In my last newsletter I was talking about the beautiful colours of the trees this fall!

Well, now we’re all raking those leaves into piles and our hands are covered in blisters!

Have you ever wondered how and why the leaves change? Here is the science behind the beauty of the leaves and the ultimate work they cause. http://www.sciencemadesimple.com/leaves.html

Is everyone in your workplace respectful of their coworkers?

Do they truly value each other? Does everyone in your workplace reward and recognize each other as contributing members of the organization? If not, you may need to look at how you treat, recognize and reward each other…here is a funny “youtube” video that offers a possible solution, the Snap Jar, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bXcqKW_NB-4 A Snap Jar is a way to anonymously share praise or compliments about your co-workers to promote genuine reward and recognition. It could be something very small or something very big that a co-worker has accomplished, achieved or even how someone has made your day. For example,

“You have such a positive attitude”

“I admire the way you…”

“I appreciate how helpful you were when you…”

“Great job on your latest workshop/campaign/strategy When you are ready to look seriously at this risk factor (recognition and reward) from the CSA Standard Z-1003-13 for Psychologically Healthy and Safe Workplaces, take a look here for information on assessing how well your organization is doing in this area and ways to improve! http://www.guardingmindsatwork.ca/info/risk_factors

“Early detection of breast cancer through mammogram screenings means there’s a better chance of treating

it successfully,” says Dr. Anat Kornecki, Breast Imaging Lead for the South West Regional Cancer Program. “That’s why we are inviting eligible women to start screening sooner rather than later.” In London, there are four Ontario Breast Screening (OBSP) sites that offer women the convenience of booking an appointment close to home:

Breast Care Program, St. Joseph’s Hospital, 268 Grosvenor St.

London X-Ray Associates, 595 Bradley Avenue

London X-Ray Associates, 450 Central Avenue

MyHealth Centre, 279 Wharncliffe Road

Why should you ‘Just Book It’ today?

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in Ontario women with one in eight women expected to be diagnosed with the disease in their lifetime.

The average mammogram screening takes five minutes to book.

Breast cancer has one of the highest survival rates when compared to other cancers.

Page 3: Remembrance Day · “There are two things that people often equate with culture, and it is critically important to understand the difference: 1. Do not confuse culture with morale

Mammograms are still one of the best and most reliable ways to detect breast cancer early on.

The OBSP offers important benefits for women, including appropriate and timely follow-up of abnormal findings and ongoing quality monitoring and management.

To book a mammogram, call 1-800-668-9304. More information can be found at www.cancercare.on.ca/justbookit.

Do you have aging parents or are an older adult yourself?

November is fall prevention month! Falling can be a life changing event, but the good news is, most falls are predictable and preventable. Making sure your home is safe is one of many ways to prevent a fall. Here are some simple tips to improve home safety:

Use night lights to light up the home. This can be handy, especially at night if you need to use the washroom.

Raised toilet seats may be helpful if the toilet is too low.

Double side tape rugs down to avoid corners from lifting and causing someone to trip.

Page 4: Remembrance Day · “There are two things that people often equate with culture, and it is critically important to understand the difference: 1. Do not confuse culture with morale

Eliminate clutter and place items on a shelf – the less stuff on the floor, the less likely to trip over something.

Hide cords by running them behind furniture. Use extension cords to help with this.

Instead of using a stool to reach for items in the cupboards, move items to a lower shelf. Add hooks on the wall to hang pots and pans that are used frequently. Use a sturdy step ladder.

Mark outdoor steps with contrasting tape to increase awareness of changes in height.

Add an outdoor grab bar next to the door.

Easy Yoga Poses For People Who Sit All Day

Ally Hickson

Are you sitting down? Okay, take a minute to assess: Are you slouching in your seat? Are your shoulders tight? Are you stressed out while racing to meet deadlines before the holidays? Here's a tip: Try some yoga at your desk. We know, we know — jumping into downward-facing dog in the middle of the office sounds a little bit ridiculous. But you don't have to go full-on vinyasa to get some serious benefits. Read and experience more … http://www.refinery29.uk/2015/11/124233/at-work-yoga-stretches#slide

Mindfulness and Self-Knowledge

From: London, M. (2014). The power of feedback. New York: Routledge Publishers

"When it comes to knowing yourself, you are likely to have some blind spots. We all

do. Unfortunately, not seeing ourselves accurately can have negative consequences. We may

over-estimate our performance and then are surprised when we are passed over for

promotion. Even when the outcomes are not as consequential, we miss opportunities to change

http://www.refinery29.uk/

our behavior. Underestimating our performance can also be detrimental. We may have done

well in others' eyes, but having a low image of our performance can cause us unnecessary

stress and may make us take actions that preclude opportunities that could have been open to

us.

Fortunately, there is a way we can improve our self-knowledge. This is called 'mindfulness' -

paying attention to our current experiences without evaluating them. Being mindful without

evaluating ourselves has two advantages: it gives us more and higher-quality information about

ourselves and it overcomes our natural tendency to protect our ego (p. 38-39)."

Culture - More Than a Word

“Culture is one of the most misunderstood components of business.”…

“The simple fact of the matter is that culture starts at the top” …

“So make no mistake about it, you already have the foundation of what your culture will be.

It’s YOU.” …

“There are two things that people often equate with culture, and it is critically important to understand

the difference:

1. Do not confuse culture with morale

2. Do not confuse culture with the workplace environment

Culture is NOT:

Karaoke nights Holiday bonuses Bean bag chairs Catered lunches The gourmet coffee bar Gift exchanges Ergonomic chairs Standing desks Contests, etc.”

To find out what culture actually is and how YOU can change the culture in your workplace…read this article Culture - More Than a Word by Matt Emerson at the Huffington Post … http://www.huffingtonpost.com/matt-emerson/culture-more-than-a-word_b_9929654.html

Try this… Powerful Leadership Invitations (?)

Think about it… Would you rather be invited to an event, or be demanded to attend? If you want to go to the event, doesn’t the demand change that at least a little bit, (and maybe a lot)? And even if you don’t want to attend the event, doesn’t the invitation feel good and perhaps in a positive way change your feelings about those who invited you? Everyone likes to be invited to things. And we invite people when we want them involved, when we value their participation, don’t we? Invitations are a powerful thing.” Think about this… “What if I invited people to . . . . . . Change their behavior? . . . Try a new process or procedure? . . . Join a team? . . . Participate more fully? . . . Make a decision? . . . Share their thoughts and ideas? . . . Expect the best from themselves? . . . Be more confident? . . . Take a risk? . . . Help others on the team? . . . Contribute more fully? Read more here…. http://blog.kevineikenberry.com/leadership-supervisory-skills/powerful-leadership-invitations/

Zika Virus Update October 31st

, 2017

Windsor-Essex County Health Unit recently identified Aedes aegypti species in the Windsor-Essex area. Aedes aegypti is the species responsible for the majority of human cases of Zika virus infections in the Caribbean, South America and Florida. There were three confirmed Aedes aegypti larvae found and all tested negative for Zika virus. Aedes albopictus, a mosquito species that is also capable of transmitting Zika, had been identified in the area earlier this summer.

These two species are not cold tolerant, and therefore not expected to survive the cold winter temperatures in Canada. There have been no locally-acquired Zika virus infections in Canada and the overall risk of local transmission remains extremely low. The MLHU operates a comprehensive mosquito surveillance program and has not found any of the species that can transmit Zika virus in Middlesex-London. The MLHU will continue to monitor for the presence of Aedes albopictus and Aedes aegypti in Middlesex-London and ensure that our health care providers stay informed about vector borne diseases and the local mosquito surveillance program.

The list of countries with locally-acquired Zika virus infections is available here: http://www.healthycanadians.gc.ca/diseases-conditions-maladies-affections/disease-maladie/zika-virus/risks-countries-pays-risques-eng.php

The Public Health Agency of Canada and Centers for Disease Control do not recommend routine testing of asymptomatic people with the exception of pregnant women with potential exposure to Zika virus. For more information please refer to http://www.publichealthontario.ca/en/ServicesAndTools/LaboratoryServices/Pages/Zika-Virus.aspx
