a new year, a new place?Here we are, already into the third month of 2013. Perhaps some of your New Years resolutions may have already been forgotten, but if finding a new place is still top-of-mind, we hope youll find this magazine helpful.

As you go about your search and visit potential locations, be sure to get a feel for each company and the staff. You should be comfortable and courteous asking questions and in turn you should expect to be treated with consideration and respect. Think twice about any property management company that doesnt willingly provide any information you respectfully request.

Putting the customer first and offering the best quality rental space for your money is a property management companys ultimate goal. Once you find the perfect space, dont hesitate in going for it and making it your own. Hopefully it is one of the easier resolutions you may have on your list this year.

dont be taken by surprise when you move into your new apartment! Do your research first and make sure your needs are being met at your new home. There are plenty of little things you should check out before you sign your

lease. Dont just assume that parking or utilities are included ask. Dont just guess that theres a bus somewhere close by check. And dont just assume that youve lucked into a great property management company do your homework. Find out if theyve got any awards or certifications too.

Other unfortunate surprises include furniture that wont fit. While an apartment may seem spacious, you should take actual measurements to ensure. Often the configuration of a space can pose a challenge to placing furniture because of windows, doors, the room shape or the location of the cable outlet. You dont want to find out on moving day that your couch cant come with you or that you need to downsize from a king mattress to a double.

If youre not familiar with the neighbourhood, take a walk or a drive. See whats in the community and where the amenities that you really need are located. Not good to be more than a short walk to the bus if you rely on public transit, and you might want to see where your childs school is, how far the park is or how close the grocery is, so that there are no surprises!
