WOMAN’S CLUB COMMITTEE PREPARES FOR HEALTHDAY. The committee of the Salem Area Woman’s Club responsiblefor planning the 19th Annual Women’s Health Day met recentlyafter the February meeting of the Salem Area Woman’s Club. Thisyear’s event will be held on Saturday, April 27th with the theme“By Women For Women”. It is co-sponsored by the Woman’sClub and Glens Falls Hospital, with the support of multiple localsponsors and contributors. Women’s Health Day is held at SalemCentral School with assistance from administration and custodialstaff. Included will be a continental breakfast, a luncheon cateredby the SUNY Adirondack Food Services Department and doorprizes kindly donated by local area businesses. This year’s keynotespeaker is confirmed and six workshops will be offered.Registration brochures will be sent out soon. MARCH IS HISTORY MONTH AT THE CCC. During themonth of March, the Salem Courthouse Community Center willonce again offer a fascinating series of lectures. The talks willake place the first three Thursdays of the month at 7:30 pm inhe first floor Archive Room. On March 7, Debi Craig will offer

a talk about Susan B. Anthony and her connection to our area.Debi is a retired educator and is currently the President of theNothstar Historical Project. She is the past President of theWashington County Historical Society and Event Coordinatorfor the Washington County History Fair. Dick McGuire will behe guest speaker on March 14, and he will speak about The

Miracle of Food Production. This is a subject of which Dick hasgreat knowledge as the former Commissioner of Agriculture andMarkets for New York, former Vice President of the NationalAssociation of Departments of Agriculture and the former Senior

Agriculture Consultant for Key Bank. Dick has a wealth of knowledge and will provide an informative talk. The final talk of he series will take place on March 21 with guest speaker Paul

McCarty providing a power point presentation on SolomonNorthup. Paul is the Historian for the Town of Fort Edward andhe Executive Director of the Old Fort Museum. The gripping

story of Solomon Norhtup took place during the Antebellumperiod of our history, and the subject matter is timely since amovie on this subject starring Brad Pitt i s being released in 2013.The Archive Room is located on the firs t floor of the CCC whichs handicap accessible. MAPLE DAYS- Sugaring season is in full swing in Thurman, alittle town with a big maple industry. In a region where histori-cally more families than not tapped sugar maples to make syrupfor pancakes and sugar for baking, late winter is a time of inten-sive labor. Maple producers trek into the sugarbushes, often onsnowshoes, to drill holes, set taps and run or repair lines to carrysap to the sugarhouses for boiling and processing into a multi tudeof sweet treats. Beginning March 9 and 10 and continuing Satur-days and Sundays through March 24, four Thurman maple pro-ducers will open the doors of their sugarhouses to show how thisage-old tradition is practiced with the help of technological ad-vancements. Each weekend offers tours of four maple opera tions– Adirondack Gold Maple, Valley Road, Hidden Hollow and ToadHill maple farms, all offering tours of sugarbushes and sugarhouses,with demonstrations and talks about tapping, evaporating, filter-ing and candy-making, with tasting and shopping. Expect some

wonderful samples and great shopping for an expanded inventoryof maple treats. Also hosting wil l be Martin’s Lumber & CertifiedTree Farm—featuring handsome maple slabs and Lucyann’s craftspecialties, all with demonstrations. Peru Llama Farm offers llamakisses, kids’ games and author-signed books. Nettle Meadow Farmoffers maple cheese tasting and, weather permitting, tours, opennoon to 3 p.m. only. Activities at all other sites run 10 a.m. till 4p.m. Valley Road Maple Farm opens an hour early each day,serving pancakes and Oscar’s sausages from 9 till 1. Con Brio Performing Arts is pleased to present Maddalena Giacopuzzi, piano and

Matteo Bovo, violin, in their first American concert tour. Maddalena and Matteo are

graduates of the E.F. Dall’ Abaco Conservatory in

Verona, Italy. Maddalena has won first prize in ten piano

competitions throughout Italy, most notably “Muzio

Clementi” in Firenze, where she won a special prize for

the best performance of a piece by Muzio Clementi,

and”Nuovi orizzonti,” in Arezzo, where she was awarded

a prize for the best performance of 

a romantic piece. She has been

invited to perform in Verona, Venezia, Milan, Bologna, Stresa,

Mantova and Isola d’Elba. She has performed with the Orchestra of 

the Arena in Verona, Orchestra Monteverdi in Bozen, and the Haydn

Orchestra of Trento. Matteo won first prize at the “Citta di Giussano”

competition, playing Bruch’s Violin Concerto, and first prize at the

“Citta di Montichiari” and “Citta di Maccagno” competitions

playing Cesar Franck’s Violin Sonata. In 2012 he was a prize winner

at the “Premio Crescendo” competition in Florence, playing the

Beethoven Violin Concerto. He often performs with Maddalena,

and together they won a prize at the “Premio Pugnani” Chamber Music Competition in

Turin. Matteo plays a violin made by the noted Italian Luthier, Giovanni Lazzaro. Last

year, Douglas and Linda Bischoff heard Maddalena in a recital in Verona, and were so

impressed that they invited her to perform here in New York with Matteo. Maddalena’s

concert repertoire includes music of Scarlatti, Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin and Liszt, and

repertoire of the duo will include Mozart, Schumann and Kreisler. We are thrilled to

welcome these talented Italian musicians to the greater Saratoga area. To enjoy absolutely

CHILI CHOW DOWN CHALLENGE 2013. It’s time forbragging rights, an evening of fun, and contributing to a worthycause. The Greater Greenwich Chamber of Commerce invitesyou to the 2nd annual Chili Chow Down Challenge to benefitthe Greenwich Food Pantry. The project’s goal is to give innkeepers and farmers a chanceto meet, get acquainted, encourage transactions, and, finally, topromote these opportunities in the future in a systematic way.Each Innkeeper will take home a gift basket that could include

 jams and jellies, processed meat and grain products, flowers andproduce in-season, or any kind of product or information onagritourism or services from New York farms. Project collaboratorsinclude the Empire State Bed & Breakfast Association, the NYSSmall Scale Food Processors and NOFA-NY, assisted in theAdirondack Region by Adirondack Harvest, Adirondack NorthCountry Association, Saratoga County Chamber of Commerce,Warren County Tourism, Regional Office of Sustainable Tourismof Essex County and Adirondack Regional Tourism Council. BEARD CONTEST- Participants in the 2013 Adirondack Donegal Beard Contest are shaving theirfacial hair in preparation for growing their Donegal Beards for this year’s contest to grow the best Irishbeard. New beardsman are welcome to take part in the event, which will be held in North Creek on St.Patrick’s Day and is free and open to the public. The Donegal Beard (also called a Chin-curtain orLincoln) is a beard that grows along the jaw line and covers the chin – no soul patch, no mustache.Contestants must be clean shaven on or after January 1st. There is no registration necessary. In 2012,more than 20 men participated in the annual beard contest, now in its fifth year. CCC RECEIVES LARAC FUNDING The Salem Courthouse Community Center is pleasedo announce it has received LARAC funding in support of two worthy initiatives. The 2013rant will enable the CCC to once again offer its Music in the Courtroom chamber music seriesnder the direction of accomplished pianist, conductor and educator, Daniel Shulman. Theunday concerts at 3 pm will be offered on April 21, May 19 and June 9. Mr. Shulman hasned up an impressive roster of talented performers who will present compositions by Bach,
