Site Details

The fog cannon was: set up in ‘E’ area at the eastern end at the 575 metre mark (between P106 and

North Boundary Road) operated at its maximum elevation of ~45 degrees

facing west and was able to slew between 180 and 360 degrees of the compass,i.e. north through the west to south

in a straight line vector with the Lump Rescreening Plant and the Hospital monitorwhen the wind was on a bearing of 200–210 degrees

Trial Details

1. The fogging trial was run over a three-day period between the 14th and 16th of August 2010. It consisted of seven cannon runs and the timing of the runs was based on the weather conditions that would normally see the greatest dust impact on the Hospital monitor.

2. Run numbers 5 and 6 represent the best results based on the wind vector for the North Yard plant and the fog cannon position with respect to the line of sight to the Hospital monitor. When the source of the dust, the operating fog cannon and the Hospital BAM monitor were aligned, the monitor recorded a significant reduction in the PM10 dust concentration. When the fog cannon was not running the dust levels can be seen to climb (see the Hospital trend page).

Production

1. During runs 5, 6 and 7 the North Yard at Nelson Point was running at a high tonnage rate. Without the fogging cannon being in operation the PM10 dust impacting the Hospital monitor would historically have peaked at a much higher level. Two very distinct drops in the dust levels can be seen on the trend graph. These drops correspond to the running of the fogging cannon. The third significant drop during run 7 was mainly attributed to the wind direction change occurring during the run.

2. The other trial fog cannon runs (1, 2, 3 and 4) show that when the wind was not in the right vector for where the fog cannon was located (180 to 210 degrees) the reduction of dust at the monitor was much less marked.

1. The water nozzles on the fogging cannon did not clog during the trial.

2. The cannon pump pressure recorded at the commencement of the trail was 2500 kpa and at the end was 2200 kpa after 430 minutes of use.

3. The cannon is reliant on high water pressure delivery and if the water pressure drops below 600 kpa the cannon will shut down, requiring manual reset once water pressure is reinstated.

4. Provision of a 5000 litre header tank would reduce the possibility of the cannon tripping out due to water pressure fluctuations and provide 25 minutes of running time.
