like wise see Christ in us outside of Mass, as Paul tells us in the Letter to The Ephesians by being…kind to one another, compassionate, forgiving one another as God has forgiven you. We must be imi-tators of God, as beloved children, and live in love. When people see us acting as Christ teaches us, they will truly see Christ active and alive in us, and thus they will be able to see God. When we receive Jesus in His Body and Blood then He lives in us and we are given the strength to do just as St. Paul tells us above. This Tuesday August 15th, is the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Body

and Soul into Heaven. It is a holy day of obligation-see the bulletin for the schedule of Masses. Tomorrow (Monday) we will pray the Rosary on the Rectory Lawn starting at 7 PM which will be followed by the 7:30 PM Vigil Mass in the Church-with fellowship in the Church Lobby due to darkness. Please join us all of the Mondays of August for the Ro-sary starting at 7 PM-bring a chair, blanket, and a dessert for fellowship with your parish family. Perhaps you have noticed on the front page of the bulletin the name of Sister Anne Marie Dean. CSJ. Sister Anne Marie has agreed to become our new Director of Reli-gious Education. She comes to St. Joseph’s with many years of parish experience and years of working in the Faith Formation Office for the Diocese. We are very blessed to have Sr. Anne Marie joining our staff and we

look forward to many happy years of working with her as she helps our young people to prepare for the sacraments and learn more and more about their faith. While we all truly miss our dear Jane Favale when she went home to the Lord this past January, we know that she is very happy with Sr. Anne Marie coming to St. Joseph’s. Jane is still praying for us and is in Heaven still helping our young people come closer to God. Please keep Jane and her family in your prayers and Sr. Anne Marie as well as she joins us.

God bless you always Fr. Mike

Usually when people talk to God it is called praying, but if a person says God talked back, others would say that the person was crazy! Now comes a ques-tion (and its answer) that will really make people think you (we) are crazy. Have you ever seen God? The answer to that question is yes! We as Christians believe that the whole world has seen God in the per-son of Jesus. In fact, we see this in the very words from today’s Gospel-“No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him, and I will raise him on the last day. It is written in the prophet: They shall all be taught by God. Everyone who listens to my Father and learns from him comes to me. Not that anyone has seen the Father except the one who is from God; he has seen the Father.” And we have in turn seen the Son and to see the Son is to see the Father, and so yes, we have seen God. Now people will say to us-how can you have seen Jesus when He lived over 2000 yrs. ago? Well in many ways, we can see Jesus. Jesus is made present in the Word proclaimed at Mass, the Liturgy of The Hours and other prayer services, and when we read the Scriptures at home. We as Roman Catholics and Orthodox Christians also have a very special way of seeing Jesus and that is in The Holy Sacrament of Altar, where Jesus feeds us with real food and drink (more on this in next week’s Gospel). Yes, we can say we have indeed seen God for we have seen Jesus as He is made present (body, blood, humanity, and divinity) in the Blessed Sacrament. Of course, to see Jesus in the Eucharist we must indeed have FAITH. Without faith all we would see is a piece of bread and a cup of wine, and this would make us like the people in today’s Gospel Reading. They re-lied only on what they saw; just the human Jesus (a carpenter from Nazareth) and their lack of faith kept them from seeing anything more. With faith we can look beyond the bread we eat and the cup we drink to see our Savior and our Lord. Happily the gift of faith is given to us freely by God so we can see Christ pre-sent in The Word and in The Breaking of the Bread. We also have another way of seeing Jesus/God in our midst and that is of course in each other! We are all members of The Living Body of Christ, and we are all Temples of The Holy Spirit through Baptism. Christ is always made present through the Assembled Community-as Jesus tells us whenever two or three are gathered in my name there I am. People should

RESPECT LIFE With all the talk about embryonic stem cells vs. adult stem cells, one fact seems never to be mentioned. And that is … that many cures have occurred with the use of adult stem cells, but they are seldom reported on, or publicized.

However, in the May/June 2006 issue of the Saturday Evening Post, Dr. Eduardo Marban, M.S., Ph.D. answers a few questions on the subject of gene and stem cell therapies for heart attack victims. (Dr. Marban serves as editor-in-chief of Circulation Research, the world’s leading journal of cardiovascular investi-gation.) His definition of a stem cell being “like a utility player on a baseball team, capable of filling any of various positions given the right directive” is enlightening and understandable. Adult stem cells, which are derived from tissues within the body, provide endogenous (growing or originating from within) repair capacity for any given organ. The medical community now recognizes that the heart, for instance, contains its own pool of stem cells, which, with further research, may give doc-tors a completely new way of treating conditions such as heart attack and heart failure. According to Dr. Marban, cardiac stem cells have many ad-vantages. One of course is that there is no moral or ethical di-lemma with respect to the destruction of embryos. And autolo-gous (your own) stem cells are a perfect genetic match. If we can harvest the cells from an individual, grow them up in a labo-ratory, and reintroduce them into the same individual, there wouldn’t be any possibility of rejection. Dr. Marban’s group’s goal at this time is to complete preclinical studies within the next six months. As soon as that group of data is available and analyzed, they will seek regulatory approval to begin what they call Phase I clinical studies – safety studies- in a few patients before the end of 2006. If safety can be established, they will do larger studies with hundreds of patients to establish not only if the therapy is safe, but if it works. They are hoping, by this method, to have real clinical therapy and studies directed at clinical therapy within the next twelve months. When asked if he saw any breakthroughs or major advances coming, Dr. Marban’s reply in part was: “I would note that at the American Heart Association meetings in 2005 about 25 % of the studies presented from the world were in the area of stem cells and regenerative therapy. If we look back only four years, only a handful of studies were presented – less than one per-cent—so this area of research is exploding. I think it will lead to greater advances.” The above was excerpted from the Saturday Evening Post issue of May/June 2006, where you can read the entire article entitled Adult Stem Cell Therapy for Ailing Hearts.

Sharing Our Time and Talents

Ministry of Consolation The death of a loved one can be a very difficult time for the immediate family. From the moment we hear about the passing of a loved one, we want to offer that family our support and our care. Traditionally, that care seemed to be reserved to the priest who paid a visit to the funeral home and then performed the Funeral Mass on the following day. However, the care of the Church extends beyond that which can be given by the ordained clergy. all of us as a church want to extend compassion-ate care and prayerful support to people who have just experienced a loss. The Ministry of Consolation consists of members of our parish family who want to extend that compassion to the newly bereaved.

Members of the Ministry of Consolation help by: -- assist the family in the planning of the funeral liturgy (the choosing of appropriate scripture readings or hymns) -- attend the liturgy and offer hospitality ands assistance to all who are present at the funeral Mass.

People experience the presence of Jesus Christ in the world through the ministry of the Church. The first task of the parish community is to reach out to all people in Christian love and service. Christian hospitality draws people together, opens them to participation, and sets the tone for the liturgy. Every Christian is called to ministry and gifted by the Holy Spirit. This calling is rooted in our baptism. God empowers each person with the resources for ministry. The minister of hospitality is equipped for this ministry by the gifts of the Holy Spirit. These gifts make that ministry effective and enable the minister to build up the Body of Christ. In their welcome and Christ-like attitude, ministers of hospitality ensure that the faithful see and experi-ence the love of Christ. The ministry of hospitality is crucial because it is so visible in the Church. Certainly the attitude, conduct and even the ap-pearance of the minister of hospitality directly affects, either positively or negatively, the experience of the faithful at Mass.
