At her funeral,eulogists spoke of her great capacity for friendship, and she was indeed a friend to the Center for the Studyof Southern Culture. She was one of 10 members of the Center's early National Advisory Board, and the University formally launched the Center with the Eudora Welty Sympo- sium, November 10-12, 1977. Welty read from her works and listened to scholarly papers and personal tributes from novelist Reynolds Price, poet William Jay Smith, archivist Charlotte Capers, and literary critics Cleanth Brooks, Michael Kreyling, Noel Polk,and Peggy Whitman Prenshaw. Welty's photographs are well known and honoredtoday, but they were less so in 1977. As part of the symposium, Weltyallowed the University Museums to exhibit 35 of her photographs. DIRECTOR'S COLUMN

The transition between summer and fall at the University is alwaysmade more interesting by the Faulkner and Yoknapatawpha Conference, which theCenter sponsors with the Department of English. This year's meeting, the 28th in theannual series, focused on "Faulkner and War," and it attracted over 200 registrants,the largest number since 1997 when we celebrated the centennial of Faulkner's birth.

The conference had lectures by scholars from the United States, Germany, andPortugal, discussions by Faulkner friends and family, and sessions on "TeachingFaulkner." Thanks to the support of Saks Incorporated Foundation, the conferenceincludes outstanding teachers from Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, andTennessee. They attend conference lectures and activities and have their own struc-tured meetings to discuss ways to use Faulkner in the classroom. Joan Wylie Hall doesa great job of insuring the program runs well. Carolyn Vance Smith, who is on theCenter's Advisory Committee, coordinated the Faulkner Elderhostel program, whoseparticipants similarly brought curiosity, intelligence, and excitement to the discus-sions at the conference.

Activities associated with the conference add variety and make it a special eventthat has drawn thousands of participants over the years, many of whom keep return-ing. This year, the Rivendell Theatre Ensemble of Chicago presented the play Faulkn-er's Bicycle, about a fictional family involved with Faulkner in 1962, shortly before hisdeath. The University Museums hosted a reception for an exhibition of photographsentitled River Walk and exhibitions of Civil War materials and World War I posters.The Center's Gammill Gallery exhibited photographs by Arlie Herron, professoremeritus at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, who has come to almostevery Faulkner conference since its founding and made thousands of photographsdocumenting MiSSissippi over the last three decades. Late Tuesday night, Oxford'sSouthside Gallery was the setting for "Faulkner on the Fringe," an open-mike "alter-native Faulkner" session that in two years has become a lively part of the week's con-versation on Faulkner.

My favorite moment of this year's conference was the Sunday afternoon openingsession, which brought together past and present in Southern culture. I had the priv-ilege of presenting the Eudora Welty Awards in Creative Writing to two high schoolstudents; the first place winner, Angela Fortner, said later that the award helped herdecide to study literature when she begins college at Jackson State this fall. CampbellMcCool, cochair of the Rowan Oak SOciety and a member of the Center's AdvisoryCommittee, told the conference about fundraising efforts for Faulkner's home. Theaudience enjoyed a reading of the Faux Faulkner Contest winner (a wonderfulFaulkneresque account of Quentin Compson's trauma on receiving a traffic ticket onthe Oxford Square) and dramatic readings from Faulkner's fiction, arranged byGeorge Kehoe and Betty Harrington, the beloved wife of the late Evans Harrington,who helped found the conference and directed it for many years.

That opening session rocked with a performance of the RiSing Star Fife and DrumBand, starring legendary north Mississippi performer Othar Turner. Turner is in his90s and still performing with his family, including a precocious and enormously giftedgranddaughter who won the hearts of conference participants.

The Faulkner and Yoknapatawpha Conference has undergone a renewal this year.Twenty-eight year~ is a long time to continue such a meeting, but the Saks Fellow-ships for Teachers, the Faulkner Elderhostel, and the large crowd of participants thisyear suggest the conference is alive and well. Congratulations to all involved, espe-cially Don Kartiganer, Joe Urgo, Ann Abadie, and Charlene Dye, who coordinate themeeting with such dedication. The conference is an example of the Center's work inbringing together academic scholarship with a broader public community, and welook forward to planning for next year's topic, "Faulkner and His Contemporaries."

The party took place in Jackson,midway through the Southern LiteraryFestival at Millsaps. About 150 peoplegathered at the home of Mrs. Warren D.Reimers for a buffet dinner and a toastto Welty on her 75th birthday. Timemagazine writer Gregory Jaynes reportedthe event, noting that Welty wore a"corsage as big as a catcher's mitt" andthat the party's hosts "put the author ina prominent chair, and people came andknelt to share a word." Guests sang"Happy Birthday" as Welty sat before abirthday cake with three candles.

known as Friends of Eudora Welty, orthe Basic Eight. "We used to meet regu-larly on birthdays and other specialoccasions," Capers recalled, "to breakbread together and to wine, dine, andcelebrate." She admitted that the groupwould celebrate almost anything,"including the opening of a moon flowerone night." Robert Penn Warren oncenoted "a special kind of conversationalflow among Southern women" that wasa foundation ofSouthern literary accom-plishment, and the gatherings of theBasic Eight must have given Weltymuch with which to work.

The Center that year pre-sented the first Eudora Welty Awards inCreative Writing to high school stu-dents, awards funded by Center Adviso-ry Committee member FrancesPatterson of Tupelo, and Welty wasthere to congratulate the students. Sheread from her classic "Why I Live at theP.O." and answered audience questionsduring the opening session at the con-ference. The next day she spoke onFaulkner's personal and literary postalconnections, at a ceremony for theNational Postal Service to issue its com-memorative stamp of William Faulkner.

To honor Welty and to help celebrateher 90th birthday, the Center dedicatedthe Sixth Oxford Conference for theBook to her in 1999. The MildredNungester Wolfe portrait of Welty, fromthe National Portrait Gallery at theSmithsonian Institution, graced thecover of the program, and Noel Polkdelivered the keynote for the meeting,'''Living Near a Mountain': Welty,Faulkner, and the Mississippi LiteraryLandscape."

Welty had not been in good health in1999 and was unable to attend theOxford Conference for the Book. Whenshe died of pneumonia in July this year,nearly 1,000 people came to pay theirrespects, as she became one of only fourMississippians in recent times to lie in

Elder Robert Atwater was born nearCollege Hill, in Lafayette County, Mis-sissippi, in 1908. His father, in his mid-fifties at the time of his son's birth, hadbeen born a slave. As a young man,Elder Atwater stayed near home, wherehe did agricultural and constructionwork for wages that rarely exceeded 20cents an hour. In 1938, he moved to St.Louis, where he could earn 75 cents anhour as a construction-site laborer. Dur-ing World War II, he served in thearmed forces, performing aircraft main-tenance on air bases in Mississippi andTexas. After the war, he returned to St.Louis, where he lived a life he character-ized as "in the world" and spent in pur-suit of "worldly things." In 1964, whileon a construction job, he "felt God'scall" and began weeping uncontrollably.He later described that moment as "the

spirit of the Lord coming on me." Hejoined a Primitive Baptist Church in St.Louis and soon began to preach. In1968, after a dream in which his latefather, Elder Calvin Atwater, appearedto him and silently pointed south, hereturned to Mississippi. He soon becamepastor of Hurricane Creek PrimitiveBaptist Church, the church his fatherhad founded around 1910 and pastoreduntil his death in 1944. In 1971, he tookon Rocky Mount Primitive BaptistChurch as a second church, and he laterbecame pastor of a third church in WestPoint. He served for many years as Mod-erator of the Cedar Creek PrimitiveBaptist Association, a coalition of Prim-itive Baptist churches in north Missis-sippi and west Tennessee. At the time ofhis death, he was one of the most widelyrespected and deeply beloved Primitive

state at the Old Capitol in Jackson.Around 600 people later attended thefuneral for Welty at Galloway MemorialUnited Methodist Church, where shehad been a longtime member. It was asimple ceremony of Bible readings,hymns, eulogies by Governor WilliamWinter and her agent-friend TimothySeldes, and a sermon by retiredMethodist Bishop Clay Lee. Winterrecalled her as "the most gracious andgenerous human being any of us willever know," and Seldes noted that noone he had known "ever surpassed herfor the speed of her wit." Bishop Leenoted that all of the Bible readings werefrom the King James Version becauseshe had so often praised the majesty ofits language.

Welty died while this year's Faulknerand Yoknapatawpha Conference wastaking place, and the conference heldan impromptu memorial session thatnicely reflected the power of her con-nections with people. Pearl McHaney,editor of the Eudora Welty Newsletter,

read from her work, as did TomMcHaney and Noel Polk. ActressRebecca Jernigan performed a segmentof "Why I Live at the P.O.," and NancyLippincott Ashley, from Dallas, Texas,delivered a testimonial to Welty's influ-ence. Oxford's Becky Moreton told ofher mother's friendship with Welty fromthe time they were young girls in Jack-son, and teachers from Valdosta andSavannah, Georgia, talked of Welty,with one teacher reading a poem, "InMemoriam for Ms. Welty," written onnews of her death. Perhaps most power-fully, University of Mississippi freshmanMarcus Luton told of reading Welty's "AWorn Path" in the 10th grade of schoolin Belzoni, Mississippi. At first skepticalof what he might get from the story, hebecame devoted to her work. "I felt as ifI knew her," Luton said. "She remindedme of my grandmother. I was so used tohaving my grandmother stand over meand tell me stories."

The world has honored Welty withawards. She received the Pulitzer Prizein 1973 for her novel The Optimist'sDaughter, and she also earned the

National Book Critics Circle Award,the American Book Award, several O.Henry Awards, the Gold Medal of theNational Institute of Arts and Letters,and the Medal of Freedom in 1980. Shewas also inducted into the FrenchLegion of Honor. In 1999, she becamethe first living writer published in theprestigious Library of America series.

The occasion of her death showed therecognition of her literary achievementbut also how she had come to transcendit. Center staff and faculty who appreci-ated her long support for our work knewher personal qualities, what JacksonState Professor Leslie B. McLemorecalled her "quiet dignity." She wrote ofherself as a "privileged observer," but sheshared generously her understandings ofhuman sympathy. "Oh, what she wasable to catch with her eyes, hear withher ears," said Bishop Lee at the funeral."Would any of us deny the fact thatEudora had God-blessed eyes?"

Church and Family the Focal Point of GammillGallery Exhibition through October 12

Primitive Baptist Church ElderRobert Atwater, an energetic 92-year-old Lafayette County native who ledtwo small churches simultaneouslybefore his recent unexpected death,would have admired Old Ways: Churchand Family, a narrative photographyexhibition that runs through October12 at the Center's Gammill Gallery inBarnard Observatory.

The 55 framed and mounted blackand white images, which featurepoignant glimpses of Atwater and themembers of two Primitive Baptist sisterchurches-Hurricane Creek inLafayette County and Rocky Mount inPanola County-portray the long-last-ing fellowship and, especially, faith thatwere the hallmark of Atwater's spirit.

The pictures and accompanying essayswill be displayed at the gallery throughOctober 12. The Gammill Gallery isopen Monday through Friday from 8a.m. to 5 p.m. The exhibition is free andopen to the public.

"I wanted to show how people's deeplyrooted values played very meaningfulparts in their lives," said Director ofDocumentary Studies David Wharton,who photographed and arranged theexhibition. "I feel privileged to havebeen able to do this."

The photographs, which are part of acontinuing project by Wharton, aresorted in three groups: the momentsafter church services, individual por-

traits, and family reunions. The exhibi-tion depicts such affecting scenes asAtwater and church deacons preparingfor a baptism in a rural pond, Atwaterresting inside a van between services, anassemblage of church mothers dressed inwhite, and a little boy ogling handfuls offreshly gathered eggs.

Wharton, who took the photographsover a one-year span that ended in June,said he was shocked by Atwater's recentdeath, calling it "crystallizing." "ElderAtwater was a central focus of every-thing," said Wharton. "He knew the

out. His sermons usually spoke of howgood the Lord was and how good Hemade people feel."

In 1968, Atwater assumed the leader-ship of Hurricane Creek Primitive Bap-tist Church, which his father founded in1910. The active membership at the twochurches is very small, with about 30 to50 people attending a typical service.

Wharton is the author of The Soul of aSmall Texas Town: Photographs, Memo-ries, and History from McDade (Universi-ty of Oklahoma Press, 2000), which ishis published dissertation. He has both adoctorate in American Studies and amaster's of fine arts degree in photogra-phy from the University of Texas atAustin. At the University of Mississippisince 1999, Wharton has worked onseveral photographic projects, includingLocal Legacies: the First Monday Sale andTrade Days in Ripley, MississiPPi, Recon-structing Oxford: Development andChange, and, in collaboration withSouthern Studies graduate students,Yoknapatawpha 2000: The Changing Faceof Lafayette County.

Keating Exhibition HasPermanent Home

Last summer, in celebration of Bernand Franke Keating's gift of their photo-graphic collection to the University'sSouthern Media Archive, the Centermounted Words and Photographs, an exhi-bition surveying the work of the dynamictravel writing-photojournalist couplefrom Greenville, Mississippi.After beingdisplayed at the Center's gallery in Julyand August 2000, Words and Photographswent to the Keatings' hometown for atemporary showing at Greenville ArtCouncil's Wetherbee House.

Now the exhibition has found a per-manent home at the Greenville HigherEducation Center, a new facility jointlyoperated by Mississippi Delta Commu-nity College, Delta State University,and Mississippi Valley University. Thebuilding was dedicated and the exhibi-tion was opened on September 6 duringceremonies attended by local and state

officials and representatives of the Cen-ter for the Study of Southern Culture,which received thanks and praise fordonating the exhibition to Greenvilleand its new facility for higher education.

Susan Lloyd McClamroch, SouthernStudies M.A. graduate, is the curator ofWords and Photographs. In preparationfor the exhibition, she spent a year col-lecting and organizing thousands ofimages of the American South that theKeatings captured on photographic-filmmedia over the course of a marriage anda professional partnership spanningmore than half of the 20th century.Words and Photographs credits the rangeof publications illustrated by Keatingphotographs and chronicles the 50 yearsthat Southern faces and Southern placescaptured by Keating cameras haveappeared, nationally and international-ly, in print media.

When Ivey Gladin died on May 31 of this year in his home-town of Helena, Arkansas, the lower Mississippi Delta lost oneof its most gentle and revealing chroniclers of everyday life.With more than a passing interest in photography as a youngman, Gladin purchased a Helena photography studio in 1939and with his wife, Morvene, began serving the photographicneeds of Helena and Phillips County, Arkansas, for over 50years. Ivey Gladin was far from your ordinary small town pho-tographer, working and collecting with a keen sense of localhistory and culture, amassing a thorough rendering of Helena,West Helena, and the surrounding Delta area. Gladin was only19 years old when he bought the studio with borrowed fundsfrom his father, forgoing college to start his own business. Heand Morvene married in 1940, unaware that soon after Iveywould be called up by the Navy for training in Indianapolis.Throughout his service in the Navy his mother and Morvenekept the town and surrounding areas supplied with the pho-tographs they needed. Morvene continued her own photogra-phy long after Ivey returned from the Navy, retouching andhand coloring portraits and serving as staff photographer forthe Twin City Tribune from 1974 to1980.

I first met Ivey and Morvene in 1994 when I drove to Hele-na to talk with him about his photographic collection, whathe intended to do with it once he closed his business, andwhether he would consider the University of MissiSSippi'sSouthern Media Archive a favorable resting place for his andMorvene's work. His historic home in downtown Helena,which, like the Gladins, seemed to be edging toward retire-ment, housed images in nearly every room. Showing me filesof prints and negatives, Ivey talked as much about history ashe did about photography. When he showed me individualphotographs he recounted stories not of himself or his photo-graphic exploits, but rather would tell of the people andevents memorialized in the image. For many years the editorof the Phillips County Historical Review, he understood theunique story of his river town and also was well aware of thehistorical Significance of his own work.

He is best known for his 1940s photographs of Sonny BoyWilliamson, Joe "Pinetop" Perkins, and fellow bluesmen play-ing on the King Biscuit Time radio program at KFFA studio (oneof those images was printed on T-shirts many years later, with-out Gladin's permission). Now permanently housed in theSouthern Media Archive at the University, the Gladin Collec-tion is a rich, multidimensional treasure trove of pictorial his-tory. Including many images of the railroad and MississippiRiver commerce, the Gladin Collection provides thoroughdocumentation of life and culture in the Delta in the mid-20thcentury.

"One of the most interesting aspects of being a photograph-er," Gladin said in an interview soon after the Center acquired

his collection, "is to rise each day not knowing what you mightbe photographing before or even after dark. Almost every jobwas a new learning experience." Gladin never seemed to tirefrom the unpredictability of learning new ways of making pic-tures, meeting new people, or talking about his work. Like moststudio photographers, he relied on portraits as the bedrock ofhis business, and he made pictures that reflected how clientssaw themselves. Portraits, lvey Gladin once said, were what hewas most proud of. And it's not surprising, given that good por-traits require a sincere and sensitive connection between thephotographer and subject. Ivey Gladin warmed to peoplequickly, making for picture sessions of relaxed ease and natural-ly sympathetic portraits.

Susan Gladin, the daughter of Morvene and Ivey, now livesin Hillsborough, North Carolina. In her regular newspapercolumn in the Chapel Hill Herald, she wrote about the openingof a Gladin Studio exhibition at the Center. "The pictures [inthe exhibition) subtly told the story of integration in our town,culminating in the one of the fishing rodeo from the '70s wherea black child and a white child display their winning fish, sideby side, equally proud."

One of the great strengths of the Gladin Collection is thatit covers such a range of subject matter and a large stretch oftime, from the images documenting the construction of theHelena bridge to the crowning of local beauty queens, fromportraits of area blues and gospel groups to scenes of industri-allife along the river. Ivey Gladin understood this fact pro-foundly, knowing that his life's work resulted from a well-livedcareer but also, if preserved, cared for, and archived, wouldprovide us with a rich visual history of one small town in theMississippi Delta.

George Washington Scholars Institute for MississippiTeachers to Take Place in Oxford in 2002

The George Washington ScholarsInstitute for Mississippi Teachers, aweeklong program for elementary andsecondary teachers, offered in collabora-tion with the Education Department ofMount Vernon on Washington's estatein Virginia, will take place June 1-8,2002, at the Center. This will be thefourth year that Mount Vernon hasoffered the institute for Mississippiteachers; however, it will be the first yearthat the institute will be held in Missis-sippi. For the first three years it was heldat the Washington estate in Virginia.Holding the institute at the Center in2002 will mean that more teachers canparticipate than in the past (Mount Ver-non accommodations can house just 20teachers); it will also give teachers fromthroughout the state an opportunity tomake a direct and immediate connectionbetween the founding of the nation andthe pre-Civil War history of their owncommunities. Henceforth the institutewill alternate between Mount Vernonand Mississippi every third year, withcontinuing funding provided primarilyby a gift from the Phil Hardin Founda-tion of Meridian, Mississippi.

Mississippian Served as SummerIntern at Mount Vernon

Five students from across the coun-try-including one from Mississippi-spentthe summer as interns for the GeorgeWashington Pioneer Farmer site at theMount Vernon Estate and Gardens inVirginia. The interns had the opportuni-ty to live history as they, along withMount Vernon staff, maintained an18th-century farm and taught visitorsabout a lesser-know side ofGeorge Wash-ington, that of an innovative farmer. Theinterns lived at Mount Vernon, dressedin 18th-century attire, worked in thefields, tended livestock, conductedwheat-treading demonstrations in areplica of the 16-sided barn Washingtonbuilt in 1792, and told visitors about pio-neer farming and Washington's agricul-tural innovations.

Daniel Cooper, the Mississippianselected from a national pool of appli-cants for the internship program, is cur-rently studying history at Delta StateUniversity in Cleveland and plans tobe a teacher. "At Mount Vernon, I hadthe opportunity to teach others and tolearn in a way few people get to," saidCooper. "The knowledge of historygained here and the experiences ofdealing with people will help me andmy future students."

The institute will focus on all aspects ofWashington's life as they relate to colo-nial history and the formation of theAmerican Republic. Preeminent scholarswill discuss various aspects of colonial his-tory, including the Revolution, the Con-stitutional Convention, military life,slavery, farming, Federalists and Republi-cans, the Presidency (George Washing-ton in effect invented the precedence forwhat we now know as the American Pres-idency, for which there was no previousmodel), Leadership, Character, the Relin-quishment of Power, and Washington andthe Founding Fathers' lasting contribu-tions to the American Democracy.

Nationally known scholars in theirfields, such as Dorothy Twohig, PeterHenriques, Dennis Pogue, John Riley,Dave Palmer, and Jack Warren, willimmerse Mississippi teachers in variousaspects of Washington's life as theyrelated to colonial times and the out-come of the American Revolution. Theteachers will be chosen on a competitivebasis by the Mississippi Department ofEducation and the Mount VernonDepartment of Education. After a week'sintensive training at the institute,teachers return to their respective class-rooms and prepare lesson plans, the bestof which will be published on the MountVernon Web site, which can be accessedby teachers all over the world. Partici-pants also conduct training sessions forother teachers in their schools.

Lessons Learned: Southern Studies Faculty Memberand Fulbright Scholar Rediscovers the South Overseas

She specializes in Southern literaturetraditions, especially the work of womenwriters in the South. Yet, despite hercritical Southern scholarship, Kathryn

.McKee, McMullan Assistant Professor ofSouthern Studies at the University and arecent Fulbright Scholar, it was a groupof foreign students this summer thattaught McKee her most memorable les-son about the South: that her personaland academic quest to really know theSouth will never end.

As a 2000-2001 Fulbright Junior Lec-tureship recipient, McKee in April beganteaching Southern literature and cultureclasses at the University of Mainz in Ger-many. Informal discourses on literature,race relations, politics, and religion withstudents in the school's American Stud-ies Program affected her own sensibilitiesand for the first time offered her a glimpseof the South from a radically differentperspective, she said.

"The whole experience exceeded myexpectations," said McKee, who also isan assistant professor of English on theOxford campus. "In my role as a teacher,it made me think of how I present theSouth to different students; as a writer, itmade me think of how I deal with issuesof 'Southernness'; and, as a person, itmade me think of how I have respondedOr failed to respond to my own South-emness. "It really was a powerful experi-ence," McKee continued. "It was moreeye-opening than I thought it might be."

A perpetual bastion of racism. Prosely-tizing Baptists warning of fire and brim-stone. A region whose evolving historyceased with the end of the civil rightsmovement. These were the familiarSouthern stereotypes that shaped most ofher students' limited perspectives of theSouth, McKee said. Her German stu-dents-who all were fluent in English-wanted to know what distinguished theSouth from the rest of the United Statesand why it was singled out, she said. Andtheir reactions to Southern literaturereadings fueled questions which centeredprimarily on the aspects of race.

"I found them to be curious and tohave a lot of hard questions for me," saidMcKee, who was among some 2,000U.S. Fulbright recipients to travel over-seas earlier this year. "The studentsmade me realize how far the South hascome and how far it still has to go."

Tactfully, McKee drew a parallelbetween the South's intriguing and tur-bulent history with that of Germany's: "Itried to describe to them the history thata country or region often has troublecoming to terms with. That was reallypowerful for me."

While McKee spent much of her tourteaching the students about Faulkner,Eudora Welty, and other enduringSouthern novelists, she also engagedthem in lighter dialogues on Southernmusic and foods. "I didn't realize thatthere was so much left to explore about

being Southern," said McKee, a Ken-tucky native. "There still seems to bethis persistent strand of identity that mygeneration hasn't dealt with, as previousgenerations have."

McKee, who teaches three undergradu-ate courses this fall--Survey of AmericanLiterature to the Civil War, Introductionto Southern Studies, and Southern Stud-ies Seminar I-kicked off the Center'sweekly Fall 2001 Brown Bag Lunch &Lecture Series with her September 5 talk,"What I Learned About the AmericanSouth in Germany: A Fulbright ScholarComes Home."

Intern Rana Wallace Reflects on Summer at theSouthern Cultural Heritage Foundation

I arrived in Vicksburg to start my sum-mer internship at the Southern CulturalHeritage Foundation in June with a cer-tain set of expectations and left withmuch more than I dreamed possible. Ibargained for a summer filled with pro-ject deadlines and other assignments,hoping to gain practical experience in anonprofit cultural organization and

complete a graduation requirement. As Ireflect on my summer though, I realizejust how much my stay in Vicksburgexceeded my expectations.

Eudora Welty once said, "Southern-ers love a good tale. They are bornreciters, great memory retainers, diarykeepers, letter exchangers, letter savers,history tracers and debaters, and- out-

staying all the rest-great talkers." Myevenings and weekends this summerwere spent with Southerners like these.Charlie Gholson graciously offered herhome to me during my stay. Evenings wespent together, sipping bourbon on theporch or at the kitchen table, talking

Elizabeth B. Brevard Women's Council ScholarshipCreated to Benefit Southern Studies Students

The Brevard family of Tupelo, Mississippi, recently made a$100,000 gift to the Ole Miss Women's Council for Philan-thropy, establishing a scholarship to benefit the Center. Thescholarship was made in honor of family matriarch ElizabethBrevard. At this time, 21 named scholarships have been estab-lished by the Women's Council to benefit the University. TheBrevard gift marks the first occasion of Women's Council sup-port for the Center.

Beth Brevard has long been a friend to the Center, alongwith husband Henry, son David, and daughter Elise. The fami-ly's association with Ole Miss dates back over 50 years, toWorld War II when Henry was an undergraduate. Henry Bre-vard (Class of 1943) has served on the Center's advisory andexecutive committees for the majority of the past quarter cen-tury, and he and his family have supported a wide range ofCenter projects over the years.

Beth Brevard is a native of Shannon, Mississippi, and a grad-uate of the Mississippi University for Women. She met herhusband while he was a sophomore at Ole Miss, and they mar-ried in 1946. Their son, David (Class of 1978), is past presidentof the University's Alumni Association.

Beth Brevard's commitment to helping the community hastaken many directions. In addition to raising their children,she taught Sunday school at her church for nearly threedecades. In recent years, she has done volunteer work in a hos-pital emergency ward. For the University, she and her husbandhave spent countless hours supporting University Foundationefforts, the Engineering School, and the Center.

"The Brevards are truly generous in many ways," CenterDirector Charles Reagan Wilson stated. "We're grateful thatthey've been interested in the Center, recognized the needs ofour students, and supported the research we do. Their enthusi-asm for the Center's work has made a significant impact onactivities over the years."

The Elizabeth B. Brevard Women's Council Scholarshipwill provide funds to graduate students pursuing SouthernStudies degrees. They and other Brevard Scholars will jointhe Women's Council's leadership training and mentoringprogram.

The Ole Miss Women's Council for Philanthropy offersdonors interested in assisting with scholarship needs at theUniversity the chance to dedicate funds in honor of womenimportant to them. In addition, Women's Council scholarshipsinsure that student recipients receive leadership and philan-thropy training while they are students at Ole Miss.

There are many ways to contribute to the Women's Councilefforts to fund scholarships for University students. In additionto the single donor approach (such as with the Brevard family),groups of people can join together to honor a former teacher,friend, or family member. One possibility is to have 20 individ-

Emmett Till's lynching, the execu-tion of Ethel and Julius Rosenbergon charges of espionage, and AdlaiStevenson's campaign for the presi-dency are unexpected contexts for adiscussion of Mississippi's most cele-brated woman writer, but HarrietPollack and Suzanne Marrs, the edi-tors of Eudora Welty and Politics, joineight other essayists in evoking justsuch events to emphasize the variedforms of political engagement inWelty's life and works. The subtitleof this important collection echoesWelty's frequently cited 1965 essay,"Must the Novelist Crusade?," pub-lished in Harper's at the height of thecivil rights movement.

There Welty suggested that the"noble hand of the crusader" shouldfind its expression in editorials,while the novelist's convictions mustremain "implicit" because "The nov-elist works neither to correct nor tocondone, not at all to comfort, but tomake what's told alive." Many schol-ars have cited this passage and simi-lar ones to emphasize Welty'snegative attitude toward propagandaposing as fiction. In the past fewyears, however, New Yorker essayistClaudia Roth Pierpont and biogra-pher Ann Waldron have gone fur-ther, renewing Diana Trilling's earlycomplaint, in a 1943 review of DeltaWedding, that Welty has little con-cern with pressing social issues, par-ticularly racial inj ustice. threat during World War II was "toopersonal" a horror for her to writeabout (her brothers and friends werein the military), "I could write ortranslate things into domestic orother dimensions in my writing, withthe same things in mind" (33). Pren-shaw studies several of these transla-tions, particularly in Losing Battles(1970). As the novel evolvedthrough the 15 years of its composi-tion, "Welty came to see in the ruralstory a possibility of-and humanhabitation for-active debate anddiscussion of topics that were in thelast analysis not merely private needsbut also political issues" (38), includ-ing gender politics.

Noel Polk's fiery contribution toEudora Welty and Politics, "Engagingthe Political: In Our Texts, in OurClassrooms," describes "Circe" inThe Bride of the Innisfallen as a "head-on" confrontation of "the limitationsof female empowerment" (61), andhe finds evidence throughout Welty'scorpus that "she understands verywell how political structures workprejudicially against women" (58).Nevertheless, Polk regrets thatWelty's challenge to oppression istypically subtle. He concludes that"In all kinds of practical ways, Eudo-ra Welty was right about the rela-tionship between art and politics, nomatter how much we-I-want ourheroes to hold admirable and heroicpositions, and no matter how defen-sive Welty seems to be about herposition in the sixties" (62). Thedefensiveness that troubles Polk hasmuch to do with Mississippi's volatilerace relationships during that period.

A great strength of this volume isthe dialogue that emerges in the

some of the essays in the Pollack-Marrs volume were originally pre-sented at a 1997 conference of theEudora Welty Society, Pollack citesPierpont's harsh assessment in 1998as an inspiration for this book-length"clarification on the controversialsubject of Welty and the political"(18).

In "Welty's Transformations of thePublic, the Private, and the Politi-cal," Peggy Whitman Prenshawtraces the author's distrust of politicsto her memories of the racist dema-gogues who controlled Mississippiwhen she was growing up in the cap-ital city of Jackson. According toPrenshaw, "the possibility of politicaldiscourse" is rare in Welty's early sto-ries (26). On the other hand, shedescribes many instances of Welty'spolitical/social engagement, includ-ing her love of President John F.Kennedy, her belief that artists musthave a "moral consciousness," andher feeling that, although the Nazi

spaces between essays. Thus, whilePolk's Welty was reticent duringthe 1960s, Suzanne Marrs's Weltyspoke out. In '''The Huge FatefulStage of the Outside World': EudoraWelty's Life in Politics," Marrs makesimpressive use of archival collectionsto demonstrate Welty's consistentsupport of liberal causes, mostnotably Stevenson's 1952 presiden-tial campaign and the civil rightsstruggles of the early 1960s. Not onlywas she courageous in publishing the1963 story "Where Is the VoiceComing From" in response toMedgar Evers's assassination in Jack-son, but that same year she boldlyread "Powerhouse," her sympatheticportrayal of a jazz musician, to anintegrated Jackson audience, sug-gesting-as Marrs points out-that"a shared act of imagination canbridge, if only momentarily, the sep-arateness between individuals" (78).Marrs emphasizes the important factthat Welty requested that the read-ing be open to all, firmly opposing asuggestion that African Americansbe excluded.

The next three essays in the collec-tion continue the discussion ofWelty's racial concerns by viewingspecific works from various theoreti-cal, biographical, and historical per-spectives. Focusing on "modernistpolitics" and "textuality," Suzan Har-rison analyzes "The Demonstrators"as "an elusive, ambivalent, and con-tradictory exploration of the con-struction of racial identities in thecontext of the American civil rightsmovement" (92). The "politics offil-ial piety," crucial in Welty's own life,informs Ann Romines's readings ofboth "Where Is the Voice ComingFrom" and "The Demonstrators,"each with "a pious white son at itscenter" (115). Romines speculatesthat "the absence of any publishedfiction" after the 1972 novel TheOptimist's Daughter "may be an implic-itly political decision in which issuesof filial piety are intimately involved"

(122). Most controversial of theessays on Welty and race is RebeccaMark's treatment of Losing Battles inconjunction with Emmett Till's 1955murder and the Ku Klux Klan. ForMark, the Banner school busiriWelty's novel bears the symbolism of"education, desegregation, communi-ty understanding, and change" (139),an ingenious reading but one thatmight place an undeserved burden onthat ramshackle vehicle.

Also liable to serious debate isSharon Deykin Baris's examinationof the 1953 novel The Ponder Heartas Welty's response to "the McCarthyhearings, the Rosenberg trials, andother tests of American loyalty thatthen prevailed" (180). A more plau-sible rendering of the era's impactappears in Barbara Ladd's valuablestudy of several of Welty's essays andbook reviews in "'Writing againstDeath': Totalitarianism and theNonfiction of Eudora Welty at Mid-century." Daniele Pitavy-Souquestoo considers larger settings than theSouth, poetically limning Welty's"self-portrait" in One Writer's Begin-nings as a "recasting of the Americanmyths of the frontier" (215).

Eudora Welty and Politics draws toan unforgettable conclusion with"Seeing Welty's Political Vision inHer Photographs" by volume editorsPollack and Marrs. Their one- tothree-paragraph commentariesaccompany a series of 1930s printsfrom the Welty Collection at theMississippi Department of Archivesand History:12 Mississippi scenesand two of New York's UnionSquare. Alert to details of framingand focus, Pollack and Marrs skillful-ly lead the viewer to the black andwhite proof tha't Welty's "politicalvision" in her photos both "pene-trates her times and anticipates issuesto come" (223). The scholarshipgathered in this essay collection illu-minates many of these social-politi-cal issues, sometimes brilliantly; butthe photographs themselves, like

tory to cover groups and experiencesthat deserve more attention thanmany scholars have shown. One stud-ies a group largely neglected in theantebellum South, the second studiesthe dynamic interactions of churchesin an urban setting, and the third stud-ies the rise of Pentecostalism, bothwithin and outside the South.

John Allen Macaulay is correctthat too few scholars of the 19th- and20th-century South have concentrat-ed on religious life outside the evan-gelical groups. His goal inUnitarianism in the Antebellum South:The Other Invisible Institution is todetail the ideas, leaders, challenges,and, most intriguingly, the influenceof a religious movement that main-tained some popularity among well-educated urban professionals whowere more influenced by enlighten-ment ideas than the need for life-changing individual conversionexperiences. As the author summa-rizes, "Unitarians witnessed the sim-ple spiritual truth that reason andbelief are one unified whole" (4).

The argument that Unitarianismconstituted a second "invisible insti-tution" is intriguing but perhaps notconvincing. Macaulay argues thatUnitarianism was comparable toslaves' religion-widely known as theinvisible institution-in that there

were few organized congregationswith church buildings but that manypeople either had Unitarian beliefs orfelt their effects. His best argument todocument those effects lies in descrip-tions of Unitarians' influence in pub-lishing and higher education, and heshows that their networks of friendsranged well beyond people who calledthemselves Unitarians.

Alert to differences in theology andsensitive to individual personalities,the author gives a thorough accountof individuals like Theodore Clappand Samuel and Caroline Gilman,who struggled to keep alive interest inUnitarianism while the evangelicalchurches assumed ever greater powerin Southern society. Southern Uni-tarians came into increasing conflictwith Northern Unitarians on theissue of slavery. Southern Unitarians,believing in hierarchy and enlight-ened social responsibility, believedtheir Northern colleagues who hadbecome abolitionists had becomemonomaniacal fanatics, while theysaw themselves as kindly thinkerswith faith in human progress. Somemay worry that Macaulay seems totake Southern Unitarians' side onmost issues, but the author does aneffective job describing the lives ofpeople often left out of Southern reli-gious history.

The dis-tinctive features of Shepherd's bookare its concentration on urban life.

Compared to many scholarly works,the book is not driven by a centralargument. Instead, Avenues of Faithgives a sense of the range of interestsof church leaders and members, theirincreasing activity in adding to thesize of their church buildings andcongregations, and their energeticefforts to change their society. If acentral theme holds the book togeth-er, it would seem to be interaction ofchurches with each other, and of var-ious churches with various aspects ofRichmond social life.

The great strength of this booklies in its detail. Proper nouns fill thepages, as particular individuals andcongregations act in a range of ways.We do not see them as "Baptists" or"Episcopalians" or "blacks" or"whites," but as people with numer-

ous identities, engaged in city build-ing, trying to save souls and buildSunday Schools, addressing urbanpoverty, saloons, and prostitution,organizing educational and serviceinstitutions, raising money, just busyas heck.

Within the range of scholarshipon Southern religious history, a fewarguments stand out. Scholars havelong debated the degree to whichwhite Southern churches addressedsocial problems other than uncon-verted souls. Shepherd shows that"From pulpits, at civic gatherings,and in publications, Richmond's reli-gious leaders repeatedly issued callsfor social justice" (168). On issues ofrace, the white leaders of Richmond'schurches did relatively little otherthan to rally for antipoverty mea-sures and often to oppose the KuKlux Klan. Finally, the book arguesthat "Fundamentalism failed inRichmond" (278) because the city'speople were so accustomed and opento religious diversity that new ideasdid not offend or threaten them.

Grant Wacker's Heaven Below:Early Pentecostals and American Cul-ture is an extraordinary work. Thebook is exciting to read, in partbecause of its author's modesty.Wacker does not attempt to explainthe rise of Pentecostalism as much ashe tries to show what it was like tobe Pentecostal. He has an excellentunderstanding of theology, and heshows how people understood it,expressed it, and tried to live it.Wacker is consistently respectful,but willing to ask difficult questionsof his subjects-challenging thePentecostals' explanations of issuessuch as missionary tongues (sponta-neous speaking of local languages)and complicating widespread beliefsthat early Pentecostals were espe-cially egalitarianism in their racialand gender practices.

Two arguments dominate thebook. The first is that Pentecostalssought and often found in their reli-

gion a depth and beauty they saw as"heaven below." Along with morebroadly evangelical beliefs in thecentrality of the conversion experi-ence and the impending return toearth of Jesus, Pentecostals were dis-tinctive in their concentrations ontwo things: Holy Ghost baptism(and the forms of worship, such astongue-speaking, that were part ofthat experience) and divine healing.Wacker's second argument concernsthe "productive tension" betweenknowing and directly experiencingthe power of God and putting intoplace pragmatic programs to expandchurches and other institutions thatunderstood that power., As theauthor summarizes, "Pentecostals'distinctive understanding of thehuman encounter with the divine,which included both primitivist andpragmatic dimensions, enabled themto capture lightning in a bottle and,more importan't, to keep it there,decade after decade, without stillingthe fire or cracking the vessel" (10).

One can understand the scope andintent of the book simply by notingits chapter titles: Temperament,Tongues, Testimony, Authority, Cos-mos, Worship, Rhetoric, Customs,

Leaders, Women, Boundaries, Soci-ety, Nation, War, and Destiny. Pri-mary sources, especially fromnumerous Pentecostal periodicalsand from diaries, sermons, and lifestories of preachers, missionaries,and lay leaders, give a day-to-dayfeeling of a movement excited, attimes almost gleeful, about enjoying"heaven below" and spreading it asfar and as fast as possible. HeavenBelow does not concentrate exclu-sively on the South. Part of Wacker'spoint is that Pentecostalism devel-oped throughout the United States,and not just among the poor andmarginalized, in the South or else-where. However, many of its sourcesand best stories concern the Southand Southern people, such as C. H.Mason of the Church of God inChrist, A. J. Tomlinson of theChurch of God, and J. H. King andGeorge Floyd Taylor of the Pente-costal Holiness Church. Wackerargues that American Pentecostal-ism developed in America's "heart-land," a term not often applied tothe South. While Wacker mighthave done more to address questionsof regional differences, this book isnonetheless a major contribution tounderstanding one of the most vitalreligious movements of the last hun-dred years.

is the work of a mature scholar and amajor achievement. Doyle's book is asophisticated study, the product of ahistorian skilled in solid researchand well aware of major historio-graphical themes. It is also one of themost truly accomplished interdisci-plinary studies available.

Faulkner's County takes its specialcharacter from bringing together asolid piece of the social history of alocal Southern community with therelated work of William Faulkner.Scholars in literature have longknown of the real Lafayette Countyhistorical background to Faulkner'smythical legend of YoknapatawphaCounty, but no one has documentedthe connection with the care, depth,and rigor that Doyle brings to hiswork. His handling of Faulkner issuperb. He concludes that Faulknerwas "a perceptive social historian,"and he clearly understands Faulkn-er's use of history. Faulkner's portray-al of the Civil War, for example,escaped the historiographical con-ventions of his era, which are nowoutdated, while Faulkner's interpre-tation of the war resonates well withaccounts by contemporary social his-torians of the era. On the otherhand, Faulkner's picture of Recon-struction still reflected the influenceof the Dunning School of history,now long outdated.

One of the fascinating aspects ofthe manuscript is Doyle's unveilingof where Faulkner gained his histori-cal knowledge and the limitations ofit. Often that knowledge came fromlocal legend and storytelling, as inthe influence of Caroline Barr (hisfamily's servant) on his understand-ing of slavery. Doyle begins eachchapter with a relevant Faulkner epi-gram and often frames his chaptersor discussions of major issues withanalysis of how Faulkner dealt withhistorical topics. Doyle engages in adialogue with Faulkner, enrichingour understanding of Faulkner's greatliterary themes and also giving local

historical context to Faulkner's workin a way no historian has ever done.Literary critics will find much toponder in this study. His explicationof the real life counterparts toFaulkner's Snopes family represents amajor achievement that shouldnuance future interpretations of thatclan, which is often seen as down-right sinister.

Doyle's book is highly useful ininterpreting Faulkner, but it is pri-marily a social history operating at avery high level. Doyle's earlier workfocused on communities, and herehe tells the story of the founding anddevelopment of a Southern commu-nity that began on the Southwesternslave frontier, experienced the fulleffects of the Civil War and Recon-struction, reestablished itself in apostwar world that combined ruralagriculture and town business life,and developed (with considerablestrains) into a modern society in the20th century. He is able to comparethe distinctiveness of early LafayetteCounty with the 'frontier communi-ties of the Old Northwest, which hehad earlier studied.

Doyle's interpretations show hisawareness of current historiographi-cal trends, and he does not shy awayfrom making his stands. He viewsthe Old South not as a premodern,

precapitalist society but as a societyon the make. He stresses the ambi-tious, striving qualities of its peopleand the instability of life. The "so-called Old South was no tradition-bound society of landed gentry, butyoung, opportunistic, and forevermoving." He gives major attentionto the Civil War era, unlike somesocial history that overlooks thewar's influence in stressing insteadnonpolitical events and broad socialcontinuity over time. Doyle showsthat the stresses of war revealedmuch about this new society. His dis-covery of a slave rebellion in January1863 in Lafayette County is a star-tling new finding that emerged fromhis thorough survey of primarysources for this era. Doyle also spendsmuch time on the early 20th century,detailing the plight of commonwhites and blacks and the underly-ing social class and race issues thatreflected the social underpinning ofthe broader Southern way of life inthat era. Doyle's discussion of poorwhites is especially sensitive andoriginal.

Doyle has an easy command ofpublished and archival sources, manyfrom local places in the county butothers from state, regional, andnational repositories. He makesexcellent use of interviews, his ownand others, in giving flavor and orig-inality to his study. The book isenriched by Doyle's sketches of indi-viduals in the community, and heuses the stories of African Americansas well as whites in telling the coun-ty's history.

Doyle begins his book by creditingAssociate Director Ann Abadie,who suggested the idea for the studyand encouraged his work onLafayette County. He acknowledgesCenter and University faculty fortheir moral and intellectual supportof what has become a first-rate book.

Fate, lately, has been very kind toTom Franklin. The new John and ReneeGrisham Southern Writer in Residenceat the University doesn't taste the badkarma that twists the lives of the arcane,gritty, and, at times, wicked charactershe writes about in his stories. No,Franklin's good fortune has been justthat: first, he is chosen for a year-longteaching appointment at the Univeristy,where his favorite writer, Barry Hannah,lives and serves as writer in residence.

"I love being in the same room withBarry Hannah," said Franklin, a Dickin-son, Alabama, native and author ofPoachers: Stories (William Morrow andCompany, 1999) and Hell at the Breech, aforthcoming novel. "He's been a hero ofmine since 1983, when I first startedreading him," Franklin said.

In March, Franklin sat on a writingpanel Hannah moderated at the OxfordConference for the Book. Then, duringthe book conference, he learned that hehad won a 2001 Guggenheim Fellow-ship. He was one of 183 recipients cho-sen from 2,728 applicants throughoutthe United States and Canada. Theaverage grant award this year's winnersis $36,000.

"I was stunned," said Franklin. "Ithought it was something I had to apply

for 10 times and still wouldn't get." ButFranklin's Guggenheim Fellowship is nofluke to Joseph Urgo, chair of the Univer-sity's English Department. "Franklin is aprose master with a sharp ear for Southernspeech and a keen eye for the way South-erners see the world. We are delightedwith the presence of this fine new talentin Southern writing on campus."

Franklin is teaching a 500-level fic-tion writing workshop, which is open tograduate students and advanced under-graduates. And when he's not teaching,he is working on Hell at the Breech, a his-torical novel based on-a brutal series ofevents that took place 12 miles from hisAlabama home. "People have writtenabout it in scholarly publications, but noone has ever written a novel about it,"Franklin says.

Poachers, a collection of nine stories, anovella, and an essay, is set in the wood-lands, swamps, and chemical plantsalong the Alabama River. The book hasbeen published in England and is beingtranslated into French, German, andJapanese.

Franklin said he discovered the craftof writing in high school. After movingto Mobile at 18, Franklin earned bothhis bachelor's and master's degrees inEnglish and creative writing form the

University of South Alabama. In 1997,he received a master of fine arts from theUniversity of Arkansas. His fiction hasappeared in numerous publications,including the Nebraska Review andAlabama Magazine.

Either by divine or natural provi-dence, fate continues to smile onFranklin: he and his wife, poet BethAnn Fennelly, are recently parents oftheir first child, a daughter, Claire. "Weadore Oxford," Franklin said. "We'rehappy our little girl will spend her firstyear here."

Oral History Session to PrecedeSouthern Foodways Symposium

The Southern Foodways Alliance cel-ebrates, teaches, preserves, and promotesthe diverse food cultures of the Ameri-can South. Fundamental to achievingthese goals is the collection and dissemi-nation of oral histories that tell the lifestories and explicate the life works of thestandard bearers of the culinary arts.

To date, SFA, in concert with Copia:The American Center for Wine, Food,and the Arts, has videotaped more than20 interviews, capturing for posteritythe words and deeds of veteran Alaba-ma pitmaster Van Sykes and Louisianafile maker Lionel Key, among others.

On Thursday afternoon, October 25,we take our next step when JenniferAbraham of the T. Harry Williams Cen-ter for Oral History at Louisiana StateUniversity conducts a workshop onusing oral history to document local his-tory and culture, in particular foodways.Abraham will show a film that detailsthe steps of interviewing and process-ing. She will distribute copies of work-shop packets that include consentforms, tape index samples, recordingequipment lists, restrictions forms, abibliography, sample interview ques-tions, and a list of Web sites forresearchers and educators. The 20-per-son session is free to attendees at the2001 Southern Foodways Symposium.

Foodways Folklife Films PremiereIn August, two Southern towns held premieres of foodways folklife documentary

films that highlight little-known Southern stews, both of which are cooked in black,cast-iron wash pots using hand-hewn wooden paddles and ancestral recipes.

Greenwood, South Carolina, celebrated the film Carolina Hash: A Taste of SouthCarolina. (Hash is a little-known and much-loved stew, often cooked for as long as 12hours. It is as a product of the rural farm, dating back to antebellum times.) Dundas,Virginia, celebrated the film Sheep Stew: A Gastronomical Delight. (Sheep stew iscooked in gigantic iron pots using culled sheep, those sheep no longer useful to theherd.) In years past, both stews were cooked for social gatherings and communityevents like hog killings or tobacco harvestings.

Carolina Hash: A Taste of South Carolina is a lively documentary. The viewerbounces around South Carolina, ashash folks tell the story of one of thestate's most unusual indigenous food-ways. We learn that Brunswick stewnever found a home in the black ironpots of South Carolina, and that justover the border in North Carolinasome people don't even know whathash is. We learn that recently enact-ed laws discourage black iron potcooking and that such laws are takingtheir toll. Although, as is now well known, William Faulkner's ownexperience in war was for the most part pure fabrication, oneof the results of "Faulkner and War"-the 28th Faulkner andYoknapatawpha Conference-was the demonstration of justhow large a role war plays in his fiction. Some novels, such asThe Unvanquished and A Fable, were predictable topics forlectures, but others, such as Absalom, Absalom!, were less so,and the idea of As I Lay Dying as a war novel-somehow ren-dering a sense of the reality of World War I with almost noexplicit reference to it-was a genuine surprise.

Among the lectures were discussions of Faulkner's depic-tion of the lives of women and children in the South duringthe Civil War, by Don Doyle and Paula Mesquita; readings ofA Fable, by Lothar Hbnnighausen and Noel Polk, the first ofwhich recognized a kind of "eschatological optimism" thatemerges from the violence and betrayals of war, while thesecond emphasized what it regards as the novel's essentiallynihilistic view; and a reading by John Lowe of Faulkner'streatment of war in terms of fraternal rivalry in his family aswell as Southern constructions of standards of masculinity.

In addition to the formal lectures, the Rivendell TheatreEnsemble of Chicago presented a play, Faulkner's Bicycle, andthe Rising Star Fife and Drum Band, led by 94-year-old OtharTurner, performed during the Sunday opening program. Forthe third year, teachers from five Southern states, the recipi-ents of fellowships funded by a grant from Saks IncorporatedFoundation, on behalf of McRae's, Profitt's, and ParisianDepartment Stores, attended the conference. Also attendingwere an Elderhostel group led by Carolyn Vance Smith andJoan Popernik.

Allan Kolsky read his winning entry in the 12th annualFaux Faulkner Contest, "The (Auto) Pound and the Jury, or,Quentin Gets his First Parking Ticket," and Colby Kullmanmoderated the second "Faulkner on the Fringe" open-mikesession at Milly Moorhead's Southside Gallery. Other eventsincluded presentations by members of Faulkner's family andfriends, guided tours of North Mississippi, and the special"Teaching Faulkner" sessions conducted by James B.Carothers, Robert W. Hamblin, Arlie E. Herron, and CharlesA. Peek.

On Monday of conference week, we learned of the death, atthe age of 92, of Eudora Welty. Wednesday morning, confer-ence registrants and members of the University and Oxfordcommunities gathered at the Education Auditorium for animpromptu series of readings and comments on the life andwork of Miss Welty. Although indeed a sad and unexpectedevent, it seemed appropriate that the annual celebration ofone great Mississippi writer became the occasion wacknowl-edge the magnificent career of another, one who, born in 1909,was the last of Faulkner's great literary contemporaries.

200 1 Eudora Welty Writing AwardsTwo recent graduates from Mississippi

high schools took top honors in the14th annual Eudora Welty Awards forCreative Writing presented duringopening-day ceremonies of the 28thannual Faulkner and YoknapatawphaConference.

Angela D. Fortner won first prize,$500, for her short story "King Cole,King Cole Was a Merry 01' Soul." Fort-ner is a student at Callaway High Schoolin Jackson. Sarah Wheat, of CentralHinds Academy in Raymond, won thisyear's second-place award and $250 forher poem "Rote Learning." The win-ning story and poem were selected fromhigh school entries across the state.

Fortner's piece chronicles a child'sefforts to endure his mother's alcoholism

and physical abuse. The mother lives inan imaginary world of kings and queens,oblivious to her filthy, grotesque livingconditions, where roaches reign. She isportrayed as being gripped by insanity andmistreating her son and caring only forthe alcoholic drink that imprisons her.

Judges from the University's EnglishDepartment praised Fortner's work as astirring piece filled with humor that"barely masks the poignancy of thisstory." Joseph Urgo, chair of the depart-ment and the selection committee, said,"Fortner's control over the language isimpressive from the first sentence, andher attention to stylistic matters sets herstory apart from the other entries."

Fortner is attending Jackson StateUniversity this fall and has ambitions of

becoming an English professor. "At onepoint, I had considered not going intoEnglish," she admitted, "but winningthis contest has greatly boosted my con-fidence in my writing ability and encour-aged me to pursue it further."

The 14-year-old annual contest issponsored by the Center and is namedfor Mississippi's First Lady of Letters,who passed away on July 23. FrancesPatterson of Tupelo, a longtime Englishand creative writing teacher and a mem-ber of the Center's Advisory Commit-tee, established and endowed the awardsin 1987 to recognize and encourage thewriting talents and efforts of Mississippihigh school students.

Southside Gallery Hosts Second Annual Faulkner Fringe FestivalThis year's Faulkner and Yoknapataw-

pha Conference gave its blessing to thesecond annual Faulkner Fringe Festival,which took place at Southside Galleryon the Square on Monday, July 23, at10:00 p.m. Hosted by Milly Moorheadand Colby Kullman, this program ismodeled after the Edinburgh Fringe Fes-tival, an event that every year hosts over1,000 dramatic productions shown allover the city, in bakeries and bistros,bookstores and art galleries, churchbasements and theatre auditoriums.Both festivals are dedicated to givingeveryone a voice-even if for only 15minutes.

Marianne Steinsvik, who comes tothe conference every July from Swedenby way of Spain, is the Founding Moth-er of the Faulkner Fringe Festival. Shedesigned the evening for Faulkner fans(who mayor may not be scholars) inhopes that in the future more and morefans will come forward to talk abouttheir experiences in reading Faulkner.She believes that to place Faulkner oncampus only is a bad idea because he isread primarily by ordinary people. Sheexplains, "Reading Faulkner teaches usto see and understand better as we feelour way through his cannon."

Marianne Steinsvik began theevening with "a story of the humanheart and its dilemma, part of Faulkner'scosmos," a story that enables us to seeand understand better. She then toldher story about Henry, whom she met ather Roman Outpost in Spain.

Next, William "Billy" Houston told ofhis personal encounters with WilliamFaulkner. At a time when his uncle was

serving as Faulkner's chauffeur, Billywould tote bottles of liquor from hisuncle's car over to Faulkner. The imageBilly drew of this was especially pic-turesque as he was still a child in diapersand barely able to walk when he became"Faulkner's bootlegger." From that timeon, Faulkner never failed to recognizehim in public and say, "Hello, BillyHouston!" His peers were continuallyamazed by Billy's friendship with thegreat writer. Houston then read two ofhis songs written with Faulkner in mind.

Rebecca Jernigan followed with a dra-matic reading of a short essay by WendellBerry, who stressed the importance ofreading Mr. Faulkner aloud. Carter Hilly-er brought the evening to a dynamic con-clusion by singing an amusing song of hisown composition about Faulkner'sunknown sister-a blow-up doll reportedto have been found hiding in the back ofone of the closets of Rowan Oak.

Standing with Marianne Steinsvik atSouthside Gallery in Oxford, Mississippi,at a far distance from her Roman Outpostin Spain, we together passed on Faulkner'sThyrrenean vase from hand to hand asweremembered his words: "Listen, stranger.This was myself. This was 1."

The time of Faulkner's life and career was one of the most momentous inWestern history, especially with regard to intellectual ferment and theresponse to it in arts and letters. The aim of the 2002 conference is to addressthe literary and intellectual relations Faulkner shares with other writers andartists as well as the extent to which his work is a reflection of, and acommentary on, the major intellectual movements of the day. Although hespent the large bulk of his life in the small North Mississippi town ofOxford-physically isolated from the various schools and coteries of modernart and thought-we have come to realize the extent to which Faulknerpossessed either a direct or an intuitive knowledge of the leading ideas of histime and a significant reading acquaintance with many of the writersespousing those ideas.

Here are some of the issues that might be addressed: Who are those writerswith whom Faulkner can be most usefully compared, in terms either ofsimilarity or opposition? What are the artistic and intellectual movementsthat most pervade Faulkner's work? Are there any movements or "schools"with which Faulkner is not normally linked-such as the Lost Generation, theHarlem Renaissance, Proletarian Literature-that might reveal unexpectedinsights into Faulkner, or that might themselves be altered by being viewedthrough a Faulknerian lens? To what extent is Faulkner truly a writer of hisage-reflecting and responding to the written world around him-and towhat extent is he the iconoclast, going his unique way?

We are inviting 50-minute plenary addresses and IS-minute papers for thisconference. Plenary papers consist of approximately 6,000 words and will bepublished by the University Press of Mississippi. Short papers consist ofapproximately 2,500 words and will be delivered at panel sessions.

For plenary papers the 14th edition of the University of Chicago Manual ofStyle should be used as a guide in preparing manuscripts. Three copies ofmanuscripts must be submitted by January 15, 2002. Notification of selectionwill be made by March 1, 2002. Authors whose papers are selected forpresentation at the conference and for publication will receive (1) a waiver ofthe conference registration fee, (2) lodging at the University Alumni Housefrom Saturday, July 20, through Friday, July 26, and (3) reimbursement oftravel expenses, up to $500 ($.345 a mile by automobile or tourist classairfare).

For short papers, three copies of two-page abstracts must be submitted byJanuary 15, 2002. Notification will be made by March 1, 2002. Authorswhose papers are selected for panel presentation will recei:ve a waiver of the$200 conference registration fee. In addition to commercial lodging,inexpensive dormitory rooms are available.

In six weeks I learned a great deal about culturalresource management and the workings of a nonprofitorganization. I am grateful to the SCHF's staff, boardmembers, and volunteers for their support and kindnessthis summer. Before moving to Oxford in the summer of 2000, she was director ofthe Mary Elizabeth Sharpe Street Tree Endowment in Providence,Rhode Island. She has also served as a state coordinator for the Conser-vation Law Foundation and development assistant for the Children'sMuseum of Rhode Island.

SALLY WALBURN is a second year Southern Studies graduate studentfrom Tuscaloosa, Alabama. She received her B.A. in English from theUniversity of Mississippi in 1996 and is currently writing her M.A. thesison the popular syndicated television series Hee Haw.

RANA WALLACE is a second-year graduate student in Southern Studiesat the University of Mississippi. She received her B.A. in English fromFlorida State University in 1999. She was an intern at the SouthernCultural Heritage Foundation in Vicksburg, Mississippi, during the sum-'mer of 2001.

DAVID WHARTON is assistant professor and directory of documentaryprojects at the Center, where he teaches courses in Southern Studies,fieldwork, and photography. He is the author of The Soul of a Small TexasTown: Photographs, Memories, and History from McDade.

CHARLES REAGAN WILSON is director of the Center and professor ofHistory and Southern Studies. Among his publications are Baptized inBlood: the Religion of the Lost Cause and Judgment and Grace in Dixie:Southern Faiths from Faulkner to Elvis.
