LOST CONTROL: The truck lost control and overturned on the Magoebaskloof road on Monday morning, killing two people. Photo supplied.

Deadly Magoebas claims two more livesANOTHER horrifi c accident on the Magoebaskloof road occurred early Monday morning.

According to police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Moathse Ngoepe, two people, allegedly pedestrians, were killed and their bodies severed when a heavy truck lost control and overturned. The accident occurred just below the Magoebaskloof Rest Camp.

Ngoepe urged truck owners to avoid the pass, especially when the vehicles are fully loaded. A sign placed at the exit from the N1 in Polokwane prohibits vehicles weighing over seven tons from using the R71.

The R71 along the pass was closed on Monday and drivers were urged to use the Georges Valley road.

The cause of the accident is still unknown but heavy mist may be a contributing factor. A case of culpable homicide was opened.

The Magoebaskloof Community Forum said they are still not satisfi ed with the effectiveness of the policing on this stretch of road as is evident in this accident.

The Forum, formed in August by residents of the region concerned by the high number of accidents along the pass, has been campaigning for stricter enforcement of traffi c rules ever since.

“Trucks over seven tons still ignore the sign at Haenertsburg and the only to stop this carnage is to have more effective and constant policing at this junction,” a spokesperson for the Forum said.

Rob Morris, a resident of Magoebaskloof, said the victims lived near his farm and were sisters, both with children. They were walking to work on a nearby farm when they were hit.

Morris approached Limpopo traffi c offi cers on scene to ask why the truck was on the pass in the fi rst place.

“One of them threatened me physically and told me to f... off,” Morris said. “To their credit, traffi c offi cer M. Zulu did come and apologise to me about his colleague’s behavior, however he still did not give reasons why the truck was allowed down the steepest pass in Southern Africa.”

Looters benefit after accidentNO EMPATHY: Bystanders helping themselves to the truck’s spilled cargo.

LOOTERS had a fi eld day after a truck transporting washing powder lost control and overturned in Magoebaskloof on Monday.

Two pedestrians were killed and their bodies horribly mutilated.

Washing powder lay scattered over the scene, a tempting sight for looters who quickly started helping themselves to the spilled cargo.

Emergency personnel tried to concentrate on the patients as people jumped over them and the bodies of the deceased to get to the washing powder.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel

Moatshe Ngoepe said they are aware that police on scene struggled to control the looters.

A witness on scene, Bester du Buisson, says he saw emergency personnel partaking in the looting. According to him, they loaded washing powder into emergency vehicles. Further allegations of police also taking the washing powder were made.

According to Ngoepe, they were not aware of allegations that police were involved in the looting but will investigate the matter.

Macks Lesufi , spokesperson for the Department of Health, could not be reached for comment at time of going to press.

Jilted wife sets house on fireA JILTED wife set a house on fi re causing estimated damage of R80 000 at Makwibidung village on Sunday night.

The suspect, Maite Patjie (42) allegedly set fi re to the house because her husband was divorcing her.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel

Moatshe Ngoepe confi rmed the incident and the suspect has been arrested and charged with arson. Patjie appeared in the Naphuno Magistrate’s Court on Monday and her case was postponed to December 8, pending further investigations. She was granted a R1000 bail.

Agri Letaba bespreek knelpunte

Verlede jaar is 1 004 renosters in Suid-Afrika gestroop waarvan 114 in Limpopo doodgemaak is.

Alcohol and drug abuse con nue unabated. Children as young as 12 have become alcohol slaves. When drinking or drug use especially dagga, becomes a means for coping with life’s problems it can turn into addic on.Unfortunately alcohol and some drugs have become more socially acceptable, and this makes it even easier for people to experiment at younger ages.In addi on, alcohol and drugs are readily accessible to many of today’s youth, which further increases the likelihood that they will use substances at some me.Despite the government‘s eff orts to curb the abuse of alcohol and drugs, alcohol is such a big part of South African life today that we rarely stop to consider our pa ern of drinking. Many people feel that it is necessary to drink or experiment with drugs when at par es and social gatherings.Research shows that that some people drink or abuse drugs as a way to cope with the daily stress and tension from school or work, or to cope with other problems such as marital distress or even physical illness.Alcohol and drugs may become a subs tute for sa sfying personal rela onships, challenging work or self-fulfi llment. Some may use alcohol and drugs as a way to compensate for feelings of guilt, shyness or low self-esteem.Last Saturday police made a breakthrough when they arrested a peddler in Tzaneen.During the arrest, they confi scated 12 echany tablets, two cocaine rocks, a scale and an undisclosed amount of money.

The competition works on the basis of written essays, regarding a specifi c topic, which are submitted for judging by some of South Africa’s top economic minds. The top ten fi nalists are then chosen and afforded the opportunity to attend the offi cial

This year, it was my privilege to have been chosen as a top ten fi nalist.

The essay which I entered for the competition is titled: “Better Institutions – The key to better economic growth in South Africa”, which revolved around the assumption that better institutions will offer a safer investment area for investors and thereby offer sustainable economic growth.

10 LETABA HERALD Friday November 21, 2014GEMEENSKAP

Oud-inwoner maak haar hart oopCHRISTA SWANEPOEL

Geen werkgewer wou my ‘in my toestand’ aanstel nie.

‘Dankie.

OorsakeBehalwe oorgeërfde genetiese probleme of

beroerte (transient aschaemic attack – TIA).4 Serebrale verlamming5 Meervoudige sklerose (MS)6 Alhoholmisbruik

7 Onderaktiewe skildklier. 8 Kanker9 Blootstelling aan gifstowwe en

insekdoders.10 Sekere medikasies, insluitende

bensodiasepiene vir angs- of slaapsteurnisse.11 Outo-immuuntoestande soos lupus.12 Epilepsie.

Sommige mense by wie FA nie so ernstig is nie, kan egter tot in hul sewentigs of ouer word.

Hoe word dit gediagnoseer?Diagnose berus by ‘n persoon se mediese

SIMPTOME

BUSINESS & FINANCEBUSINESSLETABA HERALD Friday November 21, 2014 17

THE new premises for the regional fresh produce market were offi cially opened in Mooketsi last Wednesday.

Mooketsi Market situated on the R36, 15 kilometres south of Modjajiskloof, in Mooketsi was offi cially opened by the Mayor of the Greater Letaba Municipality, City Modjadji.

Speaking during the cutting of a ribbon to mark the offi cial opening, Modjadji said the market will ensure food security for the communities.

He said farmers in the region will no longer travel long distances to deliver their produce to the market. “It also provide entrepreneurial and job opportunities for the local people,” said Modjadji.

The deputy director of Marketing at the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF), Stanford Manthata said that the new regional fresh produce market will not only provide a much-needed link between farmers and the community but will also create jobs, stimulate entrepreneurship and facilitate skills development. “This state-of-the-art 3 000 square metre regional market will ensure greater food security, improved accessibility and a much wider variety of fresh produce at cheaper prices,” said Manthata.

Jaco Oosthuizen, group Managing Director of the RSA Group said the new facility guarantee the sustainability of emerging farmers in the wider region. “They can deliver their produce personally to the new facility, their transport costs will be cheaper

plus emerging farmers can learn about critical business success factors such as packaging, sizing, sorting, grading and quality control at the time of delivery. All of these factors are essential if farming businesses are to become sustainable over the long-term,” said Oosthuizen.

He believes that the new regional market is a win-win opportunity for everyone in the fresh produce chain- including the consumer- and it represents a successful template that can be replicated throughout South Africa and the rest of Africa.

Built on land owned by ZZ2, the Mooketsi Market is co-owned by FGX, ZZ2 and the RSA Group. It is RSA’s fi rst regional market and has a growing list of around 3 200 registered buyers, predominantly from Limpopo but also from Gauteng, Mpumalanga, Mozambique, Botswana and Zimbabwe. The facility currently handles over 20 lines in various packaging types and will expand into a one-stop-shop for all products as demand grows.

The facility is all under roof and boasts six cold-rooms, each of which can run at a different temperature. Importantly, the design enables trucks to deliver directly into the cold-room and because of the dock levels, isone of the few markets where all ambient product is offl oaded under cover.

Oosthuizen said employment and entrepreneurhip opportunities would increase in line with growing product volumes and demand. “A number of new jobs have already been created in transport

and distribution services as well as in the portering of product from the market fl oor to the loading area. With regards to the porters, the market has elected to absorb the costs of registering them and providing them with all necessary equipment, which allows them to retain their day’s earnings in their entirety - a move which aims to improve service delivery and create a symbiotic relationshipmbetween the market and the entrepreneur,” he said.

The infrastructure and information technology systems at the new facility are identical to those in other state-of-the-art markets in urban centres around South Africa and have been designed to streamline the transaction process.

The Market Agent, RSA is APAC-accredited, which gives producers legislative protection through the Agricultural Produce Agents Act. Producers also enjoy the unique advantage of cover through the RSA Group’s Fidelity Fund. The RSA Group is the sole market agent at Mooketsi and it will be vigorously pursuing its vision of greater collaboration between industry role players in the region. “RSA will continue to play a leading role in establishing a sustainable framework and terms of reference which builds trust and confi dence for everyone in the fresh produce industry,” said Oosthuizen. Sales hours are 05:00 to 11:00, Monday to Friday and 05:00 to 10:00 on Saturday. Deliveries are received between 14:00 to 04:00 Monday to Friday, Saturday from 13:00 until16:00 and on a Sunday from 18:00.

THE BLUE TEAM: Plasie staff members played the tradi onal Pro22 cricket match against Westvalia’s team on Merensky’s B cricket fi eld on Friday. Front: Gerhard du Toit. Middle: Francois du Toit, Hein van Heerden, Louis Fourie, Wessel van Rooyen. Back: Mauritz Perold, Willie Stevens, Magnus Steyn Snr, Danie Olivier, Magnus Steyn Jnr, Antonie Botha.

PLASIE staff members played the traditional Pro22 cricket match against Westfalia’s team on Merensky’s B cricket fi eld on Friday. The format of the game was 22 overs, giving each team member a chance to bowl 2 overs and if a batsmen scored 20 runs he needed to retire to give every player on his team a chance to bat. If everyone was out, he could come back and continue his innings.

Westfalia batted fi rst and was bowled out in the last over for 127 runs. Gerhardus was one of the players who scored 20 not out and returned in the later overs to give his team a chance to post a good total.

Merensky then had an opportunity to show their mettle. They betterd Westfalia’s score in the 15th over and won the match.

Merensky also had a few players who scored 20 not out (Maurits, Wessel, Hein, Danie, Magnus snr.) After Merensky won in the 15th over, the friendly guys from Westfalia decided to let Merensky bat their full 22 overs in the spirit of the game.

Everyone played their hearts out and some players narrowly escaped with a few scrapes and bruises.

At the end of the day there was not an offi cial man of the match but the Merensky players named Antonie Botha for his dedication in the fi eld, his gutsy innings with the bat and his “never say die” attitude.

Once again this yearly match was played in good spirit, decreasing year-end stress levels with loads of fun.

SPORTLETABA HERALD Friday November 21, 2014 27

Sports organisationsin need of fundingTHE private sector must lend a hand to South Africa’s sporting organisations who are in dire need of fi nancial support if the country is going to continue to produce world-class athletes and top performers in various sporting codes, says Charlotte Mampane, the Chief Executive Offi cer of the National Lotteries Board.

The National Lotteries Board recently invited sports clubs and no-fee schools in previously, disadvantaged and rural communities that support capacity building, universal access to facilities and access for people with disabilities to submit applications for funding.

More than 5 000 organisations from all nine provinces heeded the call and responded by the closing date of 21 October 2014.

Mampane has expressed that this volume of applications is a clear indication that there needs to be a greater diversity of income source for these organisations. The private sector is urged to champion the cause through their Corporate Social Investment initiatives.

Mampane says the National Lotteries Board will continue to provide support to sports organisations in dire need that fall

within the identifi ed priority areas. She says all the applications that have

been received will be subjected to the same evaluation process before successful applicants are selected.

The process includes acknowledging receipt of the application through email, sms or the applicant’s preferred method of communication. Capturing organizational information and classifi cation of applications according to various set criteria, will ensure that all mandatory documents have been submitted and are genuine.

Mampane says it is common knowledge that the National Lotteries Board work within a set budget for funding allocations.

“The National Lotteries Board would like nothing more than to offer each and every applicant’s stated funding requirements, however, this is simply not possible.”

“I would like to encourage all our benefi ciaries to work with the private sector in order to develop alternative funding models to ensure the sustainability of their operations,” says Mampane.

The Sports and Recreation Distributing Agency of the National Lotteries Board, will perform the adjudication of all the applications received before the closing date.
