    Example of Reno mattresses

The Reno Mattress is a structure made of hexagonal doubletwisted wire mesh, produced in compliance with the Directive89/106/EEC, has EC mark in compliance with ETA-09/0414and is provided with Product Certification.Reno Mattresses are filled with stones at the project site toform flexible and permeable, monolithic structures such as riverbank protection and channel linings for erosion control. In order to reinforce the structure, all mesh panel edges areselvedged with a wire having a greater diameter (Tab. 3).Reno Mattresses are divided into uniformly partitioned cells byinternal diaphragms.Dimensions and sizes of Reno mattresses are shown in Tab. 1.

Steel wire meshThe double twisted steel wire mesh used in the production ofReno Mattresses has mechanical characteristics higher thanthe ones suggested from EN 10223-3.

The nominal tensile strength of the mesh should be 37kN/m(Tab. 2); test done in compliance with EN 15381, Annex D.

WireThe steel wire used to manufacture the mattress is heavilygalvanized with Galmac, a Zn-5%Al alloy. The standardcombinations of mesh and wire are shown in Tab. 2.

All tests on wire must be performed prior to manufacturing themesh.

    1. Tensile strength: the wire used for the manufacture ofReno mattresses and the lacing wire, shall have a tensilestrength between 380-550 kg/mm2 exceeding the values

indicated in EN 10223-3, in order to increase the tensileresistance of the finished product. Wire tolerances (Tab. 3)are in accordance with EN 10218 (Class T1).

    2. Elongation: Elongation shall not be less than 10%, accor-ding to EN 10223-3. Test must be carried out on a sampleat least 25 cm long.

    3. Galmac coating: minimum quantities of Galmac shown atTab. 3 meet the requirements of EN 10244-2 (Table 2 -Class A).

    4. Adhesion of Galmac: the adhesion of the Galmac coatingto the wire shall be such that, when the wire is wrapped sixturns around a mandrel having four times the diameter ofthe wire, it does not flake or crack when rubbing it with thebare fingers, in compliance with EN 10244.

    5. Outwearing accelerated aging test in a general conden-sation of moisture containing sulfur dioxide (28 cycles) ac-cording to EN ISO 6988 (without showing signs of red rust).
