self-reliance and a way to gradually improve a farmer’s standard of living while providing immunity against the fluctuations of the market or unpredictable natural disasters, but implementation requires sufficient knowledge, patience and perseverance to overcome any problems that may arise.

• A newly established community (10+ years)

• Founding members were evicted from other places.

• 2004 - The community leaders decided to set up a

“Sajja” savings group and were able to buy land from

former owner with the help of the Cooperative Promotion

Department.
