INTRODUCTION

A total field magnetic survey was conducted on 18 contiguous mining claims located 2 \ miles north of the inter section of Highways 101 and 655.

The survey was conducted to identify any major structures and to delineate the boundarys of all lithological units.

The survey was conducted by D'Arcy Ryan and Byron Cooper during March 6, April 6 to 10, 1982. A total of 865 readings were observed to establish 821 stations. The field supervision, interpretation and report writing was done by Kian Jensen. All personnel involved were employees of Pamour Porcupine Mines Limited, Exploration Department {see Appendix A).

LOCATION AND ACCESS

The NW Tisdale claim group is located about 2J miles north of Highways 101 and 655 intersection, Tisdale Township, District of Cochrane, northeastern Ontario.

The claim group is accessed by Highway 655 which bisects the group into the west part (Group A) and the east part {Group B) Several gravel roads east of the highway accesses the southernand northern part of Group B.

PROPERTY

The property consists of 18 contiguous claims as follows:

Group A, claims P.577628 to P.577636 inclusively, were staked during June of 1980, and Group B, claims P.591047 to P.591055 inclusively, were re-staked during May of 1981.

Pamour Porcupine Mines Limited hold a 100% interest in the claim group consisting of :

P.577628 P.577629 P.577630 P.577631 P.577632 P.577633 P.577634 P.577635

PREVIOUS WORK

Very limited amount of previous exploration work is on file with the Department of Natural Resources. However, the eastern part of the claim group (Group B) was explored by Hollinger Mines during 1920's and 30's as a source of gravel required for their mining operations.

A few trenches do exist in the western part (Group A) however, the person or company involved is unknown.

Pamour Porcupine Mines Limited has conducted a VLF-EM survey during 1981 (Group A) and 1982 (Group B). Of the con ductors located the majority of them are related to the mafic- ultramafic contacts and the anticlinal structure.

GEOLOGY

A regional mapping program was carried out by the Ontario Department of Mines, which identified northeasterly trending serpentinite, and basic metavolcanics, massive and pillow besalts. Structurally, there is a northeasterly trending anticline, North Tisdale Ancline (Ferguson 1968).

The majority of outcrops is found in the northwest part of Group A, and the remainder of Group A is covered either by swamp or glacial deposits. Group B consist predominately of glacial deposits with very little outcrop. Estimated thickness of the gravel deposits in Group B exceeds 100 feet.

GEOPHYSICAL SURVEYS

The magnetic survey was conducted on a 400 foot grid spacing with readings every 100 feet on the traverse lines. The exploration department used two Geometrics proton magnetometers to measure the total magnetic field.

INSTRUMENT SPECIFICATIONS

The instument specifications for the Geometrics proton magnetometer are found in Appendix B.

(5)

PROCEDURES

Before commencing the magnetic survey, the baseline was observed at 100 foot intervals, in a 800 foot loop. This was done to establish a very accurate line of base stations which were used as tie-in points for the north-south traverse lines. Upon completion of the above, the north-south traverses were observed, also in a looping fashion, with readings every 100 feet. All the data was corrected for daily drift and diurnals.

DATA PRESENTATION

The data is presented in contour form on a l inch to 200 feet base map, with contour intervals of 100 gammas. The data base level is 59000 gammas.

DATA INTERPRETATION

The background level in this claim group appears torange from 59150 to 59250 gammas.

Anomalies A, B, C, D, and E appears to represent areas of magnetite rich ultramafics (probably serpentinite). The strike of the axis are as follows: A - N060 0 E, B - N080 0E, and C - NO70 0 E, also it appears that these ultramafic bodies are dipping steeply to the southeast. It is also possible that there exists a northwest-southeast fault bisecting the property from Line 64E at 11+OOS to Line 28E at 25+OON.

CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

It appears that the claim group covers the majority of the nose and northeasterly extension of the North Tisdale Anticline, which is flanked on both the northwest and southeast sides by ultramafics. Structurally, the ground is a good prospect and requires additional work in the form of geological mapping and overburden drilling. Also, some of the more interesting VLF-EM anomalies should have covered by a more detailing geophysical method.

Operating ManualModel G-816/826Portable Proton Magnetometer

1.0 GENERAL INFORMATION

l.l INTRODUCTION

The Model G-816/826 Portable Proton Magnetometer is a complete system designed for man-carry field applications requiring simple operation and stable measurements of the total intensity of the earth's magnetic field.' The G-816/826 is accurate and has a sensitivity of ^ l gamma over a range from 20,000 to 90,000 gammas. Since the instrument meas ures total field intensity, the accuracy of each measurement is not affected by sensor orientation. The inherent simplicity of the G-816/ 826 Proton Magnetometer allows rapid, accurate measurements to be obtained from a rugged, compact field instrument. This is a precision instrument and reasonable attention must be given to handling, battery condition, and magnetic environment.

1.2 MAGNETIC ENVIRONMENT . ,t

It is important that the earth's magnetic field is not perturbed by allowing unwanted magnetic objects to come close to the sensor. Such objects include rings, keys, watches, belt buckles, pocket knives, metal pencils, zippers, etc. When the sensor is used on the staff, one gamma surveys are easily performed provided the sensor is kept at a distance of three feet (.9m) from the operator. When the sensor is used in the backpack, certain articles of clothing and some types of batteries within the console will cause a five to ten gamma heading error in the readings. The G-816/826, however, still provides one gamma sensitivity and repeatability despite the presence of such a base line shift. The backpack feature is recommended for use in difficult terrain where "hands free" operation is required.

Prior to survey use, objects that are suspected to be magnetic may be checked in the following manner:

1. Attach sensor to staff and connect coiled signal cable to console. Sensor should not be moved or turned during the test, and the suspected article should be far away initially. r

2. Cycle the magnetometer a few times by depressing the READ button releasing and waiting for a reading each cycle.

3. Observe measurement readings. Each reading should repeat to l gamma, (A slow shift may occur over several minutes due to a diurnal change in the earth's field.)

4. Place the suspected article at the distance from the sensor expected during actual survey operation.

i

5. Cycle magnetometer several times and note the readings.

-l-

Page 13: REPORT MAGNETIC SURVEY TISDALE TOWNSHIP PORCUPINE …€¦ · PBM surveys ;: Energy, Mines and Resources, Eartfi Physics Branch - inertial gravity survey Geoterrex Limited, Calibogie

Operating ManualModel G-816/826Portable Proton Magnetometer

6. Remove the article and repeat steps 2 and 3 to check for diurnal shifts in the earth's field. If a diurnal shift is present, repeat entire test.

7. If the readings obtained in step 5 differ by more than * l gamma (*. one count) from those obtained in steps 3 and 6, then the article is magnetic.

IF THE ARTICLE IS HIGHLY MAGNETIC, OR IF THE SENSOR IS INSIDE OR NEAR A

BUILDING OR VEHICLE, THE PROTON PRECESSION SIGNAL WILL BE LOST, GIVING

COMPLETELY ERRATIC READINGS AND LOSS OF ^ l COUNT REPEATABILITY,

The magnetometer should not be operated in areas that are known sources of radio frequency energy, power line noise (transformers), in buildings or near highly magnetic objects. The sensor should always be placed on the staff above the ground, or in the "backpack." The sensor will NOT operate properly when placed directly on the ground.
