From the Principal’s Desk Relay for Life I was deeply moved, proud and heartened to see so many students, staff and parents representing various teams at the Relay for Life event on the weekend. The event, which raises money for cancer research, resonates deeply with many families in our school community. To walk the laps with you all, talking, sharing a laugh and uniting for a common cause is what makes this community so great. It was humbling to walk side by side with our students, to see them genuinely and willingly volunteer their time. They represented the core values and attributes we encourage at school from day one - respect, excellence, opportunity, resilience, optimism, leadership, determination and empathy for others. Thank you to all for your support, generosity and courage to fight a disease which affects so many families. End of year exams Year 12 exams start next week across the State, and we hope all of our students have done the necessary preparation to give themselves the best chance of success. Our exams this year will be held at the Kadina Football Club under the supervision of our Head of School Ms Liz Wilson. Good luck to all students with their exams.

Bushfires and bus/taxi run closure on Catastrophic Days Please be aware that on days of catastrophic fire danger, no school buses or taxis will run. The school will remain open and it will be up to families to decide if bus children will attend school. We will use our SMS messaging system to notify families. Please ensure that the school has your updated contact details. If a bushfire is reported in the area during the school day, we take the advice of the CFS to determine whether buses/taxis will leave school. If there is a fire whilst the bus/taxi is on its route, the driver has the authority to return to school (if safe to do so). They will be directed by the CFS and/or the police about what action to take. It is important that all students know about their own family bushfire plan. If there is a fire students are likely to know about it quickly and will become anxious if their family is likely to be affected. In times of danger, it is possible that incorrect information is transmitted. We will need to maintain a state of calm whilst the students are at school and the more they are aware of the plan, the easier it is to care for them.

Pupil Free Day Monday 21 November A reminder there will be a Pupil Free Day on Monday 21 November. Staff will be engaged in reviewing 2016 achievement and perception data, team target reviews and start planning and setting targets for 2017.

Police on Site From time to time we have police visit the school to interview some of our students about various matters, most of which happened on weekends or after school. Parents are sometimes shocked when they find out police have interviewed their children without their consent. Please note that the manner in which the interview is conducted is determined by the police officer. They will also decide whether it is necessary to tell the parents or caregivers about the interview. We have been instructed that we will not advise families without first discussing the issue with the police officer.

2017 Class Placements Don’t forget to let us know, in writing, if your child will not be attending Kadina Memorial School next year. Also, if you have family or friends moving to the district and who definitely want to enrol their children here, please let us know so they can be considered in the class placements.

We’d like as much information about 2017 numbers as possible so we can structure the classes according to student needs.

A reminder to provide any information you would like considered in relation to your child/ren’s placement, for consideration.

It needs to be a genuine request relating to your child/ren’s academic, social, physical or emotional needs.

However, sometimes there are instances where it has not been possible to meet these requests for a whole host of reasons. Please put your request in writing by Friday 11 November, or alternatively, make a time soon to see either Debbie Terrett R-6 or Tarryn Germein 7-9 regarding your child’s needs. Thank you.

School Attendance One of our key priorities this year has been to achieve 95% attendance across the whole school.

It is disappointing we have not yet achieved that target and in fact our attendance fell in Term 3 this year.

Should you require assistance in saying NO to your son/ daughter with regard to any matter, including unacceptable reasons for absence, please do not hesitate to contact the school. Let’s work together to make a difference to your son/daughter’s future.

Be on Time, Be at School, That’s the Rule!

School Speed Limits

A Year 10 Science investigation about motion and speed found 69.5 percent of motorists travelling in front of the school on Doswell Terrace last week were speeding over the signed 25kmph speed limit. The investigation was conducted at 9.30am for half an hour on Wednesday morning measuring the speed of 131 vehicles. Their data found 32 motorists were 10 kmph or more over the signed speed limit, with a further nine drivers speeding 20 kmph over or more.

I’ll finish off this week by sharing a few photos from Relay for Life. Once again, thank you to all of the students, their families and staff who supported this community event. Dean Angus Principal

Students and staff walk through the night at the Relay for Life event on the weekend.

The students were clearly visible on the footpath conducting their work. They were genuinely shocked by the results.

It’s a timely reminder to all motorists to slow down.

KMS has hosted three road safety events for our students this term. A report is in this newsletter.

Sub School News R-6 Corner

Congratulations Year 3-6 KMS students on reading over 39 000 000 words!

This year Kadina Memorial School was one of the top participating schools in South Australia by reading an amazing number of Lexile books in 2016. In fact the Year 3-6 students read over 39 000 000 words and completed over 5,000 quizzes, a sensational effort. As a result, Scholastic sent us prizes and vouchers to award students with the greatest growth in their Lexile scores so far this year. We celebrated this success with the students at a Years 3-6 Assembly on Friday, with each year level having an overall winner as well as a class winner. Talking with these successful readers, Kytanna said ‘I improved because I read different books than I normally did and I improved my attendance’. Jasmine added ‘I kept on reading and never gave up’. Riley commented ‘I read more every night and my goal was to improve my Lexile score’. We would like to thank Miss Penney and Mrs Rover for organising the prizes and vouchers. Congratulations to the following readers: Year 3 Overall – Isobel Larcombe 3CP – Jasmine Young 3.4KJ – Tyler Burnett 3.4BG – Ozzy Williams Year 4 Overall – Matthew Waters 3.4KJ – Travis Roberts 3.4BG – Hudson Duka 4LD – Brooke Cockburn 4AS – Riley Beech Year 5 Overall – Ellie Richardson 5CS- Jemma Dunston 5AI- Macey Jackson 5HS-Shania Walkley Year 6 Overall – Cheylan Wanganeen 6JN – Seth Tilbury 6AVB – Olivia Elsworthy 6KW – Kytanna Buckskin

Our Excursion to the YP Country Times By Taylor and Oscar RE-BL/LKB On Friday (last term) our class went to the YP Country Times. We were learning how to make newspapers if we wanted to do that when we grow up. We found out what they do there. They print ads and cards on paper. They make plates to print the newspaper. They use different coloured inks to make the newspaper: pink, yellow, black, blue. The printing press has its own room. They use it a lot. Rhiannon told us they use lots of full stops and capital letters.

Budding journalists point out to YPCT reporter Miss Rhiannon that they too use full stops in their writing!

Mr Shaw shows students the big machines used at the YP Country Times.

Thank you for hosting our Reception students. They had a great time.

Unit News This term Unit teachers have planned integrated activities for curriculum subjects around ‘The Very Cranky Bear’ series. Each week a different book is the focus of learning and lots of great activities are being completed. The books are ‘The Very Cranky Bear’, ‘The Very Noisy Bear’, ‘The Very Hungry Bear’ and ‘The Very Itchy Bear’. In Week 5 we will be studying closely ‘We’re Going on a Bear Hunt’ to keep with the bear theme. The last four weeks of Term 4 will be spent doing Christmas tasks. So far the students have learnt about rhyming and made tables showing rhyming pairs of words used in the books. Vicki has had the Junior students painting life size pictures of the students as bears showing their ‘cranky’ faces. They are also making masks to be used for their end of year performance. In the Senior class Rachel is working on a play about the characters in the stories; the bear, zebra, sheep, moose and the lion. Each student is taking on a role and they are busy practising their parts in Drama lessons. They have also been making faces of the characters as well as a fish mobile in Art. In HASS I have focussed on ‘Facts about Bears’ including their hibernation, where they live in the world and the types of bears. It has been great to see the students very engaged and having fun with this theme. Sandy Mumford Unit Coordinator

Character faces have been created for a play to be performed later this term, while the ‘Cranky Bear’ series is a literacy and creative focus.

Middle School Middle School students have recently completed Pat M and R testing. Staff will be looking at the growth experienced by individual students and those who didn’t experience the recommended growth. We will use this information to influence our teaching in 2017.

Each term Year 8 and 9 students are informed of their GPAs (Grade Point Average) and as a Middle School we set targets around these for improvement. This term we have seen considerable growth in regards to GPAs. In Year 8 at the end of Semester 1 83% of students averaged a ‘C’ grade, at the end of Term 3 96% of students averaged a ‘C’ grade. In Year 9 at the end of Semester 1 82% of students average a ‘C’ grade or better and at the end of Term 3 90% of students averaged a ‘C’ grade or better. I congratulate students for focus on improvement. With some learning still to be assessed students are encouraged to keep striving for excellence and improvement. Spending 10 extra minutes completing an assessment task may lead to improved results and more importantly consolidate learning and skills for the future. Tarryn Germein Head of Middle School

School Crossing Monitor Training Recently Year 6 students took part in School Crossing Monitor Training conducted by the South Australian Police. This involved explicit training by Road Safety Educators from the SA Police Road Safety Section. After completion of successful training students will receive a Certificate of Authority issued on behalf of the Commissioner of Police which, under the Road Traffic Act 1961 authorises the student to work as a school crossing monitor. The certificate authorises the student to stop traffic using a Stop Sign or using Pedestrian Actuated Traffic Lights, as well as give reasonable directions to pedestrians for the safe and efficient movement of traffic at or on the crossing as in their opinion is necessary. The training involved learning how to safely stop vehicles at a school crossing and performing safety assessments on when it was safe for children to cross the road (this included asking the monitors to check all vehicles had stopped prior to pedestrians walking onto the crossing). The session also included safe sign handling techniques and positioning within the crossing. It is extremely important that all people (including parents) use the crossings and become good road safety role models, by following the School Crossing Monitor’s directions, not only for their safety but the safety of all students and road users.

Australian History Competition Ten students in Year 7 participated in the Australian History Competition earlier this year. Congratulations to Jackson Campbell, Jacob Drummond, Piper Finch and Wilfrid Ramsey on their Merit awards. Cameron Edminston, Natalie Harris, Brodie Holland, Dean Larcombe, Connor Millard and Liam Ryan all received a Participation certificate.

Road Awareness Program and Fatal Five Senior School students were presented with two confronting road safety awareness programs. Eli, a road crash survivor, and Brad from the Metropolitan Fire Service gave first-hand accounts of their vehicle accident experiences. It was confronting, honest and a timely reminder to all road users of their responsibilities. Another presentation, ‘Fatal Five’ also looked into the most common reasons of a road crash. Speeding, not wearing a seat belt, inattention and distractions such as mobile phones and ipods, alcohol, drugs, fatigue and not obeying road rules were the most common causes of fatal accidents. We thank the presenters for taking the time to talk to our Senior Students the majority of whom are Learner or Probationary drivers. As Brad from the MFS said ‘You get to choose the risk but you don’t get to choose the consequence’.

Parent Club An informative and entertaining morning with guest speaker local author Tricia Stringer was held by Parent Club last Wednesday. The morning get-together coincided with Tricia’s latest novel ‘A Chance of Stormy Weather’. Thank you to all the mums, grans and friends for attending this great event in the school library.

Visual Arts at the Ascot Gallery

KMS artworks will be on display at the Ascot Gallery (under the cinema on Graves Street) until Thursday 10 November. This annual exhibition showcases the achievements of KMS art students from Years 7-12.

It is an exciting opportunity for senior Visual and Creative Arts students to show their work publicly and receive feedback, before moderation occurs. This year senior students Elyse Manners, Jack McBride and Mikayla May have featured works with a common theme of watercolour or ink washes running through. Year 11 students Tori Poole, Paul Wastell and Catherine Sloper have also contributed final works, with an exciting mixed media and design theme. While Year 11 Saxon Raymond has created a Butter Fish costume head (in reference to a Nurrunga Dreaming) to be worn in parades and events.

The back wall of the exhibition has been themed this year to explore how portraiture is used in learning at KMS. Students from across the school were invited to submit examples of portraiture or self-portraiture for inclusion. Examples from the 2015 Memory Project are also on display. This extra curricular opportunity enables KMS students to create portrait artworks for orphaned and disadvantaged children overseas.

Be sure to catch this exhibition, which closes on 10 November.

2017 Materials & Services Charge & Other Charges The Kadina Memorial School community is invited to attend the next Governing Council meeting on Wednesday 30 November, in the Hospitality Centre at 7pm, where the 2017 Materials and Services Charge will be discussed and approved. The Materials and Services charge is an amount charged to parents for the cost of the items and services provided to the student. The Department for Education and Child Development (DECD) has determined the standard sum for 2017 as $231.00 Reception - Year 7 and $305.00 Years 8 – 12. In 2017, the Kadina Memorial School Finance Advisory Committee has approved that the 2017 Materials and Services Charge be set at the standard sum. A copy of the ‘Material and Services Charges’ and ‘Other Charges’ is within this week’s newsletter for your perusal. If you have any concerns with these charges parents/caregivers/students can express their views in writing to the Finance Manager prior to the meeting.

World Field Archery Championships Year 11 student Kameron Rowntree won a Bronze medal in his division of Junior Boy Bowhunter Compound, B grade, at the World Field Archery Championships held in Wagga Wagga in September. The ‘field’ round consisting of 28 targets requiring four arrows each was held first under International Field Archery Association (IFAA) rules. Each style of target was shot under a slightly different format. A ‘hunter’ round was held on the second day with different coloured target faces Each day, except Wednesday, archers shot on a different range of 28 targets, to give a variation in terrain, and vegetation style and density, all factors which influenced the complexity of the shots.

Wednesday was a shorter format in the ‘marked animal’ round. This is similar to the Australian Bowhunter Association paper format, where the target is a lifesize photo of a feral animal, except IFAA only uses a wound or kill score zone, where ABA uses 3 zones of decreasing value. Only one scoring shot was recorded for each target, but 3 arrows could be used to obtain a score, each successive arrow worth 4 points less for the same score zone. 1st arrow could score a maximum of 20, 2nd arrow a maximum of 16, 3rd arrow, 12 points. This is close to the style that Kameron usually shoots in Australian National competitions (ABA), except having 28 targets instead of 20, therefore reaching a maximum obtainable score per round of 560 to bring it into line with the IFAA scores achievable in the field and hunter rounds.. A Presentation Night and Banquet was held on Friday evening at a local school hall to mark the completion of the championships. In all, there were 553 archers competing, from 16 countries, in 11 vastly differing classes from Freestyle Unlimited, through Recurve, to Longbow, in five age groups from cub to veteran, split into male and female, and score classes A,B, or C grade.
