Annual Report
2009
A word from the Chair of B.O.T.
The confidence the Board of Trustee (BOT) of the Zamzam Foundation and its
volunteers had given me by electing me as the Chairman of the current BOT is
highly appreciated. It is a daunting responsibility and given the current
circumstances, I must applaud the bravery of all the volunteers and humanitarian
relief workers in Somalia. Because of the commitments of our staff and volunteers
and the continuous support we receive from our partners in humanitarian aid and
development, we were able to help improve the livelihoods of millions of
vulnerable Somalis. Although this is a rewarding achievement, millions more are
continuously suffering in the country.
In order to pursue our ‘Mission’ of eradicating and/or reducing poverty, illiteracy
and diseases in the Horn of Africa through humanitarian aid and development
work, we need to expand the humanitarian and development work in Somalia. The
support of our current partners in humanitarian aid in the country are critical to
maintaining our work and the staff and volunteers of the Zamzam Foundation are
directed to maximize these limited resources through efficiency, transparency and
in outreach.
Sincerely,
Mohamed Ahmed Mohamed

Annual Report
2009
The year 2009 was considerably hard on populations in need of humanitarian aid in
Somalia. Environmental adversity in the region, shortage of rains and agricultural
food production and the disruptions of food-aid distributions combined with
continuous wars and instability have severely elevated human suffering in Somalia.
These events have also created the largest number of internally displaced persons
(IDPs) in the history of the country.
The worldwide economic crisis and cutbacks of humanitarian assistance programs
in the country by some international NGOs and donors have further worsened the
humanitarian conditions of the Somali populations. It has become an overburden
on the few NGOs, like the Zamzam Foundation, that continued to work in Somalia.
The staff and volunteers of the Zamzam Foundation made tremendous efforts
throughout the year to fill the gap and also sustain our humanitarian relief and
development activities in the country.
As this report will illustrate the details, I am pleased that the Zamzam Foundation
was able to deliver much of the humanitarian activities it had planned for 2009.
The support, dedication and the courage of the international NGOs who stayed
despite the hardships of working in Somalia are very much appreciated. I am
particularly thankful to the two thousand volunteers and the staff of the Zamzam
Foundation for a job well-done. We hope that the year 2010 will bring stability,
peace and prosperity for the populations in the Horn of Africa.
Sincerely,
Shuaib Abdullatif

and accomplished the drilling of over 200 new water wells and rehabilitated
abandoned ones, in various regions of Somalia, benefiting recurring populations of
over 15 million and their livestock. The Zamzam Foundation was able to maintain
care for close to 5,000 orphans and improve the livelihoods of their families.
During the seasonal (Ramadan & Eid) celebrations in the country in 2009, the
Zamzam Foundation was able to benefit over 2 million vulnerable people in various
regions by distributing dry-food, nutritious meals, fresh meat, new clothes for
children and other charities.
In the health care sector, the Zamzam Foundation created mobile clinics to fight the
spread of cholera in the Middle Shabelle region in April 2009. Between late 2008
and January 2010, the Zamzam Foundation, in collaboration with the I.H.H. Turkey,
successfully performed cataract removal and related eye surgeries for more than
10,000 patients in Somalia. The Zamzam Foundation also continued building new
primary health units (PHU) while maintaining access to health care services at its
hospitals, maternal child health (MCH) and TB centers.

According the United Nations World Population Prospects statistics, the infant
mortality rate of Somalia is 192 per every 1,000 life birth. Water borne diseases
and water related infant mortality is reported to be very high in Somalia
(UNICEF). Only 29% of the population has access to improved drinking water in
the cities whereas only 10% of the population has access to improved water in
rural areas. An estimated 70% of the Somali population live pastorally and are
dependent on their livestock. With scarcity of water sources, their livestock are
dying and they cannot survive. The water crisis in the Horn of African country
continues to pose imminent life threat to health care and under-five child survival.
In our efforts to improve access to safe drinking water and reduce preventable
water borne diseases/deaths in Somalia, the Zamzam Foundation in collaboration
with various international NGOs drilled of over 200 new water wells and
rehabilitated boreholes, in Banadir, Hiran, Hobyo, Lower Jubba, Lower Shabelle,
Middle Jubba, Middle Shabelle and Mudug Regions. Because of our efforts, in
providing sustainable water wells and the supplying and distributing drinking
water in affected cities and rural areas, we were able to benefit recurring
populations over 15 million Somalis and their livestock.

Seasonal (Ramadan & Eid) Celebrations are annual events to reaching out and give
to vulnerable populations. The month of Ramadan and the two Eids, al-Fitr and Id al
-Adha, offer good opportunities for the orphan children and poor families, as well as
the fortunate populations who donate generously to improve the livelihoods of the
less fortunate and the needy.
Last Ramadan (2009), the Zamzam Foundation has distributed highly nutritious
ready-breakfast meals, with the dollar value over $120,000 and has facilitated
Ramadan banquets to well over 62,000 poor people in the Banadir and Lower
Shabelle regions of Somalia. Thanks to the I.H.H. Germany, the Arab Medical
Union among other international NGOs and the 450 local volunteers who
contributed to the success of these accomplishments. The Zamzam Foundation also
distributed new clothes and gifts to thousands of poor children and orphans and
helped them share the joy of the eid-al fitr celebration.
Qurbani – meat or ud-hiya – is the animal sacrifice (a healthy goat, cow or camel) –
religiously ordered charity to the poor families and the destitute. The I.H.H.
Germany & IGMG, the I.H.H. Turkey, the Human Appeal International, the Dabous
charity and the Qatar Charity were among the supporters of 2009 Qurbani (Udhia)
charity in Somalia. Each year, over two (2) million poor people benefit from our
distributions of Qurbani (meat) and dry food, Ramadan support, Eid celebrations
and new clothes.

Large scale sustainable economic and social development projects are needed to
stimulate the local economy, generate income & improve food security among poor
farmers. Currently, the Zamzam Foundation helps to improve the livelihood of
hundreds of poor families by providing them with small-scale means of income
generation such as milling machines, sewing machines, dairy cows, capital to start
up bakeries or small shops, and technical and marketing support.
In 2009, the Zamzam Foundation’s livelihoods improvement programs benefited
over 900 students, teachers and poor families in Banadir, Hiran and Lower Shabelle
regions of Somalia through provision of income generation means for poor families,
scholarship for students, salary supplement for teachers. These programs were
supported by various international NGOS; Human Appeal International, Human
Welfare Committee, Islamic Association, Sharjah Charity House and others.

health care services to Internally Displaced Persons
(IDPs), refugees and vulnerable communities in
remote rural areas, benefiting well over 10,000
people each time. In 2009, the Zamzam
Foundation organized mobile clinics to fight the
spread of cholera in the Middle Shabelle region.
In 2009, the Zamzam Foundation, in collaboration
with the I.H.H. Turkey, successfully performed
cataract removal and related eye surgeries for
more than 10,000 patients in Somalia. The
Zamzam Foundation also continued building new
primary health units (PHU) while maintaining
access to health care services at its hospitals,
maternal child health (MCH) and TB centers
Annual Report—2009

provides each year to thousands of Somalis in various health care centers; the Arafat
Hospital, an inpatient – outpatient hospital in Mogadishu, the six (6) Maternal and
Child health (MCHs) centers, in the primary health-care units (PHU), outpatient

The educational system of Somalia was among the hardest-hit public institutions
after the collapse of the Somali government. Millions of children and youth
suddenly became idle in the chaos. The Zamzam Foundation believes that quality
education is the tool to fighting and overcoming ignorance and poverty. The
Zamzam Foundation has constructed and renovated dozens of schools in various
regions and directly supervises more than ten (10) schools in the Banadir, Bay,
Lower and Middle Shabelle and Hiran regions of Somalia. Almost 10,000 students
attend these schools. The Zamzam Foundation provides all level scholarships and
supports over 270 teachers with subsidised salaries.
Each year, the Zamzam Foundation constructs new schools and renovates
abandoned schools. In 2009, the Zamzam Foundation completed construction of
new schools in Hargeisa. Close to 20,000 students are benefiting from the schools
the Zamzam Foundation has constructed and those it manages.
