Conservation Notes (Sharon Gershoni, 2012)   

1) The condition of the Ledger (Image 1)  

  The Ledger was missing the front cover and spine. The back cover was detached. The end papers were missing from the first and the last signatures. Many of the folios were split or partially torn along the spine. Many pages had tears in the edges.                     

2) Conservation work for mending the Ledger    A. Cleaning the folios  

   B. Mending tears and strengthening folio center with guards (using kizukishi paper)

C. Tears in page edges were mended with dyed Japanese paper  

   

 

 

  D. End papers were attached to complete the first and last signatures (using Ingrés paper)  

      

 E. The Ledger was split into two separate volumes sawn in the Experimental Book Structure for conservation, in which each signature is sawn separately, to maximize flexibility, allowing the book to open without stress on the entire bind.  

   

 

 

  F.  The two volumes received a hard cover bind (a ¼ bind with black cloth and dyed tyvek)  

    

G.  The back cover was enclosed in a Self Closing Wrapper to be included in the archival box, separate from the volumes.
