Michelangelo Buonarroti1475-1564
was one of the most important artists of theItalian Renaissance, a period when the artsand sciences flourished. Michelangelobecame an apprentice to prominent
Florentine painter,Domenico Ghirlandaio atthe age of 12, but soon beganto study sculpture instead. He attracted theattention and patronage of Lorenzo deMedici, who was ruler of Florence until 1492.
At age 23, Michelangelo completed hismagnificent Pieta, a marble statue that showsthe Virgin Mary grieving over the deadJesus.
