The Background• Church built over 50 years ago

• Pioneers sacrificed in giving large sums of money to build this church

• No renovation for decades

• Most of us have only enjoyed the sacrifice made by the pioneers

It is time for us to do our partMarch 12, 2011 College Park Church, Oshawa

The Furnace Problem

• Current furnace on the edge of total failure– Major leaks which cannot be repaired– Overfiring

• Overheating in some areas of the church because of non-functional valves

• 52% efficiency and single-thermostat control Unnecessarily high heating costs

The Windows Problem

• Wooden windows installed 50 years ago:– Warped frames => can no longer open/close– Rotten frames, locks coming off– Stripped/broken opening mechanisms– Cracks/gaps causing substantial heat loss– Glass panes falling off, held by screws, tape

Many windows are beyond repair

The Windows Problem

• Many single-pane windows, meaning low energy rating (or high heat loss) High heating cost

• Windows in children Sabbath-school classes can no longer be opened No ventilation, a critical issue

• Repair cost approaches cost of new windows

The Urgency: CPC Shutdown• If the furnace were to suddenly break down during

winter months:– 8 to 10 weeks lead time to get new parts– 1 to 2 weeks to install new furnace

• Without heating, CPC would have to shut down for up to 3 months!– Similar situation at College Park Elementary School

caused a shutdown of the school for a couple of days this winter

The Urgency: Heating Cost

• Very poor efficiency of current furnace• Furnace heating the whole church even for

a single room• High heat losses• Natural gas prices forecast to start rising again

Thousands of dollars wasted every year!

The Plan – New Furnace• 3 compact boilers instead of 1 large one

– Redundancy if one breaks down– 2 boilers are sufficient to carry the whole church

• Very high efficiency (up to 98%)• Modulation from 20% to 100% of full boiler power

– Furnace only working as hard as needed• Heat balancing across the building• Peace of mind for many years

Heating bill savings will pay for new furnace in 5 years

The Plan – New Windows

March 12, 2011 College Park Church, Oshawa

• 2 windows replaced in 2007• 42 more windows to be replaced• 3 broken sections in stained glass windows

in foyer to be fixed• Estimates received from 3 companies• Detailed report generated by Ron Hall• Maintenance Committee ready to proceed

The Need

• Furnace replacement cannot be delayed– New furnace system received and scheduled for

installation as soon as temperature allows it• Windows replacement planned for this

summer• Makes sense regardless of CPC future plans

• Complete project cost estimated at $150,000

The Appeal

March 12, 2011 College Park Church, Oshawa

• Each one of us is blessed to have this church, and so each one of us has a role to play– Do not wait for “somebody else” to donate this time

• Maintaining the House of God in top shape is not only a responsibility, but also a privilege

• Consider using your income tax refund

• Donations/pledges should be over and above normal tithe and offerings
