The following staff members contributed to our work in 2014, but have moved on to other positions:
Jessica Edelman, Heather Foster, Ashley Jenkins, LaDawn Joyner, Alyssa Sariscsany, Justin Smith, Susan Stroman, Keelea Thomas, Emily Walden, Krystal Weaver, and Kate Zilvinskis.
OUR MISSION
Monroe County United Ministries is a nurturing organization serving working fami-lies and those in distress by assisting with emergency needs and subsidized childcare. We provide quality education and a safe place for children, basic needs assistance for the poor and community service opportunities.
OUR VISION
Our vision is an improved quality of life for individuals, children, and families through education and empowerment.
When I first came here 30 years ago, my predecessor Joanna Fritz told me, “MCUM is an opportunity for you to accomplish much good for this community.” She was right. MCUM is the perfect vehicle
for staff and benefactors alike to help people realize an improved position in life. We know that we do not change people’s lives. They must do this for themselves. But we serve as a catalyst for that
change. We can support them by providing care for their children while they work or attend school. We can help in times of immediate crises by providing food, clothing,
and household items. This alleviates immediate fears about having enough to eat. None of this could happen without our donors and volunteers. With community support, MCUM has touched the lives of thousands of people over the past 75 years. Together, we will continue to provide these same opportunities for thousands more.
Thank you.

Childcare Services
Emergency ServicesMCUM provides basic needs assistance for Monroe County residents facing a short-term crisis, which may be caused by an unexpected injury, a large healthcare bill, or car repairs. MCUM helps ensure these crises don’t leave families unable to purchase basic needs by keeping them in their homes and off the streets.
Assistance may come in the form of food, clothing, cleaning supplies, hygiene items, bus tickets, diapers, referrals to other services, and financial assistance to prevent utility shut-off or eviction. In 2014, MCUM provided over 32,400 meals to those experiencing a financial crisis on the verge of homelessness.
MCUM provides full-time, year-round affordable childcare for children ages 2-6. In our nationally accredited preschool, we prepare children for success in public school and engage parents in their child’s education.
Our childcare program is the only accredited center in the county whose primary mission is to serve low-income families. MCUM’s low fees enable parents to use their financial resources towards seeking or maintaining gainful employment that would otherwise go towards childcare. Last year, 4 out of 5 parents said enrolling their child in MCUM’s program improved their employment or educational opportunities.

Staff Members
Help remove childcare as a major barrier to parents’ employment. High-quality, affordable childcare for low-income families allows parents to continue their education and improve their employment prospects.
Early childhood education increases high-school graduation rates, helps children do better on standardized tests, and reduces grade repetition.
Fight Hunger
A preschool education creates responsible adults by reducing crime and lowering teen pregnancy rates. Our emergency services program provides families with the food or assistance they need.
