Potential NEXTThe vision for a progressive economy and a better life for mankind at large are incomplete without an understanding of the sources of sustenance of life itself - food. In this context, while the Green Revolution heralded in evolutionary changes in Agriculture, the battle to ensure global food security still continues. The reasons are not far to find: growing population, deteriorating production environments compounded by the growing menace of global warming, supply chain constraints, and a general neglect of the potential of agriculture have led to a steep decline in global food stocks and the sky-rocketing of food commodity prices.

At the same time, it would be incorrect to say, nothing has done to redress the situation. There are various instances of in depth focus on better crop management and the leveraging of biotechnology for the benefit of Agriculture is already a growing phenomenon. What is missing is bringing all these movements together to take stock of the big picture and to formulate the vision for the step ahead.

Welcome to AgBioAsia 2013A unique platform created solely to bring together the powers of biotechnology and commerce to leverage agriculture and move towards a sustainable level of global food security. In other words, AgBioAsia 2013 will converge on one linear length the depth of path-breaking perspectives, innovative technological interventions and the strength of commercial support all in order to empower agriculture to meet its global obligations.

The first agri-summit of its kind, AgBioAsia 2013 has been conceptualized and is promoted by the Government of Andhra Pradesh in partnership with reputed international organisations, including ICRISAT and FABA. It will be held in conjunction with BioAsia 2013 - the benchmarked global forum for Biotechnology - and will align itself to the overarching theme of TECHNOLOGIES. BUSINESS. NEXT.

While the larger interest of this forum will always be a sustainable agro-future for the global population, AgBioAsia 2013 will particularly facilitate key thought leaders in agri-biotechnology to discuss, debate and conclude possibilities in:sky-rocketing of food commodity prices.

1. Crop Biotechnology

2. Food Biotechnology and Food Processing

3. Nutraceutical

Focus NOW

Page 6: Report - AgBioAsia 2013

This genre of biotechnology has been silently gaining importance in the light of the fact that conventional breeding is limited to gene-exchanges between the same or very closely related species whereas transgenic technology enables combining in one plant useful genes from a wide range of living sources and at a relatively shorter time. In fact, in developing countries in particular, biotechnology has the potential to revitalize the agricultural sector, increase the profitability of farming and even, empower the rural sector by boosting food production, enhancing income for the small farmer, and improving his nutritional security. In this context, AgBioAsia 2013 will unveil and discuss the innovative technologies and trends from across the globe.

Modern biotechnology is often misconstrued as the tool for the rich farmers only, but the fact remains that of the 16.7 million people who grew transgenic crops in 2011, 15 million or 90% were small resource-poor farmers in developing countries (Report: ISAAA, Global Status of Commercialized Biotech/GM Crops: 2011). AgBioAsia 2013 will take special interest in dispelling myths like this as well as discuss in detail the benefits and risks of harnessing this new technology, besides the strategies to mitigate the associated risks.

According to a study by McKinsey & Company, the Indian food market is poised to grow from US$ 155 billion in 2005 to US$ 310 billion by 2015 and US$ 344 billion in 2025 - at an approximate compounded annual growth rate of 4.1%. India's food processing industry is one of the largest industries in the country - it is ranked fifth in terms of production, consumption, export and expected growth. India is one of the world's major food producers but accounts for only 1.7% (valued at US$ 7.5 billion) of world trade in this sector – this share is slated to increase to 3% (US$ 20 billion) by 2015. The Indian food biotechnology and processing sector is one of the fast growing knowledge-based industries in India and is expected to play a key role in shaping India's rapidly developing economy. Processing contributes to food security by minimizing waste and losses in the food chain and by increasing food availability and marketability, in addition to improving the quality and safety of Food. Biotechnology as applied to food processing is gaining importance with its tremendous potential and scope for producing high value added products with enhanced taste, aroma, shelf-life, texture and nutritional value. Despite the enhanced values, such technologies applied in the processing of food must assure the quality and safety of the final product. AgBioAsia will discuss the prospects and potential of applying biotechnology in food processing operations and to address safety issues in food systems with the objective of addressing food security while responding to changing consumer trends in developing countries.

Recognizing the rising importance of the country's Nutraceuticals and natural wealth, AgBioAsia 2013 will conduct a specially designed session to throw light on modern global concepts that complement R&D initiatives in this sector, ways of transforming nutraceuticals from a resource-based to a science-based industry and generating social, economic and environmental benefits. This will also be an opportunity to look at emerging opportunities and challenges arising out of the growing consumer awareness of health and wellness as well as to link the goodness of traditional knowledge with modern practices, technology and emerging business opportunities for the benefit of society. In this context, the forum will involve not just the stakeholders in the section but as well as the academia, government agencies and entrepreneurs who will ultimately drive the growth of the nutraceutical industry.

Dr. Sten Roger Kalla, Founder & Managing Director, Korn Technologies Ltd.

The scientific results from the field trials with GM Forage crops was presented in Kalla et al (2000) Molecular breeding of forage legumes for virus resistance: In Molecular Breeding of Forage Crops: the proceedings of the 2nd International Symposium on Forage Crops. Spangenberg G (Ed.), pp 219 – 237.

Dr SR Kalla was invited to address the XVIth EUCARPIA Plant Breeding Congress in Edinburgh, Scotland in September 2001 to discuss the regulatory framework for work with GM plants in Australia in general and the work on GM forage crops in particular.

Dr SR Kalla was the Executive Officer to the Inter Departmental Canola Review Committee responsible for the Genetically Modified Canola Review commissioned by the Victorian Government in 2003. He held this position as an expert in the field of GM crops trials for the length of the review from October 2003 until March 2004. The outcome of the review was a report containing independent policy advice to the Victorian Government for their decision on the release of two strains of herbicide resistant GM Canola bred for Australian conditions. These two GM canola strains are now grown in Victoria and New South Wales. They are also under assessment in GM field trials in Western Australia and South Australia.

Korn Technologies was founded in 2003 by Dr Sten Roger Kalla. The company owns a share in Intellectual Property that is applicable to the global grains industry. The technology and the IP position are described on the company web site www.korntechnologies.com. So far the technology has been evaluated in Japanese rice (Oryza sativa ssp. japonica) and Maize ( Zea mays L) and proven to work in the seeds of these major staple grain foods.

Dr Sten Roger Kalla has had many years of experience in operating within the framework of The Australian Gene Technology Act 2000, which came into force on 21 June 2001. As a Senior Scientist in a international public private research and development partnership he has been supervising field trials with GM forage crops and providing Annual Reports to the Office of the Federal Gene Technology Regulator (OGTR) within the Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing in Canberra. The OGTR Reports covered the continuing assessment of the Genetically Modified (GM) forage crops at multiple field trial sites in Victoria and New South Wales over multiple growth seasons.
