Those responsible for buying data recovery and security software should make sure they tailor it to the needs of their firm instead of taking a one-size-fits-all approach, a new report has advised.
The IDC MarketScape vendor assessment of the European data protection and recovery software market has noted there is a wide array of providers, each of which has a different mix of offerings.
It noted the market has changed markedly in recent years as traditional software has been challenged by the capabilities of server virtualization, disk-based backup and the cloud.
Reflecting on the variety this has produced in the strengths and weaknesses of each provider, research director of IDC's European Datacentre software Carla Arend said: "It is very important for buyers to identify their particular requirements and match these with vendor capabilities. The most appropriate vendor is likely to vary significantly depending on the requirements."
Several specific additional findings by IDC may provide the basis of best practice for software purchasers. One of these was that there should be a "platform approach to data protection" in which a more holistic view is taken on the basis of performance and availability rather than each single function. It argued the former approach would be more efficient.
Similarly, the report also suggested that data protection should be regarded as one part of a wider datacentre approach. "Storage, and in particular data protection, is an essential component for business continuity and disaster recovery," it noted.
IDC also suggested buyers should look at the potential of "alternative delivery models" such as the cloud.
Another recent report on data security suggested that companies should use a mix of different sources to meet their security needs.
This view was expressed by senior vice president and global head of research at Gartner Peter Sondergaard earlier this month. Speaking in Florida, he suggested that the growth of digitalisation would make every company IT orientated. With cloud, data and mobile leading the way, every company would find this growth so large that no one vendor could supply all their needs.
